Bruno Sammartino refused a title opportunity to appear in a No Disqualification match against WWWF World Champion, Harley Race - should he win, he will finally get a fair title shot in a stipulation of his choosing. An enraged Bruno Sammartino starts the match of strong with a flurry of offence. With Harley Race struggling early on, he leaves the ring and begins to walk off, but Sammartino sees this and chases the WWWF World Champion. Race notices Bruno creeping behind and lands a huge right hand. The two men then begin to trade blows on the entrance way until someone from the crowd jumps the barricade and hits Bruno Sammartino with a chair. Once the man can be seen more clearly, it appears to be Freddie Blassie who was supposed to be absent tonight.
Harley Race's plan seems to be going to plan with himself and Freddie Blassie working over the challenger. The action spills to the announce table where Bruno's head is thumped several times. Sick of the two-on-one attack, Gorilla Monsoon helps out his good friend, Bruno Sammartino, by gripping Freddie Blassie and hoisting him up high, launching him in to the crowd.
With the match back to an even one-on-one, both men are back inside the ring. A drop toe hold from Harley Race sends Bruno Sammartino down to the ground. Race slows down the pace with a headlock keeping Sammartino grounded. Sammartino manages to get to a knee but Race switches to a bearhug into a German Suplex. With Race fully in control of the match, he goes to the outside and grabs a chair and charges at Sammartino but a boot catches the chair sending it crashing back into the face of the WWWF World Champion.
Harley Race, pouring with blood, finds a new aggression. He wipes the blood from his nose and marks an 'X' on the chair. Race lines the 'X' with the head of Bruno Sammartino and an all-mighty shot knocks Sammartino down to the ground. Freddie Blassie finds his way back in to the ring with a second chair, looking for a double chair attack on the ''Italian Superman''. As Sammartino gets back to his feet, both Harley Race and Freddie Blassie aim the chairs to the head of Bruno but as they attack, Sammartino ducks leading Race and Blassie to accidentally hit eachother. Bruno Sammartino capitalises on this, lifting Harley Race up and hitting a running powerslam - One...Two...Three! Bruno Sammartino survives the two-on-one and wins the match in 15:03, becoming the Number One Contender in the process.
