When you think of the first big wrestling event to change the landscape of the industry, what is it that comes to your mind? For many, one obvious name lingers in the forefront of your minds. Wrestlemania. In 1985, the WWF would make their statement on American culture by introducing Wrestlemania, the idea of what would come to be known as the Pay-Per View. The Big Event. The Grand Daddy of Them All. But one could argue...that perhaps Wrestlemania may not have come to be, if it were not already for Starrcade...
Before there was Wrestlemania, there was Starrcade. 1983. A year that some tout to be the greatest year in wrestling history. Before everything got swallowed up, every company was making money, and the ruling body, the National Wrestling Alliance...had been THE name recognized with wrestling since the fifties. If you watched wrestling between the 1950s to the late 1970s and early 80's. Chances are, you were watching an NWA product...and the most recognized company within that Alliance, the most respected, the most talked about, the most notoriouswas The Mid-Atlantic. Ran by The Crockett family, The Mid-Atlantic is the company that nearly brought The NWA under one banner. Many fans and workers of the time would tell you. Mid Atlantic, or Jim Crockett Promotions, were the better product. They were more realistic, they were more athletic, they were serious, they were adult...they are your dad's kind of wrestling. Perhaps...if money was spent wiser, if finance decisions had been made less liberally...if better booking decision were mad.e If they never sold to Turner...the questions that make a Mid-Atlantic fan yearn for an alternate universe. This diary aims to try and simulate that alternate universe...by going back to 1983. The year of Starrcade, the year that everybody was succeeding...and anything could happen. We will follow the ethos of Mid Atlantic and NWA. Aiming to present wrestling as a serious sport. Titles, money, respect. Realistic storylines. Perhaps one day, uniting the alliance under one banner. And ensuring our dominance in the South can be established and maintained, maybe we beat the WWF, maybe we don't, or maybe Mid Atlantic, or JCP, whichever you prefer, become the company of the South and The WWF the company of the North. Maybe history will repeat itself, but this diary will tell a simple story. The Legacy Of Mid-Atlantic.
Diary Goals 1. Emulate the Mid-Atlantic and NWA booking style as best as I can 2. Unite N.W.A under a single banner. 3. Compete with the WWF 4. Have fun.

Apologies for delay, super busy week of work.Quote: Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling 07/01/1983 Bob CaudleHello again wrestling fans and welcome to another edition of Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling and if you missed it last week, you sure missed one heck of a way of kicking off the new year! Gordon SolieThat's right Bob, Roddy Piper was fortunate enough last week to win an award from Pro Wrestling Illustrated, an award which was chosen by the fans and The NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair decided to show his face and make his opinion known! Johnny WeaverHe has organized a match for Piper here tonight where he must face off against an opponent of Flair's choosing. If Piper wins? He gets his opportunity for the ten pounds of gold! He gets his opportunity to be recognized as the best athlete in this sport today! Bob CaudleAnd if he loses? Then Flair also gets the luxury of putting together what could be Piper's last match. It's high stakes here tonight folks and you certainly don't want to miss it! But starting us off this evening we have Iceman King Parsons heading in the ring, against Angelo Mosca! |
Quote: Iceman King Parsons VS. Angelo Mosca VS. Iceman starts things off with a fast paced style that led to a somewhat surprising victory, earning him some admiration of the fans as he has a good showing an victory against Wrestling Veteran Angelo Mosca. Rated:55 |
Quote: One Man Gang VS. Porkchop Cash VS. One Man Gang continues his domination as he makes quick work of Porkchop Cash in a match that was clearly stacked against Cash from the beginning. He was put to end after One Man ang hit a big Bodysplash for the pinfall. With Oliver Humperdink ecstatic that one of his new agents were already making quick work of Mid Atlantic Roster members. Rated: 45 |
Quote: Ric Flair InterviewGordon SolieLadies and gentlemen thank you for joining me, at this moment in time I would like to introduce you to a man who is most certainly on everybody's mind after his actions last week, He is the National Wrestling Alliance World's Heavyweight Champion! Ladies and gentlemen Mr. Ric Flair! Ric enters the stage to a majority of booing fans, showing their disdain for the Nature Boy. Some girls however ddidn't care, they were screaming like Elvis had just entered the building and was swivelling his hips at them, which only caused Flair to smirk as he came in, championship over his shoulder, tinted shades and fine, Gucci brand Blue suit. Wearing easily five housand dollars worth of material on his person, let alone the value of the belt upon his shoulders. He pulls back the sleeve of his suit and shakes his wrist in the air, revealing a golden watch which he brings up to Gordon Solie's face. Ric FlairGordon...take a look at my wrist for a moment would you? Can you tell me what you see? Gordon SolieI see a watch... Ric FlairA watch? A WATCH?! Clearly you need to get yourself a prescription! Because