Nitro Episode 17:
Wednesday 22 August 2001
Live late-night on FX
6,200 crowd from Nashville, Tennessee
Announcers: Tony Schiavone, Jerry 'The King' Lawler & Arn Anderson
----
Show opens up with Linkin Park's 'Runaway'
Tony Schiavone on commentary says it's Wednesday night folks and you know what that means! It's WCW Nitro, LIVE from NASHVILLE!
Jerry Lawler excitedly says we're here in the great State of Tennessee, lots of history in wrestling in this part of the world... Lawler stands up and claps as some of the fans start a JERRY JERRY JERRY chant.
And we've got a heck of a show for you tonight folks, says Schiavone, our opening match tonight is a rematch of last week's main event, which went to a 15 minute time-limit draw, with Team Canada and Windham & Rotunda facing off to determine who will challenge for the WCW World Tag Team Championships at Mayhem this Sunday!
Lawler says what happens if it goes to another 15 minute draw tonight?
Well folks I don't think we have to worry about that! says Schiavone. We've only had 1 of those in the Shane McMahon era of WCW, surely lightning can't strike twice?
-----
Match 1:
Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda vs Team Canada (Lance Storm & Mike Awesome) (with Carl Ouellet) - The winner will face The Nu Road Warriors for the WCW World Tag Team Championships at Mayhem
This match starts the show off with a bang as both teams come fighting out the gates trying to get the job done, both aware of the fact it could go to a draw like last week. Lance Storm and Barry Windham especially are both going all-out to try and get the victory.
The high energy start from Storm and Windham works against them as the match goes on, with Windham especially tiring a bit. Awesome and Rotunda get in on the action and the match kicks up into gear again, but neither side can quite find the edge.
Windham and Rotunda are both cautious of getting caught in the Canadian Maple Leaf which would've given Team Canada the win if not for the time-keeper's bell last week.
As the match wears on Storm and Windham are the legal men and after Awesome takes out Rotunda, Storm manages to get Windham back in the Canadian Maple Leaf submission and looks like he might make Windham tap out again. But then Windham somehow gets to the rope, Storm is forced to release the hold, then Rotunda comes back and starts brawling with Awesome and Ouellet on the outside, as Windham clotheslines Storm and then gets him in the Claw Hold!
It looks like Windham and Rotunda might get the win here! Anderson shouts in excitement. I think Storm will have to tap!!
What drama here, folks! Schiavone adds
It looks like Storm is fading and Windham and Rotunda will get the win when
*DING DING DING*
Wait a minute! says Tony
They've gone to a damn draw again! says Jerry Lawler
Windham releases the hold in frustration. He can't believe it, he thought he had it.
The match ends in a 15 minute time-limit draw - (61 rated)

Eric Bischoff comes out looking pretty annoyed with a microphone as he addresses the two teams who stand there waiting to see what he has to say.
So you two teams have wrestled for 30 minutes on national television over the last 2 weeks and neither of you have managed to get a pinfall or submission victory?! You know, I have a part of me that's thinking, maybe neither of you should challenge for the titles at Mayhem!
Fans boo
But if you two teams really can't be split, then well I guess there's only one other solution... at Mayhem... it will be a TRIANGLE tag team match, with The Nu Road Warriors defending against TEAM CANADA... and WINDHAM & ROTUNDA... and believe me, at the PPV there WILL be a winner one way or the other...
Wow! says Tony
The only thing better than a tag team match is a Triangle tag team match says Jerry Lawler
Just as the two teams are taking in the news we see Road Warrior Animal and Road Warrior Dog come out with the WCW World Tag Team Championships. They stand at the top of the ramp and hold their titles proudly in the air whilst staring down their two challenging teams.

Akira Hokuto and 'Sinister' James Mitchell are in Sable's office
Sable is having a go at Mitchell telling him that his client's actions last week were not what she wants to see in the WCW Women's division. Sable says La Diabolica wants her chance to get her hands on Hokuto before Mayhem, so Sable has made it official. Tonight, Akira Hokuto will face La Diabolica AND Meiko Satomura in a tag team match!
Akira Hokuto starts ranting angrily in Japanese.
Mitchell says Akira doesn't have a partner.
Sable says well tell her you better find one between yourselves or it will be a handicap match!

