House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series, a prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019). Both series are based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin. House of the Dragon was created by Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO; Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are the showrunners. Based on parts of the novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons".
In the waning years of old king Jaehaerys Targaryen's reign, fatal tragedies took his two eldest sons, Princes Aemon and Baelon, leaving the succession undecided. A Great Council is convened for the Westeros lords to choose a future ruler. Jaehaerys' grandchildren, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, married to wealthy Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Prince Viserys Targaryen, Rhaenys' younger cousin and husband to Lady Aemma Arryn, are the two candidates. By Westerosi law, a male heir has precedence over a female descendent, despite their birth order.
