It's that time one again! With NBC and TNT picking up the second half of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Season in July of 2002, the WCW Full Throttle Title is back!
The same rules from last year will apply this year. All title defenses on WCW Saturday Night (aside from the tournament final and any title defense that aren't a normal, non-stipulation singles match) will have a ten minute time limit, and once we reach the end of the NASCAR season, whoever holds the WCW Full Throttle Title will have the right to a WCW World Heavyweight Title shot any time between the end of the NASCAR season in 2002 and the end of June 2003. At least one week's notice must be given for the title shot as well, so again, this is NOT a Money In The Bank situation.
For this year's WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament, there will once again be twelve wrestlers involved, with the finals being a three-way elimination match.
The first eight spots were given to eight former WCW World Heavyweight Champions, who are:
- Booker T - Bret Hart - Chris Benoit - Chris Jericho - Goldberg - Kurt Angle - Mike Awesome - Rob Van Dam
Three other spots would be given to the WCW World Tag Team Champions and the WCW United States Champion. Since Rob Van Dam qualified based on being a former WCW World Heavyweight Champion, the third spot in this case would go to one of the other champions, chosen at random. The WCW International Title was picked via random draw to fill that third spot, so the three other champions getting in are:
- Eddie Guerrero [WCW International Champion] - Jeff Hardy [WCW World Tag Team Champion] - Raven [WCW United States Champion]
The twelfth and final spot would go to the winner of a Battle Royal on the July 6th edition of Saturday Night. William Regal would emerge victorious to earn that final spot in the tournament.
Here are the results of the first round matches from the July 11th Thunder:
1.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - First Round - Kurt Angle def. Booker T 2.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - First Round - WCW World Tag Team Champion Rob Van Dam def. WCW United States Champion Raven 3.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - First Round - Chris Benoit def. William Regal 4.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - First Round - Chris Jericho def. WCW World Tag Team Champion Jeff Hardy 5.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - First Round - WCW International Champion Eddie Guerrero def. Bret Hart 6.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - First Round - Goldberg def. Mike Awesome
Finally, here's the full card for the first Saturday Night At The Track of the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Season, taking place at Chicagoland Speedway on July 13th, 2002. Some non-tournament bouts would include a Six-Man Tag with Andrew Martin & The Hart Family against Diamond Dallas Page and The Dudley Boyz from The Flair Administration, Rey Mysterio vs. Ron "The Truth" Killings, and Amazing Red vs. Elix Skipper for the WCW Hardcore Title.
1.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - Semi-Finals - Goldberg def. WCW International Champion Eddie Guerrero 2.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - Semi-Finals - Kurt Angle def. WCW World Tag Team Champion Rob Van Dam 3.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - Semi-Finals - Chris Benoit def. Chris Jericho 4.) WCW Hardcore Title - Elix Skipper def. Amazing Red (c) 5.) Six-Man Tag - Andrew Martin & The Hart Family (Bret Hart & Owen Hart) def. The Flair Administration (Diamond Dallas Page & The Dudley Boyz) 6.) Rey Mysterio def. Ron "The Truth" Killings 7.) WCW Full Throttle Title Tournament - Finals - Three-Way Elimination Match - Kurt Angle def. Chris Benoit & GoldbergThere you have it! The first WCW Full Throttle Champion for 2002 is Kurt Angle. In the Finals itself, he and Benoit would team together to eliminate Goldberg (though Goldberg proved to be a force before he got eliminated). With that, it came down to Angle vs. Benoit, with Angle ultimately scoring the victory. Will he be able to replicate what Chris Jericho did in 2001, and hold the title for the remainder of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Season, or will we get one or more title changes? Stay tuned to find out.
Keep your eyes peeled for my post covering WCW No Surrender 2002, which should be coming before the end of February.