this just ain't any watch on my wrist Gordon! This here is a two thousand dollar Rolex! This little trinket right here?! Is worth more than anything Roddy Piper...has ever done in wrestling and if you listen to it closely Gordon...you can hear the fine crafted hands ticking away. Tell the people if you can hear it! Gordon SolieWhy...why yes Mr Flair I can hear it but I don't kno- Ric FlairTHAT'S RIGHT YOU CAN HEAR IT! And you know who else hears it? Roddy Piper...because this two thousand dollar watch? It's ticking away the last moments that Roddy Piper will ever see on National Television! I have chosen an opponent Gordon Solie! I have chosen someone who I know is more than willing to help me uphold the respectability and legitimacy of this sport! I have chosen someone who is a CHAMPION in this sport...and I have chosen someone who understands the threat that street trash like Roddy Piper poses to our profession...and is happy to take on the task absolutely free of charge! Gordon SolieMr. Flair I must say I think it is ridiculous that you are going to such downright personal and in my opinion, outright disgusting opinions of Roddy Piper. There was no need for what you did last week and certainly no need for you to continue the way you are Ric FlairThat's where you're wrong Solie! See whether you love me or hate me, you all tune in to see me and that's for one very simple reason...because I'm the Best.Thing.Going. TODAY! WOOO! I am...a professional wrestler and as long as this belt is on my shoulders? It means I am the BEST professional wrestler in the sport today and to to be expected to sit there and watch as some little thug recieves an award for being The Most INSPIRATIONAL wrestler of the year?! Roddy Piper!? No Solie...somethin' has to change and somethin has to change fast. That's why I came out, that's why I said what I said and that is why tonight...I get myself a front row seat and I get to watch a very good friend of mine, a REPRESENTATIVE of this sport...put Piper in his place! I'm talking about your UNITED STATES CHAMPION! GREG VALENTINE!Flair smirks once more, after his announcement to hear the fans reaction, a mix of shock and hatred as they hear an old friend of Flair's is acting as Hitman for him here tonight. He walks off stage, flashing his championship to the screen as he does. Rated:66 |
Quote: Gene Anderson VS. Jimmy Valiant VS. Jimmy Valiant regains some momentum after his loss against Valentine last week and shows us all that the Boogie Woogie Man never lets a defeat keep his groove down for long baby! He defeats Gene Anderson in just over ten minutes after shucking and jiving his way to a pinfall with his Boogie Woogie Elbow Drop! Rated: 53 |
Quote: Terry Funk VS. Jerry Brisco VS. Terry Funk would take the easy way out when the wrestling ability of Jerry Brisco would prove to be a challenge. Brisco tried to get some revenge for what happened to his brother last week and put up a great fight against the dangerous Funk, but when things started looking tough, Funk intentionally Disqualified himself when he struck Brisco with a chair from the audience at ringside. Rated:62 |
Quote: After The Match And Terry Funk wastes no time after his so called defeat, because despite technically losing the match, he certainly was standing over him right now and he was delivering shots to the fallen Brisco! Folks we don't know what The issue is between the Funks and the Briscos right now but one thing we do know is it is VIOLENT! As Terry claws at Brisco's face and eyes, before stomping him into the ground. he begins fiddling with his waist, removing his belt from his pants and raising it in the air! He's planning on whipping Jerry Brisco! He's planning on whipping Brisco! BUT WAIT! JACK BRISCO IS RUNNING IN! Jack Brisco running in, in the nick of time to save his brother, and sends Terry high tailing it out of the ring and towards the back! Rated: 55 |
Quote: Roddy Piper VS. Greg Valentine VS. Piper and Valentine go to to toe in what can only be described as a brawl. Both men with severe intentions within their mind. For Valentine, he's doing a favor for his friend, for his former partner and in his mind, a favor for the wrestling industry, by trying to weaken and potentially take out Roddy Piper. Foor Piper, it's a chance at the greatest title belt in the industry! It's a shot at Ric Flair! It's to show that he CAN fight with the best of them. That he IS someone to be taken seriously! And it is clear from the get go that both of these men are on a mission. Wrestling ladies and Gentlemen, after all, is no bellet and we were seeing it here. No punches pulled, every shot taken with aim and purpose. Greg Valentine trying to stay on top of Piper, clubbing him, hitting him with over head punches, and elbows, trying to keep him on his knees with shots to the shins and the backs of the leg. Piper fighting back with gut punches, trying to take the wind out of Valentine. The two locking up, testing each others strength before Valentine whips around Piper and delivers an elbow to the back of the head. The two men scrambling, each one trying to get the other in the turnbuckle. Valentine trying to use his weight advantage against Piper, only for Piper to whip around him this time, pushing him towards the turnbuckle and causing him to bump his head against the pad. Moments like this were clear that it was scrappy. Piper would pick up the win after getting the sleepr on valentine. The referee raising Valentines arms three times. Rated:64 |
