SummerSlam 2005
Date: August 21st, 2005
Brand: Dual-Branded
Location: Verizon Center, Washington D.C.
Attendance: 18,100
WWE Junior Heavyweight Championships: The Mexicools (Juventud Guerrera and Super Loco) (c) def. The Hooligans (Paul London and Brian "Spanky" Kendrick)
We open the biggest party of the summer with a fun Junior tag team match. While the Hooligans came close, The Mexicools got the win and kept the titles.
World Tag Team Championships: The Heartthrobs (Antonio Santell and Romeo Roselli) (w/Maria Kanellis) (c) def. Sean O'Haire and Glenn Bateman
An unholy union if you will, at the previous Raw PPV, we saw Glenn show up as a completely different person. Despite Sean being confused, he decides to work together with this new version of Glenn to the point of aiming for the Tag titles, however, instead of gaining the titles in a satisfying win, Glenn comes very close, but before the ref could hit the mat for the 3 count, the lights go out, and out comes...Kane? in a veil of fire, this Kane is more reminiscent of what the original Kane was before his unmasking, fully masked and fully sleeved, this leads to the Heartthrobs keeping the titles, but Glenn and O'Haire would try to come face to face with this new Kane, but the demon disappears before they can do anything.
WWE Women's Wrestling Project/Women's World Tag Team Championships; Winner Take All: Emi Motokawa and Kaori Yoneyama def. Kayo Suzuki and Hiroko Suzuki (c)
The Yakuza clan's dominance comes to a halt thanks to the never say die attitudes of both Kaori and Emi. Emi makes the decision to give Kaori the Women's Wrestling Project title as both have the Women's World tag titles.
WWE United States Championship: Jeff Hardy (c) def. Rene Dupree
Jeff Hardy since returning to the WWE would see immediate success by winning the US title from Muhammad Hassan, and would make a successful defense against former US champion Rene Dupree.
WWE Junior Heavyweight Championship: Gavin "Voltage" Spears (c) def. TAKA Michinoku
TAKA would return to the WWE the previous month and immediately make a challenge to the current Junior Heavyweight champion, but would come up short in his attempted victory.
No Holds Barred Match: Edge's Money In The Bank Cash-In Chance On The Line: Edge def. Randy Orton
Edge and Orton would get up each other's throats over the coming months, going back and forth about who is truly the best member of the Raw roster, after losing to Edge for the first time, Orton wants to up the ante on the stakes. As he calls for the stipulation to be a No Holds Barred match, not just for bragging rights, but for Edge's MITB cash in opportunity, Edge accepts because it's all he could do, as GM Stone Cold Steve Austin would make this match official for the Biggest Party of the Summer. The match is brutal and bloody, but ends with Edge barely skirting by with a win. As he gets support from Lita, who helps Edge out by blowing a fireball in Orton's face, ending with a Spear and a pin, and the opportunity kept.
WWE Women's World Championship: Lita (c) def. Melina Perez
Melina would gain the opportunity to face Lita for the Women's World title in a gauntlet match at Vengeance, but would come unsuccessful.
Kurt Angle def. Shawn Michaels
A dream match in the making, Kurt Angle would be drafted to Raw in the Draft, from day 1 on the red brand, he would aim for Shawn Michaels, someone he's been wanting to get his hands on for the last year or so since his NOAH excursion, and Stone Cold seeing the opportunity for the best match on the SummerSlam card, would put pen to paper a month in advance. Kurt and HBK would go to war on the mic, with Kurt bringing out Shawn's old manager Sherri Martel and mocking his cheesy theme song, HBK would retaliate by letting the dickhead Shawn from '97 come back for one night and stealing his gold medal. This lead to the match going from a showcase of talent into something more personal, and it showed in the match. Both men fought tooth and nail but it ended with Shawn passing out to Kurt's Ankle Lock.
World Heavyweight Championship: Batista (c) def. AJ Styles
Since Batista was drafted to SmackDown, Batista now has a whole new list of challengers waiting in line to dethrone The Animal, and one of them would be AJ Styles. A fun match leads to Batista retaining the title with a Batista Bomb.
WWE Championship; Last Chance Match (If Cena doesn't win he can't challenge for the title again for a year): Christian Cage (w/Travis Tomko) (c) def. John Cena
In our Main Event, Christian Cage faces former WWE champion and the leader of the Chain Gang, John Cena. A long but unforgettable bout sees Christian once again defeat Cena, which leads to the stipulation that Cena can't challenge for the WWE title for a year, however, before he could celebrate another great win...
WWE Championship: Edge def. Christian Cage (c)
WHAT?! Edge's music hits! Edge is cashing in his Money In The Bank briefcase! He makes quick work of his former long time partner and his now greatest rival, spearing him out of his boots and stealing the title right off of him. The show actually ends with Edge and Lita holding up their titles and sharing a deep, sloppy kiss on the stage as Christian is still stunlocked by what just happened.