In the ring we see Rob Van Dam with a slight bandage on his face, he has on him the WCW United States Championship and a worried looking Bill Alfonso stands next to him in the ring.
RVD says his team might have won the match last Friday on Panic! but he doesn't see it as a win at all. He ended that show laid out in the middle of the ring whilst Sabu mocked me... and mocked my status as WCW United States Champion... Sabu, I said to you before, if you wanted a match, you just had to ask... but you've decided to try and get in my head, to try and make it personal... well Sabu, as you and anyone else who ever watched or wrestled in ECW will know... if you piss me off that just motivates me more! And believe me Sabu, I am VERY motivated to beat your ass now!
Now I'd love to put my WCW United States Championship on the line in a match with Sabu tonight... but I know Shane won't let that happen
Fans boo
So I'm calling out Joey Styles! Joey, I know you're on the booking committee for Friday Night Panic! So I'm making the challenge... Sabu... we've fought many times and you ain't getting any younger... so this Friday night, how about Rob Van Dam vs Sabu... and since you want to mock me with a ladder... might as well make it a LADDER match!!!!
Joey Styles starts to make his way out but just as he's coming out Shane McMahon comes out too. Joey turns around and starts having a go at Shane out of ear-shot of the fans as he's not speaking into the mic.
RVD in the ring looks annoyed.
Joey Styles on the mic says to Shane that he can't over-rule him! Joey says he will book the match for Friday Night and there's nothing that Shane can do about it.
Shane wrestles the mic off of Joey Styles and says this is his company and there damn sure is something he can do about it. Shane says he won't be booking that match for Nitro tonight... but it won't be happening on Friday Night Panic! either
RVD gets hot and says "SHANE! SHANE WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS, MAN, IF YOU DON'T TRUST ME, IF YOU DON'T THINK I CAN BEAT SABU TO DEFEND MY TITLE THEN I DON'T KNOW WHAT-
Shane says let me finish Rob! I understand that this is a match that the fans want to see... I understand I can't over-rule Joey in booking it for Friday Night Panic! out-right, but what I can do is this...
It will be Rob Van Dam vs Sabu in a Ladder match for WCW United States Championship... but if the Network through Joey Styles can force me to book this match... then I'll damn sure make a bit more money off seeing you send Sabu back to Philadelphia school-gyms! Because that match for the WCW United States Championship will not take place this Friday on Panic!... it will take place this SUNDAY at MAYHEM!!
Wow! says Tony! Another blockbuster match announced for Mayhem, but I have to say the consequences of Sabu winning that match doesn't bare thinking about, he's not even contracted to WCW. Does that mean if he wins he gets a contract?
I don't think he stands any chance, says Jerry, those wrestlers from Extremely Crappy Wrestling were all worthless losers.
What about Van Dam? says Tony.
Van Dam is a WCW guy! Lawler says, he's put that rubbish behind him, he's adapted, Sabu can't adapt, look at him. Van Dam has this in the bag.

Match 2:
Shannon Moore vs Vampiro
The announcers mention the recent disappearance of Shannon Moore's tag-team partner, believed to potentially be at the hands of his opponent tonight Vampiro. Well Moore confronted him last week and Vampiro promised Moore if he could beat him in a match tonight then he would give him information...can Moore get the win tonight?
This match has high energy with Shannon Moore coming out the gates aggressive and fighting hard to try and help his team-mate. This makes it difficult for Vampiro early on but eventually he works his way into the match. At one point Moore is on the out-side and seems to get his foot caught on the ring apron which delays him slightly and Vampiro gets back into the match.
Moore does his best but eventually Vampiro's superior experience and strength is too much for him. Vampiro gets the win with his Michonoku Driver.
Vampiro wins via pinfall - (5.29) - (52 rated)
----
After the match Vampiro gets some Faygo from a bottle he brought out to ringside and then smiles evilly into the camera.
Oh wait a minute, says Tony.
The lights go out
This guy is into some real freaky stuff! says Lawler. I hope Moore isn't going to face the same fate as his tag team-partner. Hey, Tony, are you holding my hand??
When the lights come back on Vampiro is forcing an entire big bottle of Faygo down Moore's mouth just like he did to Karagias a few weeks ago.
That's Kidman! says Tony. He's had his problems with 3 Count but I think maybe his dislike of Vampiro in recent weeks trumps those issues.
Kidman races down to the ring, slides in and starts stopping Vampiro from doing whatever it is he's trying to do to Moore. Vampiro looks at him furious and shouts at him that he told him to stay out of his business. Kidman looks hot and is set to start fighting him when the lights go off again.
When they come back on Shannon Moore is still in the ring, albeit covered in Faygo. Kidman helps Moore up.