Part LVI: WCW No Surrender 2002
We're now into August of 2002, and there's A LOT to go over in this post. There's plenty of places that I could start, but I guess I'll kick things off with some talent news....more specifically, some talents that've departed WCW since the last PPV. There were a number of notable names who departed WCW and the end of 2001 when their contracts expired (Sabu and The Sandman, just to name a few), and that's the same case here in terms of the level of talents that are departing the company. To be clear, with the names that I'm about to go over, this wasn't a case of me firing them or releasing them from their contracts. All of their contracts were coming up at the end of July of 2002 and, to be completely honest, I didn't have any substantial plans for them going forward (at least, at the moment). The four talents that've left WCW are Andrew Martin, Curt Hennig, Scott Hall, and Ultimo Dragon. Now two of those names are certainly more significant than the other two, but regardless, these are four names who have been with WCW for a number of years. Obviously the biggest of the bunch was Scott Hall. The man who kicked off The Outsiders angle in 1996 that eventually evolved into the New World Order is now no longer a part of World Championship Wrestling. After the breakup of the n.W.o., I had kept him together with Kevin Nash, and they won the WCW World Tag Team Titles a few more times before Nash started to become more involved in singles programs. However, at this stage, I'm starting to shift my focus to different talents, and Scott Hall really isn't in any of my plans. The same can be said for Andrew Martin. By comparison, he is a fresher/younger talent, and I think he worked out for me much better than I anticipated (he always worked super-well with Bret Hart and played various different roles with stables like Team Canada and The Radicalz), though I'm at the point with him where I feel that it's time to move on. I didn't really have him figured into my plans, so it was time to move on. Curt Hennig and Ultimo Dragon were two guys that I never really used that much once I got into 2000 and beyond. I definitely used Ultimo more often, mainly for things like Best Of The Super Cruiserweights or putting him situations where he could have good matches with guys while losing. With Hennig, I just never really got into him. I'd use him occasionally, but he was never a guy that I was super excited to use.
I handled the departures of these four in different ways. With Ultimo Dragon, I just had him put some guys over on the way out (not really that much different to how I had been using him). When it came to Curt Hennig, I decided to give one last big match before he left, as he issued a challenge to Brock Lesnar for the WCW World Heavyweight Title on the July 29th Nitro (which Lesnar obviously won). For Andrew Martin and Scott Hall, I more involved in booking their departures, and made the decision to tie them into everything going on with The Flair Administration. After Andrew Martin and Booker T picked up a victory in a ten-man tag on the July 15th Nitro (they teamed with Kevin Nash and The Hart Family to defeat Awesome Giants, The Dudley Boyz, and David Flair from The Flair Administration), WCW President Ric Flair came out and declared that the two of them were obvious top contenders for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. He would grant them an opportunity to get a title shot against Brock Lesnar at the next PPV, No Surrender, but there was a catch....they would have to wrestle each other, and the loser would be fired. Flair added that they would both be fired if they didn't go through with the match. The two of them would have a hard-fought contest in the main event of the July 22nd Nitro, with Booker T emerging victorious. With the result meaning that Martin would be fired, the two would embrace before being attacked by Brock Lesnar. As for Scott Hall, he lost the WCW World Television Title to The Giant on the July 8th Nitro as the battles between The Outsiders and The Flair Administration raged on. This all led to a Steel Cage Match on the July 29th Nitro between Awesome Giants and The Outsiders, and after the former team won (thanks to outside interference), Kevin Nash was handcuffed to the cage and forced to watch as The Flair Administration destroyed Scott Hall. This basically served as Hall's write-off, and with that, he's no longer part of WCW.The above events would lead to big matches on both WCW television