1896 AGM - Division 2 Elections
Blackpool
It is a second season straight reapplying to join the league for Blackpool as they once again fall into the re-election spots. Once again though, the side was just a single win away from achieving safety and have shown they can certainly be competitive, with the potential to be a good side if they could just learn what defence is.
Burton Wanderers
Winner of the Pub League this season, Burton Wanderers are trying for the third seasons in the row to gain entry to the Football League. This side went undefeated across the whole Pub League and look to be one of the better candidates for election this year. Despite this, they historically struggle to get votes, so could have issues.
Dartford
A lucky break and a late good run in the Pub League saw Dartford finish in third place, allowing the side the opportunity to apply for entry to the Football League. Arguably the weakest side applying for re-election, Dartford are hoping to become one of the biggest sides in the South of England by joining up early with the Football League.
Gainsborough Trinity
Gainsborough have been competing in the Midland League since it was formed in 1890-91, with their last two seasons seeing the side finish runner-up on both occasions. Following these results, Gainsborough are looking to make the step up to join the Football League and look like they could be a decent midtable side if elected.
Glossop North End
The side that finished behind Gainsborough in the most recent season of the Midland League, Glossop look to be a side that has the potential to grow to become a strong side. As it stands however, it looks like they will just be a decent midtable side and the need to strength ahead of the season could see them send out a weaker side than they could possibly have.
Luton Town
Another side from further South, Luton Town were formed in 1885 and were a founding member of the Southern Football League having finished as the runner-up in the most recent season. The hatters look to have a the potential to a be a solid side, although their pitch at Dallow Lane does look as though it may not be of a high enough quality for the level of the league.
Macclesfield
Competing in The Combination, Macclesfield have recently formed up as a limited company and are looking to use the Football League as a way to step up and make themselves competitive at this level and help attract some more fans.
Notts County
Also known by some as Motts County, Notts County have been poor this season although historically always like to find a way to be one of the most exciting sides in the League ever since they broke Preston North End's undefeated run. Whether or not they retain their consistent run of being in Division Two however is currently up in the air.
Stoke
When at first you don't succeed, try and try again. This seems to be Stoke's attitude to getting elected to the Football League as they are once again applying for election following years of unsuccessful application. Will this be the year where that changes?
Sunderland AFC
A side that definitely feels like they are on the decline, as Sunderland have been struggling for years to get themselves out of the bottom halves of the table, slipping further and further down as the seasons progress. A late run showed some hope for Sunderland's survival, but they fell into the bottom 3 anyways.
Tottenham Hotspur
A side that have only just turned professional recently, Spurs are looking to become one of the London's premier clubs by backing the Football League and hoping to establish themselves as a strong presence in the league.
