WCW Slamboree
The opening video began with all the previous WCW Slamboree logos, before transitioning into clips from the Slamboree’s over the year, and then transitioning into the new era highlighting competitors from tonight’s show.
Mike Tenay and Nigel McGuinness open the show and quickly go through the card before announcing that a new match has been made for tonight. Bobby Fish will be facing off against Mance Warner, with the winner getting a shot at the WCW World Television Championship. They then transitioned to showing footage from just before the PPV began. Staff had been out setting up a bunch of ladders in the aisle for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship match, but Cesar Duran came out and yelled at them to take them back. “This is a ladder match, not a ladders match.” By the time it was done there was only one ladder left for the match.
WCW World Cruiserweight Championship: Ladder Match: Dralistico vs. Jack Evans vs. Lio Rush vs. Little Guido vs. Myron Reed vs. Paul London
Match: A quick spring, all six men started fighting as soon as the bell rang, making it difficult for anyone to get to the ladder at first. As the action spilled to the outside with dives onto each other, it was Little Guido who managed to avoid that and smartly went right for the ladder to bring it into the ring to make the first attempt to climb to the top. It was Myron Reed who pulled Guido down and connected with a Cutter to make the save. As the match went on a couple of loose teams seemed to form with Rush working with Reed, and veterans Guido and London working together. Evans and Dralistico tried to work together, with Chavo Guerrero trying to lead the way, but it soon broke down. Highlights of the match saw Dralistico pulling Evans off of the ladder and turning on him, which would eventually lead to Evans getting his revenge with a Springboard corkscrew moonsault on the outside. Little Guido and Paul London worked together to hold Rush to the match, while London moved the ladder to the corner. Paul London slowly climbed, reminding fans of his ROH days with a Shooting Star Press off of the ladder! But Reed had attacked Guido, and together Lio Rush and Reed held Guido down so that London connected with him. They then got rid of London, and both men started to climb the ladder. At the top Lio Rush and Myron Reed were looking at each other, before they started to punch away, but Lio Rush poked Reed in the eye and then sent him flying off of the ladder onto Paul London as he tried to get back into the action. That allowed Lio Rush to climb to the top and pull down the Championship belt becoming the NEW WCW Cruiserweight Champion!
Result: In a bout that had sub-par wrestling and little heat, Lio Rush defeated Myron Reed, Little Guido, Paul London, Jack Evans and Dralistico in a Ladder match in 10:10 when Lio Rush retrieved the item. Lio Rush wins the WCW Cruiserweight title. (53)
Alicia Atout tried to interview Mance Warner backstage, with Warner being his usual entertaining self, but Bobby Fish interrupts and tells him he won’t be laughing when Fish is done wrecking him.
Bobby Fish vs. Mance Warner
Match: Mance brought his unorthodox brawling style to the match, which resulted in Bobby Fish having to rely onto his strikes to try and regain control. Still Warner looked like he was about to get the victory as he set up for the Knee Pad Up, Knee Pad Down! But Bobby Fish may have been faking it as he managed to take Warner down with a Drop Toe Hold and locked on the Fish Hook submission in the middle of the ring. Warner tried to fight against it and make it to the ropes, but they were too far away and he had to tap out!
Result: In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Bobby Fish defeated Mance Warner in 10:26 by submission. (53)
Video package on FTR/Island Monsters
FTR vs. Islander Monsters (Jacob Fatu/Jeff Cobb)
Match: The beginning of the match saw Fatu and Cobb taking turns using their power to dominate both Dax and Wheeler, until FTR had an opportunity to regroup. After that regroup, FTR took advantage of their expertise in tag team wrestling to isolate Fatu from Cobb and work him over. It looked like they might even get the victory when they connected with the Powerplex, but Fatu kicked out and then managed to fight to get the tag to his partner. Cobb managed to use his impressive display of power and Suplexes to take over, and now it was Dax who was unable to make the tag as the Island Monsters managed to dominate him. During this time Cesar Duran was shown walking out from the back to get a better viewpoint on the tag team he had brought together dominating. Finally, Hardwood managed to take advantage of a miscommunication between the two Monsters, and made the tag to his partner. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the beginning of the end as Cobb put Wheeler down with the Tour of the Islands, before nailing Dax off of the ring apron. A tag to Fatu led to the Mighty Moonsault and the surprising pinfall victory
Result: In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Island Monsters defeated Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood in 17:35 when Jacob Fatu pinned Cash Wheeler. (71)
After a video package is shown on the WCW World Television Tournament and the Block Winners, Chris Hero and Willie Mack, Cesar Duran is shown walking backstage with a smile when he is called to come and check out something. A camera follows him as he comes across both members of Subculture on the ground and suffering after some sort of beatdown. Alicia Atout arrives on the scene to see the carnage, and Duran is asked about the match for the WCW World Tag Team Championship and if this changes it. With a grin Duran says it will still be four teams tonight, as some team has “just earned themselves an opportunity through violence.”
