1897/98 Division 2 - Week 6
Stoke vs. Leicester Fosse
Despite a winless start, Stoke are only a single goal away from being in the top half due to a string of draws that have given them a solid start to the season. Their opponents this week are a Leicester side who will surely be looking to bring in some better results than they have started the season with. A goal in the 11th minute saw Stoke take their first win of the season as they looked the better side over the course of the match.
Nottingham Forest vs. Newcastle United
Both of these are sides who have been off to a solid start to the season so far, with Forest currently undefeated, although with only a single win. The visitors Newcastle meanwhile have a fairly mixed record but having come out winner more often are looking set for a solid season. Nottingham Forest looked the better side and for the sixth game running avoided conceding, scoring once in the 52nd minute to take the win.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Accrington
Unarguably the biggest match of the week, both of these sides are tied on 8 points and are the only two sides within striking distance of top of the table Burton. Whoever wins this match will be in a strong position to take the win, while the other side will be forced to play catch up. There is one other option of the classic Div 2 0-0, which despite Wolves best efforts they failed to create many chances and converted none, forcing the two sides to split the points.
Loughborough vs. Nelson
Two sides that have both struggled so far this season, with only a single win between them. Loughborough however look better having a win and having actually scored a goal. For both sides this is a good chance to get some momentum going for the season ahead. Nelson would break their goalless start by scoring in the 52nd minute and looked a lot better in this match, but a goal for Leicester in the 82nd minute meant the points were split between the two sides.
Burnley vs. Everton
If you like seeing goals I have no clue why you are here. Both of these sides have played 5 matches so far this season, seeing a grand total of 5 goals between them, with Burnley yet to score. In one of the dullest matches the football league with ever see, there was just a single shot on target for the whole 90 minutes of the match which was successfully saved by the Burnley keeper. A dull 0-0 which probably proved great viewing for those who wished to go to sleep.
Fairfield vs. Grimsby Town
Fairfield have picked up just a single win so far this season and this match is not a very strong contender for giving them another point, as Grismby are currently flying high having managed to even pick up an impressive win over Wolves. Grimsby opened scoring in the 32nd minute and took the lead into half time. An equaliser in the 55th gave Fairfield some hope but this was dashed as Grimsby just looked the better side and would score in the 68th and 82nd minutes to take the win.
Burton Wanderers vs. Bury
Burton Wanderers have gotten off to a great start to the season so far, having not dropped a single point, while Bury fans will be disappointed. Once the greatest side in the second division and tearing their way up, the side have only a single win with the loss to Wolves having ruined their goal difference and only a single goal scored. It's a very even match and both sides managed to make plenty of chances. Neither side was ever able to find the back of the net however and Burton Wanderers would drop their first point of the season. Not a bad result for Bury, but not what they needed to get the season going.
Luton Town vs. Birmingham St George's
Two sides on the same record, both of which are in the second division for the first time. I have little to say to build this one up that has not already been said about other sides so may as well just get to the match. This was not your usual Division 2 match as the two sides show that this division does still have some sides will to go for the win. St George's scored early in the 11th minute and looked the better side in the first half but as Luton started growing into the game an equaliser game in the 40th minute. The second half was more one-sided as Luton started showing an extra bit of quality and scored in the 67th and 80th minutes to take the win.
For our first team confirmed to be joining the second division is a returning side who has typically proved quite popular in the league and with the side reaching the first round of the FA Cup, it felt like now has a good time to confirm the return of Burslem Port Vale, who are set to join Division 2 South next season.
