GameX Presents: WWF 1997
About This Diary: This is going to be a fairly realistic diary starting in January of 1997. For this Diary I will be taking the role of Good Ol' JR, Jim Ross. In real life, Jim Ross was in charge of hirings and management of the wrestlers in 1997. In this diary, I am going to imagine that his role was expanded and he was in charge of the creative as well. Before I begin, a couple of ground rules for how this will work.
As I mentioned, I am going to be playing this realistically. I am going to put myself in the shoes of Jim Ross and pretend it is 1997. That means...
As I am playing the game, I will of course give you details about the WWF but will also try to make up some fake, little stories, based on what is happening in WCW/ECW and any other major player that may show up. I will only do this when I see something interesting. With that said if you ever want to know what is happening with a certain wrestler, or in a certain company let me know! This will be mainly done through WrestleSource Magazine
Lastly, please be patient and supportive! This is the first time I have done a diary in over 10 years. I had a lot of time back then, but with a wife, two kids, full time job, etc. it may take me some time to post things. Thanks everyone! If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know.
Current Champions (As of February, Week 1, 1997):
WWF World Heavyweight: "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels
WWF Intercontinental: Hunter Hearst Helmsley
WWF World Tag Team: Owen Hart and British Bulldog
1997 Royal Rumble: Bret "The Hitman" Hart
Current Storylines:
*Ahmed Johnson vs Faarooq - In late 1996, upon his arrival to the WWF, Faarooq took out and injured Ahmed Johnson. As we enter the new year, will Ahmed Johnson get payback or will Faarooq and his new Nation of Domination continue to tear the WWF apart.
*Bret Hart vs Steve Austin - Throughout 1996, Steve Austin constantly taunted The Hitman while he was on hiatus from wrestling. When Bret did return to the WWF in late 1996 however his eye was not on "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, but rather on Shawn Michaels and the WWF World Title. Where will this feud go? Will Bret Hart still focus his energy on Michaels and the WWF Title or will all of the taunting from Austin finally get Bret to pay a little bit more attention to The Rattlesnake?
Crush vs Jesse James - After Crush experienced an embarrassing lost to Jesse James, Faarooq demands Crush to "Take care of Jesse James".
*Goldust vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley (IC Champion) - Hunter Hearst Helmsley is known to always have a woman or two around his arm but when he tried picking up Marlena, Goldust was not having it. How will this heated rivalry end? Will Goldust become a 2 time IC Champion or will Hunter and his new bodyguard Mabel, prevail.
*Paul Bearer vs The Undertaker - After years of service Paul Bearer turned his back on The Undertaker. Bearer ended up aligning himself with the psychotic Mankind and The Man They Call Vader. Will The Undertaker be victorious or is Bearer and his men too much for The Deadman?
Rocky Maivia vs The Sultan - After an upset victory on Shotgun Saturday Night, The Sultan and his managers, Bob Backlund and The Iron Sheik go over the 3rd generation superstar.
*Shawn Michael vs Sycho Sid (WWF Champion) - First it was all business as these two battled it out for the WWF World Title but when Sycho Sid attacked Michael's mentor Jose Lotherio at Survivor Series this feud became personal. Will Shawn Michaels become WWF World Champion once again or are Sycho Sid's head games too much for even The Heartbreak Kid to overcome?
Sunny Improves Phil LaFon and Doug Furnas - Sunny recognizes that Phil LaFon and Doug Furnas are one of the greatest tag teams in the world...however they are also incredibly boring. Can Sunny take them to the next level with her star power?
* = This feud was already started prior to starting the game.
As I mentioned, I am going to be playing this realistically. I am going to put myself in the shoes of Jim Ross and pretend it is 1997. That means...
- if a wrestler enters the wrestling world in 1999, don't expect me to hire them simply because they appear. I will only hire Indy wrestlers once they have had enough exposure that they would realistically get on the WWF's radar. That means I would expect them to have wrestled some indy shows before I consider hiring them. There is an exception to this rule though and that is based on relationships. For example, if a wrestler graduates from a well known wrestling school, is friends/family members with a well know wrestling personality, or accomplished something in real life outside of wrestling (MMA,NCAA,Olympics, etc.) I may take a look at them.
- I will also only give them names and gimmicks that WWF could realistically do. For example, if I hire someone over from WCW, I will most likely change their name since realistically WCW could own their name. Of course, wrestlers who I know own the rights to their names I will consider keeping. Also, if I have a positive relationship with the company I am hiring them from, I may keep their name and gimmick. So as long as ECW and WWF stay on good terms, there is a chance The Dudley Boys may appear under that name, Otherwise if I hired them, they would be repackaged.
- WrestleSource Magazine - So I want to report the news to the readers fairly often, however, in real life the internet wasn't really a main source of news for the time so I decided that I would create a fictional Magazine called WrestleSoure Magazine, which will release their latest edition every Saturday. This magazine will fill the reader in with what is happening backstage and major news from other promotions. In my head, I imagine this Magazine to be fairly large filled with information, results, etc., however for the sake of the diary, I will only report the information I feel is important. However, if there is anything you ever want to know, just ask and I will be more then happy to add it to the next edition of the magazine.
