THE GREAT AMERICAN BASH (July 14, 1991)
The York Foundation (Richard Morton and Thomas Rich) and Thomas Zenk defeated Dustin Rhodes, Flyin' Brian and Robert Gibson when Morton pinned R. Gibson with the Rock'n'Roll Buster in 11:37.
Rating: ** 3/4
Dustin Rhodes recruited some help in his fight against the York Foundation. He brought in Flyin' Brian and also, Richard Morton's former partner, Robert Gibson.
The appearance of Gibson caught Morton off guard as Gibson helped his team get an early edge. But eventually, the York Foundation members were able to pull together and score the victory.
Steve Austin pinned Terry Taylor with the Stun Gun in 10:53.
Rating: *** 1/4
Steve Austin continued his roll. The rookie got the best of another veteran, this time Austin scored an impressive win over Terry Taylor.
Johnny B. Badd pinned Shane Douglas with the Tutti Frutti in 7:24.
Rating: **
Shane Douglas has fallen into a downward spiral since Jim Cornette left WCW and it cost him his TV title. Douglas has been reaching out to other WCW managers looking for more guidance.
He approached Teddy Long who's top guy, Butch Reed, also left town after Ron SImmons got the best of him. Douglas thought it would be a perfect fit, but instead, Long revealed that he already found a new wrestler, Johnny B. Badd.
In a match tonight, Badd was a step ahead of Douglas on all counts and scored a surprisingly easy victory.
Larry Zbyszko and Arn Anderson defeated The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) when A. Anderson pinned R. Steiner with the DDT in 12:10.
Rating: *** 3/4
Zbyszko joined Anderson's fight with the Steiners and the new duo worked together extremely well. Also the fact they were willing to take any shortcut possible made them very formidable. They ended up getting the victory after they spent most of the match focusing on Rick Steiner's leg that they reinjured by smacking a chair against it while the referee was distracted.
Diamond Studd pinned Junkyard Dog with the Diamond Death Drop in 5:44.
Rating: 1/4*
The Diamond Studd made a surprise debut at the last Clash of Champions under the management of Diamond Dallas Page. But Junkyard Dog had plenty of advance notice about Studd and still could do little to stop him.
Ron Simmons pinned Oz with the Powerslam in 4:22.
Rating: * 1/4
They keep getting bigger, but Ron Simmons keeps taking them all out. The All-American made short work of the 7-foot green monster.
Paul Orndorff defeated Ricky Steamboat by disqualification in 12:21.
Rating: ***
(Paul Orndorff retained the WCW UNITED STATES TITLE.)
Sting is just about convinced that Paul Orndorff has been the Black Scorpion that has been tormenting him for months.
Orndorff, with Harley Race in his corner, looked ready to complete a successful title defense having Steamboat set up for a piledriver when Sting ran in and caused a DQ.
Sting, though, chased Orndorff all the way to the back.
The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) defeated The Midnight Express (Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton) when M. Hayes pinned
S. Lane with the DDT 17:13.
Rating: *** 1/2
(The Fabulous Freebirds won the WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES.)
We have new world tag team champions. Diamond Dallas Page snuck in while the Freebirds had the ref distracted and smacked Lane with a title belt. Garvin was fighting Eaton on the outside, so Hayes picked up Lane, hit him with a DDT for good measure and got the pin.
Sting calls out the Black Scorpion.
Sting made his way to the ring and demanded the Black Scorpion come face him. After the lights flickered and the arena filled up with Smoke, the Scorpion was standing right outside the ring.
The Scorpion's voice boomed over the PA saying that he wasn't going to fight Sting because there is nothing Sting has that the Scorpion wants.
Sting asserted his belief that the Scorpion was Paul Orndorff, but that was proved wrong when Orndorff came up from behind and attacked Sting.
Sting and Orndorff began to brawl as the Scorpion watched on from the aisleway. But then Barry Windham came out from behind the Scorpion knocking him to the ground. Windham tossed the Scorpion into the ring at Sting's feet.
Sting looked unsure of what was going on, but Windham insisted Sting take care of business with the Scorpion. Windham went and kept Orndorff from getting back into the ring as Sting ripped off the Scorpion's mask to reveal Lex Luger!!
Sting was stunned and Luger used that to attack Sting. Meanwhile Orndorff got the upperhand on Windham and Harley Race eventually came down to join the two and raised both their hands in the air victoriously, leading right into the main event.
Lex Luger pinned Barry Windham with the piledriver in 13:11.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Lex Luger retained the WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE.)
The ringside cleared except for Harley Race who stayed in Luger’s corner. Windham crawled back into the ring to fight for the world title.
Coming into the arena tonight, most fans were sure they would be pulling for Luger in the match, but a combination of Luger’s betrayal of Sting and the heart Windham showed turned the fans in his corner.
Luger threw everything he had at Barry Windham but the big Texan wouldn't stay down. Windham even found a way to escape Luger's torture rack. But eventually, Luger caught Windham with a piledriver and got a pin to retain his title.
Sting rushed back down after the match to try and attack Luger, but Luger got the help he needed from Harley Race’s bodyguard Mr. Hughes and Paul Orndorff to keep the upperhand on Sting. Windham even tried to get back and help fight Sting, but the numbers were too much.
