Of course, all of these matches take place under hardcore rules unless a specific stipulation or match type is noted. As always, there were a lot of titles switches with this one.

For context, this title is sharing the lineage with (what's listed in Wikipedia) as the WCW International World Heavyweight Title, so that is why Sting is listed below as having a third title reign.

Part LXI: WCW Mayhem 2003
Well look at that! We've made it to 2003! We're venturing further and further into unchartered territory here. There are a lot of places I can start with regards to the card for Mayhem, the first PPV of 2003. Given that Starrcade 2002 closed with a massive title change, I suppose I'll kick things off with the WCW World Heavyweight Title picture. As you all know, Owen Hart defeated WCW President Ric Flair at Starrcade in Montreal to capture the WCW World Heavyweight Title. His first major title defense would take place on the first Nitro of 2003 on January 6th, when he faced Flair again inside a Steel Cage. On the following Thunder, Bret Hart asked his brother Owen to come out to the ring, because he wanted him to be there for two things he wanted to announce. First, Bret declared that he would be retiring at the Spring Stampede PPV in April, which is set to take place in Calgary. With that out of the way, he said that with Owen as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, there was no better time to challenge him to one last singles match, with the gold on the line. While they had battled for a World Title in the past, that was when Bret was the champion, and when Owen was the challenger. Now, the roles would be reversed. Bret told Owen that he wanted their last singles match to be as special as possible, but noted that he was going to go all out to try and win the title from him. Owen was conflicted at first, but ultimately accepted the challenge, saying that it would be an honor to defend his title against his brother in their final singles match against each other. You would think that a World Title bout between two brothers would be a slam dunk to headline this PPV. However, there's another major title match that's taking that spot instead. Back at Starrcade, Goldberg won the WCW United States Title from Diamond Dallas Page in a Four-Way Match that also involved Booker T and Sting. Afterwards, Goldberg would talk about how winning the WCW United States Title was a full circle moment for him, as it was that title that helped to springboard him to the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Now that he had it again almost five years later, he wanted to have a proper run with it since he vacated it after winning the World Title in 1998. He wanted to help elevate the prestige of the title, but he couldn't do that until he put his issues with Diamond Dallas Page behind him. Goldberg and Page have had a rivalry that's lasted almost the entire time I've been doing this Extreme Warfare Revenge diary. It started as a friendly but competitive rivalry between two of WCW's biggest stars, but Page never being able to put Goldberg away in a one-on-one encounter eventually pushed him to the dark side, and it was that heel turn that allowed him to get that elusive victory. The two have had encounters on-and-off ever since, but at Mayhem 2003, their rivalry would finally come to an end. Page demanded a rematch for the title, and Goldberg agreed....on the condition that they face off in the infamous Triple Cage!! Who will come out on top as this rivalry between two of WCW's biggest stars finally comes to a close?Another massive title change that took place at Starrcade involved the WCW World Tag Team Titles, as Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero (collectively known as Los Guerreros) won the titles in TLC III, which also involved Edge and Rey Mysterio as well as Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. After a successful title defense against the aforementioned Edge and Rey Mysterio on the January 6th Nitro, Los Guerreros would quickly come face-to-face with their next challengers....Chris Jericho and Christian, who won a Four-Way #1 Contender's Match at Starrcade. Jericho and Christian had already drawn the ire of Eddie and Chavo on the December 30th Nitro, after they took the masks of Juventud Guerrera and Psychosis in a Mask vs. Hair New Year's Street Fight. The manner in which they won (they had assistance from Don Callis), and the fact that they kept gloating about it, eventually led to Eddie and Chavo accepting an offer to officially join the Latino World Order (the offer had been there for weeks, but Eddie and Chavo had been a little unsure about it). Can Eddie and Chavo avenge their stablemates at Mayhem, or can Jericho and Christian capture the titles? The result of TLC III would lead to a rift between Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. While they had been a team for the last several months, they were never exactly friends. That loss, combined with a few losses that followed at the start of the year (to AJ Styles and Amazing Red on the January 6th Nitro and to The Hart Family on January 13th Nitro), led to the team splitting, with Angle being the one to turn on Benoit. After the turn, Angle claimed that he had found new allies to back him up....and those allies happened to be Eric Bischoff, Charlie Haas, and Shelton Benjamin. The former Team Lesnar was now rechristened as Team Angle, and given that Bischoff was still dealing with an irate Brock Lesnar, that meant that Angle immediately got entangled in that issue as well (in addition to his own issues with Benoit). This would all build to an Eight-Man Tag at Mayhem, as Team Angle would align with The Giant (who also had Bischoff's backing) to take on the team of Brock Lesnar, Chris Benoit, Edge, and Rey Mysterio.
Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit weren't the only tag team that was going through a breakup. There was turmoil going on with The Professionals as well. Bryan Danielson and William Regal attempted to regain the NWA World Tag Team Titles from Spike Dudley and Taz on the December 28th Saturday Night, but were unsuccessful. More losses for the team led to a confrontation between Danielson and Regal on the January 13th Nitro. Danielson said that while he respected Regal as his mentor, the only way they could move forward is if they settled their issues in the ring. They agreed to face off in a singles match at Mayhem, with the result potentially determining the future of The Professionals as a stable. Can the student best the teacher, or will the teacher show the student that he still has much to learn? The Flair Administration faced a number of setbacks at the end of 2002. They lost WarGames at Fall Brawl 2002, and then lost a number of titles at Starrcade 2002. During a big meeting with the entire stable on the December 30th Nitro, 3 Live Kru were not happy with how things had been going lately, and quit the group on the spot. After they exited the ring, Ric Flair declared that they never needed 3 Live Kru, and made the decision that more fat needed to be trimmed from his Administration. He turned his attention to Billy Kidman and Torrie Wilson, and berated both of them before he had the rest of the group beat down Kidman (while forcing Torrie to watch). Kidman would come back with a vengeance a week later, as he helped fight off attempted interference from The Flair Administration during Ric Flair's Steel Cage Match with Owen Hart on the January 6th Nitro. Further run-ins involving Flair and Kidman would lead to an Eight-Person Tag at the PPV, where Flair would team with The Dudley Boyz and Stacy Keibler (who had switched from The Duchess of Dudleyville to Stacy Keibler several months back after she became Flair's secretary) against Billy Kidman, Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy, and Torrie Wilson. Two other titles matches filled out the PPV card. In a rematch from Starrcade, AJ Styles would defend the WCW World Television Title against Mike Awesome, only this time, they would do battle in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. Styles didn't waste any time after Starrcade proving that he was a fighting champion, as he quickly racked up a number of successful title defenses. Awesome declared that Styles got lucky at Starrcade, and that he would bring gold back to The Flair Administration by any means necessary. Can Styles defeat Awesome a second time, or can Awesome even things up between the two? The other title bout would see Low Ki defend the WCW Cruiserweight Title against former stablemate Christopher Daniels. After Daniels lost the title only eight days after winning it, he said he would make it his mission, and the mission of the Triple X Prophecy, to completely destroy Low Ki. After several run-ins throughout the course of January, the title match was set for Mayhem. Can Daniels win the title back, or will Low Ki's reign continue? The final bout on the PPV card would see Booker T and Sting team up to battle John Cena and Ron "The Truth" Killings. Following Starrcade, Cena started to have some backstage confrontations with Booker T, and this led to Cena attacking Booker T during his match with Ron "The Truth" Killings on the January 16th Thunder. Truth wasn't sure what to make of Cena's actions at first, but then decided to join Cena in the beatdown of Booker T. Eventually, Sting ran out to make the save, and tag team match was set up between the two sides for Mayhem. The build to the match would also include Cena and Truth putting together a rap that dissed their opponents. Before I get into the PPV results, I do have to make mention of a few title changes that took place since Starrcade. First, on the final Nitro of 2002 on December 30th, Kensuke Sasaki defeated Sting to capture the WCW International Title. Next are the NWA World Tag Team Titles, which changed hands twice during the month of January. On the January 11th Saturday Night, Little Guido and Tony Mamaluke from The FBI won the titles from Spike Dudley and Taz. Their title reign would only last a few weeks, however, as they lost the titles to Jushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask IV on the January 23rd Thunder. Finally, the last notable title change involved the NWA World Heavyweight Title. By virtue of winning the Starrcade Battle Royal, Chael Sonnen had earned the right to go after the title of his choice. He decided to go after the famed Ten Pounds Of Gold, and challenged Raven to a match on the aforementioned January 23rd Thunder. At one point during that match, the referee got knocked down, and this led to CM Punk coming down to the ring. People presumed he was going to go after Sonnen (who Punk has had issues with in the past). Instead, he took a steel chair and clocked Raven with it! After the referee recovered, Sonnen covered Raven to capture the Ten Pounds Of Gold. Afterwards, Punk continued the assault on Raven, and as he made his way up the ramp, he was greeted by a happy Steve Corino, who gave Punk a congratulatory handshake. So this serves as the official kickoff of the feud between CM Punk and Raven which (as I'm sure most of you know) was a very famous feud in the early days of Ring Of Honor in OTL.With all of that out of the way, let's dive right into the PPV!WCW Mayhem 2003January 26th, 2003 - St. Pete Times Forum - Tampa, Florida1.) Team Angle (Kurt Angle, Charlie Haas, & Shelton Benjamin with Eric Bischoff) & The Giant9.) WCW United States Title - Triple Cage Match - Goldberg (c) def. Diamond Dallas PageFor Mayhem 2003, I got an overall score of 87%, which is down 2% from Starrcade 2002. While that is a slight dip, it's still a very solid score to start out the year. The ratings for these matches were packed pretty tightly together (the