1895/96 Division 2 - Week 24
Leicester Fosse vs. Crewe Alexandra
Crewe are a side who have really come into their own this season and are now looking on track to gain a spot in the promotion playoffs if they are able to avoid losing the 6 point gap they have over Everton and Wolves. Their opponents Leicester are a side who look set to secure a spot in the mid-table of the league in what has been a decent debut campaign. Crewe scored early in this match that was fairly back and forth with a goal in the 11th minute to put them ahead. Both sides had a few more chances which would eventually lead to nothing as the final whistle would blow and give Crewe the 1-0 win.
Loughborough vs. Fairfield
Loughborough are have a good season, but it is still quite strange not seeing them draw half their games in a season. Their opponents this week are Fairfield who looked to be having a solid debut season in the league, but a late collapse has seen them slipping closer and closer to the re-election places and now they look to be a side potentially at risk. A 17th minute goal would definitely hinder Fairfield's chances in this match and it was clear they were thoroughly outclassed by superior opposition. An second goal in the 80th minute for Loughborough would seal Fairfield's fate, with a 4th consecutive defeat.
Everton vs. Notts County
A fairly predictable match I expect as Everton win secure their spot in the football league with any point gained and a win will keep them as a potential outsider to the promotion hunt, while Notts County have struggled to really kick on this season and are looking are now 6 points away from safety. As expected Everton were far and away the better side, scoring in the 22nd and 65th minutes in a match that easy could have seen them scoring more. Everton are now confirmed to be in the Football League next season.
Bury vs. Accrington
An incredible debut campaign by Bury who look set to enter the promotion playoffs come the end of this season take on a Accrington side that have pretty solidly cemented themselves as a part of the midtable group, which they set top of. It is another strong win for Bury who completely shut down Accrington's attack and score twice in the 38th and 77th minutes to remain top of the table.
Sunderland AFC vs. Grimsby Town
Sunderland look to be a side that are down and out of the league after 3 years of struggle. Whether or not they will be able to successfully survive re-election is debated, but many expect the league to drop them and leaving Albion as the one side in Sunderland. Their opponents this week in Grimsby however do provide an opportunity to score a win against a side that are also fighting to maintain their spot in the league. Grimsby scoring early however puts a damper on these hopes and despite controlling possession, Sunderland struggle to find chances. In the second half they find the equaliser however in the 58th minute and the winner in the 82nd to move Sunderland into 15th place.
Bolton Wanderers vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers
The last two sides to finish bottom of Division One face off in this match as Wolves take on Bolton. The two sides have had very different fortunes this season with Wolves needing just a single point to maintain their status as a Football League side for next season, while Bolton are locked firmly in the reelection battle and have been constantly bouncing in and out of the bottom 3 spots. Neither side had much luck offensively and while quite evenly matched, the better side on the day won with a 70th minute goal securing the two points and Football League standing of Wolves.
Burnley vs. Nottingham Forest
A battle between two sides in the battle for safety in the league, Burnley have slowly fallen into the battle while Nottingham Forest have found their fortunes benefiting of strong attack form against some sides in the same region of the table as themselves, most notably a 6-0 dismantling of Bolton. Forest would open scoring in this one, with an early goal in the 14th minute. This however seems to have awakened the powerful attack of Forest who would score in the 28th and 35th minutes to go ahead at half-time and a 62nd minute goal would secure Forest the win.
Blackpool vs. Newcastle United
Our final match of the week sees the weakest defense in the league (Blackpool) take on Newcastle United. Should the Magpies win this match they will also secure themselves a spot in the Football League for next season, while a win for Blackpool would be enough to move them out of the bottom 3 spots. Blackpool would certainly try in this match but despite a few good spells it was clear Newcastle were the better side. Despite this Blackpool were able to keep holding on, preventing Newcastle from managing to score until a slip-up in the 83rd minute saw Newcastle take the lead and eventually walk away with the two points and confirming their spot in the Football League next season.