Before the next match could begin….“Walk” by Pantera and out walks Rob Van Dam! He stops to do his trademark thumb pose with the WCW World Television Championship belt hanging from his bicep. RVD made his way to the ring with the belt, ready to present it to the winner of the next match.
WCW World Television Championship: Chris Hero vs. Willie Mack
Match: As the bell rings Chris Hero tries to win the match right away with a Knock Out punch, but that only gets a two count! As Willie stumbled to his feet, Hero backed into the corner, and then connected with the Rolling Elbow! But after Hero hit the move, the momentum resulted in Mack rolling out of the ring. Hero tried to go after Mack out there, but got sent into the railing which allowed Mack to roll back into the ring to recover a little bit. Hero didn’t give him much time to recover, which set the tone for the match as Hero controlled most of the action as Mack couldn’t quite recover. But perhaps it was because Hero hadn’t wrestled regularly in a while, but as the match went on, he started to slow down. And the finish of the match saw him attempt to lift Mack up with the Hero's Welcome Championship Edition, but he couldn’t finish it off, and instead Willie landed behind him and connected with a German Suplex, and then a Chocolate Thunder Bomb for the three count and became the NEW WCW World Television Champion!
Result: In a decent match, Willie Mack defeated Chris Hero in 14:54 by pinfall with a Chocolate Thunder Bomb. Willie Mack wins the WCW World Television title. (61)
RVD gets into the ring to present the WCW World Television Championship belt to Mack, and then we see Bobby Fish watching from the stage in anger.
Backstage Alicia Atout attempted to interview Nick Aldis, but he was still angry about getting screwed when the referee didn’t notice his foot under the rope, but he said it didn’t matter because he was going to win the second chance match tonight, and then win the WCW World Championship, and then he stormed off.
Second Chance Four Way Elimination Match, Winner gets the first shot at the WCW World Champion: 2 Cold Scorpio vs. El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Johnny Nitro vs. Nick Aldis
Match: It quickly became clear that there may have been a strategy going into this match, perhaps one arranged by Cesar Duran himself, as while there was frequent tags made they did not involve El Hijo del Vikingo. The result was Vikingo fought all three men off, before 2 Cold Scorpio grabbed a steel chair that he used to nail Vikingo! This resulted in the disqualification elimination of 2 Cold Scorpio and weakened Vikingo. Both Aldis and Nitro attempted to take advantage of that, but Vikingo would not go down. At one point Nitro tagged Aldis into the ring, and Vikingo sent Aldis flying back towards Nitro with a Dropkick, and then was able to roll Aldis up for the quick elimination! This left Nitro and El Hijo del Vikingo to settle things, which went back and forth until Nitro attempted to go for the Starship Pain, just to have Vikingo move and instead connect with the Inverted 450 Splash for the final elimination and victory!
Result: In a decent match, El Hijo del Vikingo defeated 2 Cold Scorpio, Johnny Nitro and Nick Aldis in an Elimination match in 11:01; the order of elimination was 2 Cold Scorpio first, then Nick Aldis, and finally Johnny Nitro. (64)
After a commercial announcing the return of WCW The Great American Bash on June 18 the fans were asked to rise and welcome to the stage…..
…MADUSA! After a shot ovation, Madusa walked over to a raised dais and spoke about how the fans had been asking about a Womens division in WCW, and she was proud to announce that the fans were going to be getting their answer, and then she lifted a bag off of the dais and revealed the WCW Womens World Championship! Madusa talked about how it had been her pleasure to compete for the belt, but she had never worn it as it had instead been dominated by two great wrestlers from Japan, Akira Hokuto and Devil Masami. In recognition of the history of the Championship, there would be eight women representing North America, and four women representing Japan competing in a tournament to crown the new WCW Womens World Champion. Before Madusa could announce anything further, she was interrupted by….
…AJA KONG! Kong came out and took the microphone away from Madusa and said she would win the belt, which resulted in the two coming face to face, until music started to play and out walked…..
….”THE CEO” MERCEDES MONÉ! As the fans cheered for her, Moné made her way over to the new belt and it was clear that she was planning on winning the tournament and becoming the new Champion!
