AGM 1893: Election Nominees
Crewe Alexandra
Crewe Alexandra are a founding member of the Football Alliance and the Football League 2nd Division who seem to swing between fairly middling seasons and competing for the title. Following an incredibly tight season in the mid-table they find themselves facing re-election.
Doncaster Rovers
Having finished 5th of 13 teams in the Midland League, Doncaster Rovers are looking to make a step up to the Football League and take one of the new spots in the Football League following a few middling seasons.
Grimsby Town
Grimsby Town are fairly unlucky to be facing re-election as they only fall in due to goal difference. Given the massive gap between the top 3 teams and the rest of the league however, perhaps some new blood is needed in the league to try and increase competitiveness. Grimsby have always been a consistently middling team and would likely be a reliable side in the next season.
Liverpool
Following rejection last season, Liverpool once again apply to join the league following a strong showing in the Lancashire League in which they won. Looking to be building up quite the strong side, Liverpool could be a strong pick to join.
Loughborough Athletic
Looking to be the weakest team applying to join the league, Loughborough Athletic finished 8th in the Midland League but some do say there is some promise in the squad they have and could be better next season. Given their poor finish last season however it admitting them to the league would be a gamble.
Newcastle United
Following the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End, Newcastle United looked to be potentially the last strong side in the Northern League, winning the division as other teams were not competing. Looking to follow in the footsteps of Sheffield Utd and Ironopolis before them, they now seek to join the Football League.
Nottingham Forest
Despite being outside the league, Nottingham Forest have had a fairly successful run recently and have been looking set to build a squad capable of competing in the 2nd Division should they get re-admitted to the league,
Rotherham Town
Formerly known as Lunar Rovers and currently Champions of the Midland League, Rotherham Town now look to make the step up and join the expanding Division 2, likely with the hopes of expanding their title winning run to three full seasons and bringing a higher level of football to Clifton Grove.
Small Heath
A worst ever season for Small Heath as the side from Birmingham continues to struggle, seemingly unable to attract players of the same caliber as local rivals Aston Villa and St George's. Despite this the side is once again re-applying for admittance to the league, clearly believing next season will have a better outcome.
Stoke
Seemingly unable to find themselves outside the bottom 4 teams, Stoke once again find themselves facing re-election. A founding member of the Football League it would certainly be a shame to lose the side, particularly with the possibly of matches against Burslem Port Vale next season but they also need to improve if they wish to retain their status in the league.
Walsall Town Swifts
Having lost their spot in the Football League 2 years ago now, Walsall Town Swifts once again are applying for entry to the Football League. They're looked a solid side in their local leagues and could be a solid option to bring back as part of the expansion.
Woolwich Arsenal
A major club down in London, admitting Woolwich Arsenal to the league could prove a huge gamble. Based in an area where football is primarily amateur and with the extra travel required to make games happen, adding a London side could prove an increased range for the league and build exposure but the extended travel could also be trouble for the teams.