Eric Bischoff in Shane's office.
Kwee Wee is in there asking Bischoff for a chance to prove himself. Kwee Wee says everyone thinks he's one big joke, sure he's on a bad run but he's not been given a fair chance since Shane McMahon took over the company. Kwee Wee says Eric give me a chance tonight and I'll beat anyone on this roster...
Bischoff says anyone, hey? Well I know someone who asked me for a warm-up match for Mayhem earlier tonight... you want a chance to prove yourself Kwee Wee? Okay, well you asked for it, tonight, in the main event you're going 1-on-1 with 4 TIME WCW World Heavyweight Champion... Booker T!
Kwee Wee looks like he might have bitten off more than he can chew.
DDP and Kanyon suddenly came barging in.
DDP and Kanyon corner Bischoff. Eric asks them what they want. DDP says they've got a proposal that they're sure Bischoff will be on board with.
I'm all ears says Eric.
DDP and Kanyon say they want a match with The Extreme Alliance at Mayhem. From what they've heard Axl Rotten was in the same hospital as Mikey Whipwreck and neither of those guys are going to be cleared by Sunday... but that's okay... because at Mayhem we want Tommy Dreamer and Balls Mahoney!
Bischoff says well boys I'm sure that's a great idea in your minds but these Extreme Alliance guys, they're not even members of the WCW roster, could I really justify putting Dreamer and Mahoney on the card in a match over WCW talent?
Kanyon says at Mayhem they're not going to be in a match with us. They're going to be in a FUNERAL!!! Trust me Eric, you hate The Extreme Alliance as much as we do, you want to see them shipped off and dumped back in Philadelphia where they belong.
Well sure Chris, I can certainly agree with that, says Eric.
Then let us do that for you, Eric, says Kanyon enthusiastically. You want them gone. We want them gone. Who better than KANYON AND DDP?? To send these over-rated, over-hyped... and well let's be frank, over-weight hardcore stunt-men back to the welfare office!
Bischoff thinks about it and says... you know what... yes... yes I like that very much... consider it done! And how about we make it real symoblic... we make it... a DUMPSTER match!!
DDP says don't worry Eric we'll put those guys in the trash where they belong!
Fans cheer

JJ Dillon interview with 'Dr Death' Steve Williams (with Jimmy Hart)
JJ asks Steve Williams about the match last week. Jimmy Hart gets involved and says Steve you don't have to answer that question if you don't want to, buddy.
'Dr Death' takes the mic and says Hugh Morrus might have got the better of him last week, when his meat-heat friends The Harris Brothers eliminated him from the match... but the bottom-line is if Hugh Morrus wasn't such a coward and fought him like a man he wouldn't STAND A CHANCE against DR DEATH.
Hugh Morrus suddenly appears on set with The Harris Brothers guarding him in-front of him. 'Dr Death' looks up for a fight but he knows he can't beat all 3 of them.
Jimmy Hart says Dr Death would like to challenge you to a match at Mayhem, Hugh, are you man enough to take the challenge? If so I'm happy to negotiate the terms and conditions with Eric Bischoff and get it in writing.
Hugh Morrus laughs and says he has nothing to prove against Steve Williams. He beat him in a match last week and as far as he's concerned 'Dr Death' isn't on his level. Williams laughs at him and angrily calls him a cowardly bastard.
Morrus says he is willing to give 'Dr Death' a chance to prove he can compete on his level. Hugh Morrus says tonight if 'Dr Death' can win a handicap match against Don and Ron Harris, then Hugh Morrus will accept his challenge and fight him at Mayhem. Good luck, bud, he says as the 3 of them walk off.
WOW! says Tony Schiavone. That's a hell of a challenge that I'm not even sure 'Dr Death' himself can meet.

