Main Event - Two out of Three Falls - Bruno Sammartino vs Gorilla Monsoon - WWWF World Heavyweight Title Match [94]
In this epic encounter between Bruno Sammartino and Gorilla Monsoon, Bruno bursts straight out of the gate, running under a strike by Monsoon and scoring the first pinfall in 0:10 with a schoolboy pinfall. Infuriated, Gorilla Monsoon leads with wild strikes which Bruno reads clearly, dodging them with ease and returning strikes of his own. With Bruno shining, he continues to grapple Monsoon down to the mat and get the pinfall where Monsoon would time and again kick out before the two-count.
After ten minutes of Bruno shining during the opening of the match, Monsoon catches a right hand attempted by Bruno. Monsoon hoists Sammartino into the air and takes him on a ride with a minute long Airplane Spin. This rendered Sammartino dazed long enough for Monsoon to equal to score 1-1 after 11:24.
With Monsoon fully in-control, he decides not to make his objective to secure the win just yet, but to make Sammartino suffer with crushing backbreakers, intense suplexes and suffocating headlocks. For twenty minutes, the offence had been mainly from Gorilla Monsoon, with Bruno Sammartino's attacks having little effect on the 400 pound Manchurian. Gorilla Monsoon, finally deciding to try and get the win, picks Sammartino up over his shoulders and sends him for another Airplane Spin, followed by a Manchurian Slam. He goes for the pinfall but miraculously, Sammartino finds the strength to kick out at two. Monsoon then comes up with a Plan B and heads up to the top rope. He dives and aims to hit a splash on Bruno, but at the last second Sammartino manages to roll out of harms way.
Both men get to their knees, face-to-face, staring eachother dead in the eyes thinking what they can do to put eachother away. Bruno decides to chop the chest of Monsoon with Monsoon then repaying the favour. Both men begin to use eachothers chests like soundboards, with their viscous chops echoing throughout Madison Square Garden. Gorilla Monsoon gains the advantage as he continously attacks Bruno, chop after chop. This is until Bruno manages to catch one of Monsoon's skillet-like hands. Bruno pushes Monsoon's arms to the side and begins striking the face of his Monsoon, each strike draining the momentum away from the 6-foot-5 monster.
At ringside, Freddie Blassie can see Monsoon is becoming weak so he decides to lend a helping hand and rolls a steel chair into the ring. WWWF President, Buddy Rogers rises from his seat at ringside, turning Blassie towards him and floors him with a right hand. Rogers then grabs the legs of Blassie and proceeds to lock in the Figure-Four Leg Lock.
Back inside the ring, Bruno Sammartino and the referee, Dick Woehrle, are both distracted by the commotion outside of the ring. Gorilla Monsoon sees this oppurtunity, pushing the referee to the outside of the ring, and lining up the steel chair for an attack on Bruno. As Bruno turns around, he immediatley clocks Monsoon's attempted attack and ducks under the strike. This leads the chair to hit of the ropes and bounce back onto the skull of Gorilla Monsoon, allowing Sammartino to hoist Monsoon in the air and hit him with a running powerslam. Buddy Rogers inserts the referee back into the ring as Bruno goes for the pinfall - One...Two...Three! Bruno Sammartino retains his WWWF World Heavyweight Title after a hard fought battle lasting 45:06
