AWWA Global Open Championship – V3
Akira Taue © [AJPW] vs. Bret Hart [WWF]
Bret Hart, like Rick Martel, did some tours in Japan in the early 80s. In NJPW, frankly. And being highly regarded in the western, as well as being the WWF Intercontinental Champion, the fans expected Akira Taue to have his toughest defense yet. And… they got a treat.
Once again, Taue played the big man role, with Bret playing the more technically gifted one. But at the beginning, the Japanese managed to neutralize Bret, hitting harder and even crushing the Canadian with a Suicide Dive to the outside. It was only after a while that Bret aimed at the legs of the champion to have him on the ground as much as possible.
To lock the Sharpshooter, however, was more difficult, but having the champion down made Bret work on his back too. But Taue’s big moves shook Bret, like a big Dynamic Kick halfway through that resulted in a near fall.
As the time progressed, both looked more worn than before, and Bret was able to put the Sharpshooter locked in, but Taue reached the ropes. Near the final: back-and-forth and Taue went for the Nodowa Otoshi, lift Bret up, but the challenger avoided being thrown to the mat. Bret locked the Sleeper Hold and released it for a Sharpshooter! But Taue does not quit! Almost reaching the ropes, Bret realizes it, releases the submission attempt and lifts Taue to his feet: Piledriver! 1…2…3! Bret Hart makes history and is now both WWF Intercontinental Champion and AWWA Global Open Champion.
Result: Bret Hart over Akira Taue --- New champion! --- 21 min.

AJPW World Junior Heavyweight Championship – V11
Masanobu Fuchi © vs. Kazuo Yamazaki
Kazuo Yamazaki was the first of the new faces of the Junior Heavyweight Division to challenge Masanobu Fuchi. But could be he the one to take the gold away from the veteran?
The two men started the match very cautious, specially Fuchi who was very defensive, well-aware of Yamazaki’s shooting ability. And in the first small mistake, the champion put the former NJPW and UWFi star on notice, catching his leg for an STF after a Roundhouse Kick attempt.
From then on, the match took place on the ground, more often than not, much to Fuchi’s liking, although the false finishes of the bout came from Suplex variation attempts from the part of both competitors. Yamazaki kicked out of the Bridging Belly-to-Back. Fuchi kicked out of a big Belly-to-Belly.
In the end, another mistake proved fatal for the challenger: another Roundhouse Kick failed, and Fuchi tried to lock the STF. To no success, this time. However, the champion caught Yamazaki by surprise with a Small Package Pin. 1…2…3! And just like that, Masanobu Fuchi is still champion. Possibly forever.
Result: Masanobu Fuchi over Kazuo Yamazaki --- Still champion! --- 17 min.
AJPW Recap from the Road:
Masanobu Fuchi met his next challenger right after dealing with Kazuo Yamazaki. At Global Open Special #3, Naoki Sano challenged Dean Malenko, who he admires, for a #1 Contendership Match at Jr. Glory Special #1. Malenko accepted and so did Giant Baba. Sano won, though, and after the main event came to the ring… only to be slapped by Masanobu Fuchi. The two then stared. One thing is sure: Fuchi knows that Sano is a threat to his 2+ year old reign.
The Team Carnival Qualifying Tournament ended… in respect. A great effort by The Fantastics wasn’t enough in the finals and The Can-Am Express are going to Champion Carnival. Both teams shook hands afterwards and the winners hugged. Dan Kroffat will be in one block, Doug Furnas in the other.
Mitsuharu Misawa isn’t done with Stan Hansen. Or at least he thinks he isn’t. Winning the Champion Carnival is in his mind, as he told the Triple Crown Champion at Puro Series B3. Misawa said he proved he can hang with ‘The Lariat’ and soon he’ll get to be better than the champion.
Bret Hart shocked a crowd, somewhat, defeating Akira Taue to become the second AWWA Global Open Champion, to close February. But the Japanese audience won’t get to miss him as AJPW goes to the Champion Carnival Tournament Tour. After the match, Giant Baba personally invited Bret Hart to participate in the league. The Canadian accepted.
At Puro Series B3, during Bret’s debut match, concern was palpable after a bad landing by Tsuyoshi Kikuchi at ringside. Now, it is known that the Junior Heavyweight member of Super Generation Army will miss a lot of time: 14 months, to be precise. Kikuchi is out with a broken neck.