Match 3:
Fit's Fight Club (Fit Finlay and Tajiri) (with Dave Taylor) vs Terry Funk & Christopher Daniels
Well, says Tony, this match was made last week by Eric Bischoff after a fight commenced between these 5 men. Interestingly Bischoff made it so that Fit Finlay would have to decide who out of Dave Taylor and Tajiri would team with him tonight and he's gone with the younger and more agile Tajiri, do you question that choice Jerry?
Lawler says that he thinks it's smart. Funk has a much younger guy in there with him and with that comes a certain amount of extra energy and so he's matched up like for like by getting his own young talent in Tajiri in there too.
This match primarily show-cases Daniels and Tajiri who spend most the match as the legal man, towards the end of the match Finlay and Funk come in for a brawl but they eventually tag back out with Daniels and Tajiri as the legal men.
As the match comes to a close it looks like Daniels will hit Tajiri with an Angels Wings but Tajiri counters it, hits him with a Buzzsaw Kick and gets the win.
Fit's Fight Club win via pinfall - (5.56) - (53 rated)
After the match Fit gets in the ring and holds Tajiri's hand up in celebration.

Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo promo
O'Haire and Palumbo cut a promo in the gym.
O'Haire says it's another week of Nitro and oh look O'Haire and Palumbo aren't on the card yet again. Did you know it's been over 1 month without me even wrestling a match on TV? The powers that be at WCW... Shane McMahon... Eric Bischoff... they don't think we have what it takes... but when Shane McMahon bought this company we were champions
Now we're just chumps, groans Palumbo.
O'Haire says he's sorry that we don't have 10-15 years of experience. I'm sorry we aren't the best technical wrestlers in the world. I'm sorry we haven't wrestled in Mexico, Japan or Europe. I'm sorry we're not demonic entities from the Underworld able to call upon a higher power to get an assist in a tag team match. But most of all, I'm sorry to whoever it is that does end up in a ring with us in the near future... because it's clear that we need to make a big statement to the power's that be in WCW. But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

Buff Bagwell (with Buff Daddy V) in Shane's office with Shane McMahon and Eric Bischoff
Shane is having a go at Buff Bagwell for what he did to Dusty Rhodes last week on Nitro. He hospitalised a WCW Hall of Famer and bonafide legend of the business. Shane says Buff can't be doing stuff like that without facing consequences.
Buff looks annoyed and says it's not his fault an over-weight has been got in his ring and got what's coming to him.
Shane says this is a serious situation and if Dusty Rhodes sued WCW/Buff Bagwell then he could get fired and face further legal action.
Buff looks a bit concerned but puts on a brave face.
Shane says that Dusty Rhodes has promised not to sue WCW or Buff Bagwell on one condition
Buff asks what the condition is
Shane says on the condition that this Sunday at Mayhem, it will be Buff Bagwell going 1-on-1 with Dusty's son and a man who would quite like to get his hands on you... Dustin Rhodes!
Bagwell doesn't look too happy but he agrees to it.
Eric Bischoff says if I may Shane, I have an idea for this. This match shouldn't just be any match... it should be an AMBULANCE MATCH!!
Shane says he likes it, Buff is furious and says he didn't agree to that, Shane says you agreed to the match, it's happening, you better learn to like it!

Match 4:
Lash LeRoux vs Shawn Stasiak (with Mark Jindrak)
Tony says Shawn Stasiak in action tonight, although a noted absence at ringside is his manager Stacy Keibler who doesn't appear to have come out to the ring with him.
A damn shame if you ask me! says Lawler
Lash LeRoux gets a decent amount of offence in what is a quite open match with Stasiak cutting a distracted and frustrated figure at ringside, with the commentators mentioning how he doesn't look the same wrestler when Keibler isn't out there with him. They wonder why she's not there and what's gone on behind the scenes.
As the match draws to a close Stasiak hits the Fisherman Suplex a lot more aggressively than usual and gets the pin.
Shawn Stasiak wins via pinfall - (5.58) - (48 rated)
After the match Stasiak cuts a frustrated figure and he stomps Lash LeRoux several times before he leaves the ring with Jindrak.

