HALLOWEEN HAVOC (October 27, 1990)
Shane Douglas defeated Ricky Morton after a belly to belly suplex in 8:34.
Rating: **
Shane Douglas is thriving as a singles wrestler under Jim Cornette’s guidance. Douglas was pretty impressive in settling a grudge against Ricky Morton.
The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) defeated Tommy Rich and Terry Taylor when Hayes pinned Rich after a DDT in 11:43.
Rating: ** ¾
Tommy Rich has been openly searching for a tag team partner and paired up with Terry Taylor to battle the Fabulous Freebirds. Turns out, this wasn’t the pairing Rich was looking for as the Freebirds picked up a much needed win to keep them up in the tag team rankings.
Flyin’ Brian and The Z Man defeated The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane) when Brian pinned Eaton after a flying cross body in 13:45
Rating: *** ¾
(Flyin Brian and The Z Man won the WCW UNITED STATES TAG TEAM TITLES)
One of the teams the Freebirds and every other WCW tag team will be chasing is now Flyin’ Brian and The Z Man. The high flyers regained the United States tag titles after a classic match against the Midnight Express that ended when a misguided tennis racket shot from Jim Cornette hit Eaton, and Brian capitalized.
Stan Hansen pinned Doug Furnas after a Lariat in 7:12.
Rating: ¾
The rookie Furnas was in a little over his head tonight against the double-tough Texan, Stan Hansen. After Hansen dominated the early portion of the match, Furnas began mounting a comeback, but all it took was one Lariat to end it.
Doom (Butch Reed and Ron Simmons) defeated the Nasty Boys (Brian Knobbs and Jerry Saggs) when Reed pinned Saggs in 13:35.
Rating: ** ¼
In recent weeks, The Nasty Boys have come out and publicly stated they are the uncrowned world tag team champions despite a loss to the Steiner Brothers at the most recent Clash of Champions and demanded another shot. Doom took exception, saying if anyone should get another shot at the Steiners, it’s them.
This led to a brawl on a recent Saturday Night over who gets the next chance to kick the Steiner’s butts, which led to tonight’s match.
The teams did their best to try to outfight, and outcheat each other. But Teddy Long became the deciding factor, tossing a pair of brass knuckles to Butch Reed who used them to knock out Brian Knobbs behind the ref’s back.
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) and The Horsemen (Ric Flair and Arn Anderson) fought to a double countout in 18:20
Rating: ****
(The Steiner Brothers retained the WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES)
Nothing was settled for the world tag team titles. The ring couldn’t hold the Steiners and the Horsemen as the fight spilled to the floor and even into the crowd. Even Barry Windham and Lex Luger got involved ahead of their US title match later tonight.
Interview with Paul E. Dangerously
Paul E. most recently managed Mean Mark, who lost his challenge against Sting for the world title at last month’s Clash of Champions. During that match, Paul E. got involved and got body slammed by Sting for his troubles. He vowed to make Sting pay for that moment. Paul E. hasn’t been seen much since that event, but according to him, he’s been in Japan. And there he recruited the man whom he says will be the one to end Sting. Not simply just his world title reign, but end Sting in general.
From there we see a video package of a 450-pound monster known as Big Van Vader.
Lex Luger pinned Barry Windham after a powerslam in 13:11
(Lex Luger won the WCW UNITED STATES TITLE)
Rating: *** ½
He never lost the title, and now he has it back. Lex Luger is once again United States champion. Maybe it was just the placement on the card, inbetween Anderson & Flair’s tag title match, and Sid’s world title match coming up, but none of the Horsemen were available to help out Windham during the match.
Sting defeated Sid Vicious after a Stinger Splash in 12.38
Rating *** 1/2
(Sting retained the WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE)
The Horsemen did try to help Sid dethrone Sting, but with Luger and the Steiners keeping them at bay, helping ensure a 1-on-1 match, Sting was able to survive another monster challenge from Sid Vicious.
Sid’s pure size and power kept him in control most of the match, but the heart of Sting could not be denied. He made a furious rally to help make it a successful title defense.