as well as the No Surrender PPV itself. As I already mentioned, Booker T won the right to challenge Brock Lesnar for the WCW World Heavyweight Title at the PPV. During the build, Lesnar and Bischoff would make things personal by going after Booker T's brother, Stevie Ray. This would lead to WCW Championship Committee member Dusty Rhodes adding a stipulation to their PPV main event. Both Eric Bischoff and Steve Ray would be at ringside, but to ensure that Bischoff wouldn't get involved, he'd be handcuffed to Steve Ray. As for Kevin Nash, he (along with other major WCW names like Sting and Goldberg) would continue to have issues with The Flair Administration. Nash would manage to get a measure of revenge over both Mike Awesome and The Giant. On the August 1st Thunder, interference from Nash led to The Giant losing the WCW World Television Title to Juventud Guerrera (who himself won a Three-Way #1 Contender's Match earlier in the night against fellow L.W.O. members Psychosis and Super Crazy after Flair forced them to fight each other for a title shot), and then on the August 5th Nitro, Nash would defeat Mike Awesome in a Las Vegas Sudden Death Match. This would all lead to a Six-Man Tag at No Surrender that would see Goldberg, Kevin Nash, and Sting go up against Ric Flair, Diamond Dallas Page, and The Giant, with the stipulation being that if the babyface side won, Sting would finally get what he's been chasing for months....a future one-on-one match with Ric Flair. As always, matches involving The Flair Administration are littered throughout the card. After a shaky start to the month of July, the build towards No Surrender has been very fruitful for the group. Not only did they rid WCW of Andrew Martin and Scott Hall, but they gained more championship gold. Billy Kidman won the WCW Cruiserweight Title from Rey Mysterio back at Bash At The Beach, and Chris Kanyon won the WCW United States Title from Raven on the August 8th Thunder. The PPV would see both of those feuds continue in different forms. Kanyon and Raven would do battle in a Ladder Match with the aforementioned WCW United States Title (figuratively and literally) up for grabs. As for Billy Kidman and Rey Mysterio, their situation was a bit more complicated. After Billy Kidman turned heel and joined The Flair Administration, Torrie Wilson was very much conflicted. She had been attached to Kidman for so many years, but also had been friends with Mysterio throughout the Filthy Animals run. This would lead to a WCW Cruiserweight Title bout on the July 25th Thunder where Torrie served as the Special Guest Referee. While she called the match straight down the middle for most of it, and just when it looked like Mysterio was on the verge of winning back the title, she kicked him in the balls, and busted out a fast count as Kidman rolled him up to retain the title. With that, Torrie Wilson turned heel, and also joined The Flair Administration in the process. This would all build towards another bout between Kidman and Mysterio at the PPV, but this time, it would be Falls Count Anywhere. Also on the No Surrender card is a Tag Team Elimination Tables Match between The Dudley Boyz and The Hart Family. This is yet another battle in the ongoing rivalry between these two. In addition to going at it in multi-person tags, they've continued to cost each other matches. Bret Hart and Owen Hart lost a match to Awesome Giants on the July 22nd Nitro after Bubba Ray and D-Von got involved, though The Hart Family would return the favor by helping Spike Dudley and Taz defeat The Dudley Boyz on the July 27th Saturday Night at Pocono Raceway. Following an Anything Goes Match on the August 10th Saturday Night at Watkins Glen where The Dudley Boyz got some revenge on the aforementioned Spike Dudley and Taz, they challenged The Hart Family to face them in their domain....a Tables Match. The Hart Family accepted, and the match was set.AJ Styles and Chris Jericho also continued to escalate their rivalry, as a championship became involved. On the July 20th Saturday Night at New Hampshire International Speedway, Styles won a Four-Way #1 Contender's Match against Amazing Red, Jerry Lynn, and Low Ki to earn a shot at NWA World Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino. On the July 22nd Nitro, Styles would defeat Corino to win the title, but was immediately on the receiving end of a Chris Jericho/Christian/Don Callis beatdown. Styles and Jericho would clash in a number of multi-person tags in the ensuing weeks (including