A recap package showed the four teams that were originally slated to compete for the WCW World Tag Team Championships before ending on the injury to Subculture. The three teams came out for the match before familiar sounding music played, and out walked….
….HOMICIDE AND LOW KI!
WCW World Tag Team Championship: Aussie Open vs. Homicide/Low Ki vs. Motor City Machine Guns vs. The Von Erichs
Match: This match went back and forth with lots of frequent tags, and a lot of hot action throughout the match. Things took a bit of a turn when Low Ki kicked Marshall in the face a little too hard, which brought older brother Ross into the ring swinging with fists of fury. Soon both teams were fighting outside of the ring, and Chris Sabin took a big dive that took out both teams. When Shelley tried for a dive of his own, he was instead taken out by a Clothesline from Mark Davis that led to the Coriolis and Aussie Open became the NEW WCW World Tag Team Champions!
Result: In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Aussie Open defeated Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, The Von Erichs and Low Ki and Homicide in 11:43 when Kyle Fletcher pinned Alex Shelley with the Coriolis. Aussie Open win the WCW World Tag Team titles. (67)
A video recapped Bill Golberg returning to WCW with great fanfare, just to be attacked by Joey Janela, leading to Golberg’s return and promise to beat Janela in a match of his choosing, leading to a Jersey Street Fight between the two.
Jersey Street Fight: Bill Goldberg vs. Joey Janela
Match: Janela came out first and immediately began to set up weapons in the ring, a table inside, and a table outside. Meanwhile Goldberg made his way out with a huge fanfare and a lot of pyro, before making his way into the ring. Immediately Janela attacked Goldberg with a series of weapons, most of which Goldberg shrugged off, but finally he did go down to his knees. Janela bounced off of the ropes and went to swing a Kendo Stick, but Goldberg ran him over with a Spear! Goldberg looked ready to end the match, when all of a sudden Real1 rolled into the ring and nailed Goldberg in the back with a steel chair! That caused Golberg to stumble forward, and Janela went for a DDT and then a pin fall, but Goldberg kicked out at one! Janela and Real1 pulled Goldberg to his feet and sent him off the ropes, but he took them both down with a Clothesline! Real1 came up first and Goldberg took him out with a sick Kick to the head, and then he drove Janela through the table in the corner with a Spear! The table was DESTROYED! Both men slowly made their way out of the table wreckage, and it was Goldberg who was able to put Janela away with the Jackhammer!!
Result: In a decent match, Bill Goldberg defeated Joey Janela in 5:58 by pinfall with a Jackhammer. During the match we also had Real1 run in and attack Goldberg. (60)
A video played on the history of the WCW World Championship showing highlights of some of the men who had held the belts through the year before transitioning into highlighting Jay White and Kota Ibushi and the build up to the match.
After Jay White and Kota Ibushi were in the ring, familiar music began to play and out walked DDP! DDP made his way to the ring which annoyed Jay White, but DDP told him to calm down that he was out there to make some announcements. He reminded the fans that it had already been announced that “the true grand daddy of them all” would be returning in December when WCW Starrcade is live on December 31! But the night before on December 30 the WCW Hall of Fame will return, and this year it will be all about one man….the man who will present the WCW World Championship to the winner tonight…that man is the greatest World Champion of all time…..
…”THE NATURE BOY” RIC FLAIR! Flair made his way out to a loud ovation, before turning around walking back to the entrance where Conrad Thompson could be seen giving the WCW World Championship belt to Ric Flair who raised it up in the air before walking down to the ramp with the belt so that the Main Event could begin.
WCW World Championship: Jay White vs. Kota Ibushi
Match: This match started slow, mostly because of Jay White stalling and mocking the fans at the beginning of the match. That backfired on him when Kota turned the speed of the match up with a Golden Triangle Moonsault. From there Ibushi managed to keep control of the match for a little bit, but it didn’t take long for White to go low behind the referee’s back allowing him to take back over. The closest pin fall for Ibushi came when he connected with the Golden Star Powerbomb, but White just kicked out. As the match continued White managed to get back in control and got the three count after the Blade Runner to become the NEW WCW World Champion!
Result: In a bout that had great wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Jay White defeated Kota Ibushi in 23:27 by pinfall with a Blade Runner. Jay White wins the WCW World Heavyweight title. (77)
OOC: I have decided to post this as is as it might end up being the final show. With everything going on in the world of wrestling right now, both the sad, and the bad (involving some wrestlers who I had planned to build this diary around) I am just not feeling it anymore. If things drastically change I might come back to this diary, more likely I take the concept to an earlier point in time, but for now I am going to take a break. Thank you for everyone who read!