Scott Hall and The Sandman with Kwee Wee backstage
Scott Hall says to Kwee Wee that Booker T wants to take out his driver and his car at Mayhem. Scott Hall says he's sure Kwee Wee would understand if Booker was trying to do that to whatever car he can afford on his measley contract, so Scott says he's willing to motivate Kwee Wee even more later tonight if he needs it. Scott Hall says he doesn't care if Kwee Wee wins or loses in the main event, but if Kwee Wee can at least hurt Booker T then he'll make it worth his while.
Kwee Wee says how do you even define hurt to make sure I get paid?
The Sandman punches Kwee Wee in the face who shouts out in pain.
The Sandman says now did that just hurt a bit, or are you hurttt?
Scott Hall laughs and they walk off

Dustin Rhodes promo
In a pre-recorded promo Dustin says he wanted his father to sue Bagwell for what he did to him, but Dusty talked him out of it because he believed whatever money he could get out of you would not be worth it compared to the pain I can dish out to you at Mayhem on Sunday.
An Ambulance match? I would've preferred to send you to the Morgue, Buff, but the hospital is good enough for me! See ya on Sunday, Buff.

Match 5:
Akira Hokuto (with 'Sinister' James Mitchell) & Stacy Keibler vs La Diabolica & Meiko Satomura
Tony Schiavone mentions on commentary that it seems like Akira Hokuto has roped in Stacy Keibler as her partner for this match.
There is a God! says Jerry Lawler
Tony says it seems like Keibler didn't come out to manage for Stasiak's match as she got offered the chance to take part in this match by Mitchell and Hokuto, whilst Keibler isn't exactly best buds with the champion, she has never liked Meiko Satomura so this is a chance for her to spite her, so Keibler was warming-up for this match, it's not clear if Stasiak was happy about that or not.
The match itself gives all 4 women the chance to show what they can do. La Diabolica comes off looking good, we don't get too much of a confrontation between her and Hokuto with her primarily hitting high flying moves on Keibler.
La Diabolica eventually gets the win with a Gory Bomb on Keibler.
La Diabolica & Meiko Satomura win via pinfall - (4.32) - (49 rated)
After the match Akira Hokuto looks furious at the loss and locks eyes with her rival for the WCW World Women's Championship at Mayhem, La Diabolica.

Vampiro promo
Vampiro cuts a promo where he rages at Billy Kidman for interfering with his business. Vampiro says he warned Kidman not to get involved with him. Kidman said he thought Vampiro had gone soft... but he's just getting started... Kidman you've bitten off more than you can chew with me, man... but here's a challenge for you... you want to know what a f***ed up juggalo can do when you p**s him off??

Booker T (with Sharmell) and Stevie Ray with Curt Hennig backstage
Curt Hennig is wishing Booker T good-luck in his match with Kwee Wee later tonight and he said he's got his back if Kwee Wee or Scott or Sandman try to pull anything funny. Booker T says thanks Dog and I gotcha back in the contract signing if they want to pull anything funny too.
Stevie Ray says the locker-room has had enough of The Extreme Alliance, Sandman, Scott Hall etc, the locker-room is behind Booker and Curt and guys like DDP, Kanyon and Rob Van Dam.
Booker says he's sure that Curt will win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Mayhem... Curt says if he does he'll let Booker T have the first shot at it, as it's only fair. Booker says that means a lot to him.