on the July 29th Nitro where Chris Jericho, Christian, Gedo, & Jado defeated AJ Styles, Amazing Red, Jerry Lynn, & Jushin "Thunder" Liger), but their big showdown is at No Surrender, where the two will battle in a 2/3 Falls Match for the NWA World Heavyweight Title.A major bout on the PPV involving the WCW World Tag Team Titles came out of the battles over the WCW Full Throttle Title. As I mentioned in my previous post, Kurt Angle won the WCW Full Throttle Tournament at Chicagoland Speedway on July 13th to officially kick off the second season of Saturday Night At The Track. After coming off the inaugural season where Chris Jericho captured the title and never looked back, Angle looked to do the same. However, his efforts were stopped short just one week later at New Hampshire International Speedway, as Rob Van Dam defeated Kurt Angle to win the WCW Full Throttle Title! Following the bout, Angle refused to shake Van Dam's hand, and was visibly furious at the result. As Van Dam would go on to defend the title against Chris Kanyon in a Last Man Standing Match a week later at Pocono Raceway (closing the book on that rivalry), Angle began develop a closer relationship with Chris Benoit. This all culminated in a match on August 3rd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway where Van Dam would defend the WCW Full Throttle Title against Benoit. Late in the bout, after the referee had gotten knocked down, Angle would run in and hit Van Dam with the Angle Slam. Once the referee recovered, Chris Benoit took advantage and captured the WCW Full Throttle Title. With Jeff Hardy (Van Dam's WCW World Tag Team Championship partner) not in attendance, the two would put a beating on Van Dam. This would lead to a match on the August 5th Nitro where Kurt Angle would defeat Hardy. With that result, as well as Benoit's victory over Van Dam, that put the Angle/Benoit duo in prime contention for the WCW World Tag Team Titles, and the match would be set for the PPV. The defending WCW World Tag Team Champions would get a slight measure of revenge in an Eight-Man Tag on the August 12th Nitro (where they, along with AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn defeated Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, & Christian), but their bout on the PPV would easily be the biggest challenge of their relatively short title reign.Rounding out the No Surrender card are a series of multi-person matches. In a Three-Way Tag Team Match, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin from Team Lesnar will battle both Los Guerreros (Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero Jr.) as well as Rhino and Yoshihiro Tajiri. During the month of July, Eddie Guerrero successfully defended his WCW International Title against both Rhino and Tajiri, albeit with involvement from Chavo in both cases. Rhino and Tajiri would get a measure of revenge when they prevented interference from Chavo during an Eddie title defense against Edge on the July 29th Nitro, which led to Edge winning the title. While the duo of Rhino and Tajiri were having issues with Los Guerreros, Booker T asked them to be his partners in a Six-Man Tag against Team Lesnar on the August 12th Nitro. While Team Lesnar got the win, Benjamin and Haas were not too happy with the fact that Rhino and Tajiri almost beat them. So, during a match on the August 15th Thunder where Rhino and Tajiri battled Los Guerreros, the duo from Team Lesnar ran down and not only attacked Rhino and Tajiri, but Los Guerreros as well. That all led to the three-way tag on the PPV.Opening the card is a six-man tag with Edge and America's Most Wanted taking on The Triple X Prophecy trio of Christopher Daniels, Elix Skipper, and Low Ki. Daniels had begun to work his way back up the ranks, and he decided to approach Edge about joining the Triple X Prophecy. When Edge flat-out refused, that set into motion what followed. On the August 12th Nitro, Edge was set to defend his newly-won WCW International Title against Jun Akiyama from Pro Wrestling Noah. However, while making his entrance, Edge was jumped by the Triple X Prophecy. Edge insisted on going forward with the match, being the valiant babyface that he is. Despite putting up a good fight, he ultimately lost to Akiyama. Just a few days earlier on the August 8th Thunder, the group saw the opportunity to nip a rising tag team in the bud, and they took it, as their interference led to America's Most Wanted losing the NWA World Tag Team Titles back to Bryan Danielson and William Regal. With both of them sharing a common enemy, Edge and America's Most Wanted decided to team up, and they challenged Daniels, Skipper, and Low Ki to a match at the PPV. A pretty simple and straightforward build there. The only title change that's taken place that I haven't mentioned yet involved the WCW Hardcore Title. On the July 13th Saturday Night, Elix Skipper won the title from Amazing Red after interference from Sean O'Haire, who went on to officially join the Triple X Prophecy a short time later. O'Haire was furious with how he lost the WCW Hardcore Title a week or so prior, so this was him getting a measure of revenge on Amazing Red. With Christopher Daniels serving as his new guiding light, there's no telling how much more dangerous O'Haire could be going forward. With all of that finally out of the way, let's dive straight into the PPV!WCW No Surrender 2002August 18th, 2002 - Philips Arena - Atlanta, Georgia1.) Six-Man Tag - America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris & James Storm) & Edge def. The Triple X Prophecy (Christopher Daniels, WCW Hardcore Champion Elix Skipper, & Low Ki)2.) Three-Way Tag Team Match - World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) def. Los Guerreros (Eddie Guerrero & Chavo Guerrero Jr.) and Rhino & Yoshihiro Tajiri3.) WCW Cruiserweight Title - Falls Count Anywhere Match - Rey Mysterio def. Billy Kidman (with Torrie Wilson) (c)4.) Tag Team Elimination Tables Match - The Dudley Boyz def. The Hart Family (Bret Hart & Owen Hart)5.) WCW United States Title - Ladder Match - Chris Kanyon (c) def. Raven6.) WCW World Tag Team Titles - Kurt Angle & WCW Full Throttle Champion Chris Benoit def. Jeff Hardy & Rob Van Dam (c)7.) NWA World Heavyweight Title - 2/3 Falls Match - AJ Styles (c) [2] def. Chris Jericho [1]8.) Six-Man Tag - Goldberg, Kevin Nash, & Sting def. The Flair Administration (Ric Flair, Diamond Dallas Page, & The Giant)9.) WCW World Heavyweight Title - Brock Lesnar (with Eric Bischoff) (c) def. Booker T (with Stevie Ray)For No Surrender 2002, I got an overall score of 92%, which is up 3% from Bash At The Beach 2002. Five of the nine matches on this card wound up in the 90% range (which is great, obviously), but Match Of The Night Honors went to Jeff Hardy & Rob Van Dam vs. Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit for the WCW World Tag Team Titles, which earned a 96% score. Right behind it at 94% was the Tag Team Elimination Tables Match with The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hart Family. From there, three matches finishes tied at 90%. Those were AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho in a 2/3 Falls Match for the NWA World Heavyweight Title, Billy Kidman vs. Rey Mysterio in a Falls Count Anywhere Match for the WCW Cruiserweight Title, and the Three-Way Tag Team Match featuring Los Guerreros, Rhino and Yoshihiro Tajiri, and World's Greatest Tag Team. The remaining four matches were all in the upper half of the 80% range, which....for a PPV....is pretty freaking excellent. Brock Lesnar vs. Booker T for the WCW World Heavyweight Title finished with an 89% score, while Chris Kanyon vs. Raven in a Ladder Match for the WCW United States Title got a score of 88%. Finally, both of the Six-Man Tags finished with an 85% score.
On the whole, I thought this PPV turned out really well. All the matches that I expected to perform very well did just that. Out of the five title bouts, only two (the WCW World Tag Team Titles and the WCW Cruiserweight Title) changed hands. With regards to super notable news items coming out of the PPV, I only have two that I want to mention. First is that, after the conclusion of the NWA World Heavyweight Title 2/3 Falls Match that saw AJ Styles retain over Chris Jericho, Styles was on the receiving end of a beatdown at the hands of Jericho, Christian, and Don Callis. Amazing Red and Jerry Lynn tried to make the save, but to no avail. Second, in what was arguably the biggest news coming out of the PPV, Kevin Nash suffered a torn quad during his Six-Man Tag Team bout with Goldberg and Sting against The Flair Administration (this is the same injury that he suffered around this same time in OTL). A torn quad is a very serious injury, so it's safe to say that Kevin Nash will be on the shelf for quite some time. That's pretty much everything regarding No Surrender 2002! Be sure to tune in next time, as I go over all of the happenings from United We Stand, which will be WCW's September PPV title from here on out.