Match 6:
'Dr Death' Steve Williams (with Jimmy Hart) vs The Harris Brothers (Don & Ron) in a Handicap match - If 'Dr Death' wins, he will face Hugh Morrus at Mayhem
Hugh Morrus joins the announce team for commentary for this match. Tony asks him if he thinks 'Dr Death' can win this one, Hugh Morrus says he might be able to beat 1 Harris Brother, but 2? No chance
The Harris Brothers come out first with Don and Ron looking over at Morrus at the announce desk as if to say they've got this.
Suddenly from out of nowhere whilst The Harris Brothers aren't looking 'Dr Death' Steve Williams comes out of the entrance way. Ron Harris turns round and he gets his head damn-near taken off by a huge clothesline from 'Dr Death' which sees Ron clatter down onto the ramp.
Hugh Morrus on commentary can't believe it.
Hugh Morrus and Don Harris then start brawling on the way to the ring. They get in the ring and the referee blows his whistle.
Tony Schiavone on commentary says he's not sure how much of a handicap match this is now, given Ron Harris looks in no fit state to compete in this match. Hugh Morrus is panicking on commentary saying this is unfair, 'Dr Death' has cheated, he should be DQ'd
Don and 'Dr Death' fight for a few minutes in the ring but Williams eventually gets the upper hand. 'Dr Death' hits a Gutwrench Powerbomb on Don and goes for the pin.
Ron Harris can be seen trying to make his way to the ring to try and break up the count, but after making up a decent amount of ground down the ramp he collapses towards the end of it holding his neck.
'Dr Death' wins via pinfall - (3.39) - (47 rated)
A hugely impressive effort from 'Dr Death' and out of the box thinking, perhaps master-minded by Jimmy Hart, to get the job done.
Hugh Morrus slams his headset down and looks furious and scared looking down towards Williams in the ring.
'Dr Death' Williams has a huge grin on his face and shouts out that he'll see Hugh on Sunday!

Match 7 / Main Event
Booker T (with Sharmell) vs Kwee Wee
Booker T comes out pumped for his match tonight. We see Kwee Wee quickly run out from the apron whilst Booker T is making his entrance, but before he can get his hands on Booker T he's grabbed by Stevie Ray, then Booker T turns round to start beating on him.
Well looks like that Kwee Wee tried to take some inspiration from 'Dr Death' there, boys! says Jerry Lawler
He damn sure ain't no Steve Williams, laughs Arn Anderson
Booker T brawls with Kwee Wee and eventually throws him into the ring for the match to begin. It's all Booker T in the early stages, but Kwee Wee does get back into it at one point and seems to be extra motivated to try and get a result, but in the end Booker T, the former champion just has way too much for him.
Booker T ends up getting the win with a Book-End, not risking the Scissor Kick that's consistently given him issues with his back since he got run down by a car a few months ago.
Booker T wins via pinfall - (4.32) - (63 rated)

Booker T promo
After the match Booker T cuts a promo where he makes a promise to The Sandman and Scott Hall that once he's done with Sandman at Mayhem, he ain't going to ever drive again and that Bentley of yours, Scott, it's going to the Philadephia scrapyard where you got it from just like your buddy The Sandman!!

Scott Hall and Curt Hennig contract signing with Shane McMahon
When we come back from commercial break we see a table set-up in the ring, with Shane McMahon waiting for the contract signing.
Booker T is on commentary where he states he's just here to make sure The Sandman and Scott Hall don't try any funny business. Lawler asks Booker if there's any jealously here given it's Curt Hennig who has the match at Mayhem and not him. Booker says no, Curt earned his shot, I respect that and I respect Curt saying he'd give me the first shot at it if he does win.
Curt Hennig comes out to a decent pop and cuts a quick promo when he gets in the ring saying he's pleased to get the chance to do what he said he wanted to do when he came back to WCW and that was to win the big one.
Scott Hall comes out driven in his Bentley by The Sandman. He makes his way to the ring with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. The Sandman stares down Booker T at the announce desk before going to the ring with Scott Hall. Booker T stands up to stare him down and then makes his way to the ring telling Sandman he ain't going in the ring. Shane McMahon concurs and bans The Sandman from being in the ring for the contract singing.
Shane McMahon on the mic says the match will be a cage match. The only way to win will be via pinfall, submission or escaping the cage. Curt Hennig signs and the fans cheer.
Scott Hall teases the idea of not signing and then signs it anyway.
He grabs a mic and says to Curt that sure, he's made it so there can be no interference, no easy way out for Scott Hall to win the match. But you know what? That plays into my hands. This puts more pressure on you Curt because when you lose to me you will have nobody else to blame but yourself. Hall drops the mic then walks off without even looking at Curt Hennig again.
Curt looks pretty annoyed by this and the show ends with Scott Hall and Curt Hennig staring each other down, with The Sandman and Booker T also staring each other down.