Pretty impressive in-game to get 9 matches, no lower than 85%!!!
I really like how you book your heels to just be ruthless with personal attacks on Hall (Nash) and (Stevie Ray) Booker.
The Flair Admin. just keeps growing but Sting is gonna get his match with Flair!
Love the chaos going on with the Full Throttle and Tag Team Titles. It's not a shock those 4 produced the best match of the night.
And I just had to laugh about Nash tearing his quad. Irony at its finest.

Figured I would take some to talk about the upcoming Crockett Cup Tournament. Of course, the Crockett Cup has become a big part of the WCW calendar since 2000, and that will continue again this year, with the tournament proper kicking off after United We Stand, and concluding at Halloween Havoc. This year's tournament is going to be MASSIVE. However, before we get to the Crockett Cup itself, I have to touch on the Play-In Tournament.
This year's Play-In Tournament will feature sixteen teams, with the finals being a Four-Way Elimination Match that will take place on the edition of Saturday Night At The Track the night before United We Stand. Before I list the full slate of teams, a brief overview on some of the more notable entries. First, Terry Funk and Tommy Dreamer have been pushed to the Play-In Tournament, mainly thanks to WCW President Ric Flair, who was punishing Dreamer and Funk after they had some run-ins with The Flair Administration earlier in the year (mainly when Ric was one-half of the WCW World Tag Team Champions with his son, David Flair). Second, we have a couple of new teams forming to fill the field. Black Tiger III found a tag team partner in Pat Tanaka (they actually teamed together in New Japan), while Fit Finlay has brought in Dave Taylor to team with him. Third, there will be a new team making their WCW debuts in this Play-In Tournament. A pair of brothers from Delaware, still not even over the age of twenty. Of course, I'm talking about Jay and Mark Briscoe.
Steve Corino will currently be listed as teaming with a partner TBA. He won't be teaming with CW Anderson this time around. Who will Corino team up with? I'll be getting into that in a future post (probably when I post the Play-In Tournament bracket).
Up next is a notable name making his WCW debut. With Bryan Danielson and William Regal already teaming up for the tournament, The Professionals needed someone to team with their other member, Lance Storm. Fortunately for them, Storm said that he was able to find someone that he had a history with to be his partner. That person wound up being none other than Chris Candido, who is now the newest member of The Professionals.
Finally, there will be a very fun return to WCW (and this is mainly inspired by one of the members of this team passing away recently). I decided to bring Ice Train back to WCW, and he'll be coming back together with Scott Norton to reform Fire & Ice!
So here's the full list of teams for the 2002 Crockett Cup Play-In Tournament:
- Bad Street Boys (Joey Matthews & Kristian York) - Black Tiger III & Pat Tanaka - Destruction Crew (Mike Enos & Wayne Bloom) - Fire & Ice (Ice Train & Scott Norton) - Fit Finlay & Dave Taylor - Jay & Mark Briscoe - Mike Sanders & Shawn Stasiak - Norman Smiley & Shark Boy - Steve Corino & TBA - Southern Comfort (Chris Hamrick & Tracy Smothers) - Terry Funk & Tommy Dreamer - The Armstrongs (Brad Armstrong & Steve Armstrong) - The Dancing Fools (Alex Wright & Disco Inferno) - The Professionals (Chris Candido & Lance Storm) - The Triple X Prophecy (Donovan Morgan & Michael Modest) - West Hollywood Blondes (Lenny Lane & Lodi)