highest ranked match and the lowest ranked match were only separated by around 8% or so), which I thought was fascinating. Match Of The Night honors went to Los Guerreros vs. Chris Jericho and Christian for the WCW World Tag Team Titles, which earned a score of 93% (no surprise that Jericho was in the Match Of The Night given his track record in this series). Not too far behind was Goldberg vs. Diamond Dallas Page in a Triple Cage Match for the WCW United States Title, which finished with a score of 90%. From there, the remaining seven matches on this card all finished in the high 80% range. The eight-man tag in the semi-main event slot got a score of 88%, while Bryan Danielson vs. William Regal wound up with a 87% score. A grand total of FOUR matches (Owen Hart vs. Bret Hart for the WCW World Heavyweight Title, AJ Styles vs. Mike Awesome in a Falls Count Anywhere Match for the WCW World Television Title, Booker T and Sting vs. John Cena and Ron "The Truth" Killings, and Low Ki vs. Christopher Daniels for the WCW Cruiserweight Title) all finished with a score of 86%. Finally, the Eight-Person Tag that was second on the card was the worst bout of the night with a score of 85%.I think I've gotten 2003 off to a good start with this PPV. I wasn't too surprised that Los Guerreros vs. Chris Jericho and Christian got Match Of The Night honors, but I was very happy with how Goldberg vs. Diamond Dallas Page did. As I said, that was a story that's been going on in some form or fashion since the first year of this diary, so it's truly the End Of An Era in a way. Other major happenings from this month included Brock Lesnar's continuing his babyface run, the formation of Team Angle, and the revelation that Bret Hart's retirement is imminent. How will the rest of 2003 continue to unfold? Find out next time when I go over Bound For Glory 2003!

Part LXII: WCW Bound For Glory 2003
We're in the month of February, which means it's time for Bound For Glory! It was a little tricky trying to schedule this show, as I didn't want to put it on the same date as major events that might be happening in Japan at the time (had to spend A LOT of time on cagematch to sort that out), but I ultimately settled on February 16th. Because of that, the turnaround between PPVs was pretty short, as Bound For Glory ended up being only three weeks after Mayhem. While it's not the main event, I'll start off with talking about the WCW World Heavyweight Title picture. Due to the quick turnout I just mentioned, I opted to go for a simple and straightforward title challenger for Owen Hart. Thus, on the January 27th Nitro (the day after Mayhem), I held a one-night tournament that would feature four singles matches, with the winners advancing to a Four-Way Match in the main event. In the qualifiers, Kurt Angle defeated Booker T, Rob Van Dam defeated Rey Mysterio, Sting defeated Jeff Hardy, and Edge defeated Chris Benoit. Then, in the Four-Way Match, Edge defeated Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, and Sting to become the #1 Contender. For the second straight PPV, it's a battle of Canadians for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Can Owen Hart pick up another successful title defense, or will Edge pick up his first World Title?Even though they did meet in any of the qualifying matches mentioned above, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit were still having issues with each other. Of course, they were the WCW World Tag Team Champions at one point in 2002, but things quickly dissolved between the two as the calendar turned from 2002 to 2003. Now, Kurt Angle is backed by both Eric Bischoff as well as Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin (aka World's Greatest Tag Team). After both lost out in the #1 Contender's Tournament, it was announced that the two would continue their rivalry in the form of a Dream Tag Team Match, as Chris Benoit would team with Kenta Kobashi to battle Kurt Angle and his partner....Mitsuharu Misawa. Of course, the timing of this match is no accident, as this tag team bout takes place just weeks before their VERY famous match on March 1st, 2003. The build to this would include Angle and Benoit wrestling to a time limit draw on the February 10th Nitro. Who will come out on top in this epic tag team encounter?Outside of Owen Hart vs. Edge for the WCW World Heavyweight Title, there were three other title bouts on this PPV. Chris Jericho and Christian would put their WCW World Tag Team Titles on the line in an international three-way tag team match against both the Latino World Order (represented by Juventud Guerrera and Psychosis) and the team of Jushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask IV. Jericho and Christian successfully defended their titles against Los Guerreros in a rematch from Mayhem on the February 3rd Nitro, but their issues with the LWO didn't end there as....one week later on the February 10th Nitro, Juventud and Psychosis beat the champions as part of a six-man tag that saw them team with Eddie Guerrero against Jericho, Christian, and John Cena. Meanwhile, Jushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask (who are also the NWA World Tag Team Champions) were originally set to challenge Jericho and Christian in a straight tag team match, but the result of the six-man tag led to the LWO getting added. Speaking of the LWO, Eddie Guerrero is part of a three-way for the WCW Hardcore Title on this card, along with John Cena and defending champion Hayabusa, who won the title from Cena on the February 6th Thunder. Cena and Guerrero have been having some issues over the last few weeks, so this bout is an extension of that. The final title bout on the card sees Sting challenge Kensuke Sasaki for the WCW International Title. Sasaki actually won the title from Sting back on the December 30th Nitro, and while it took some time for Sting to get back into the title picture, he finally got his chance at a rematch after winning a #1 Contender's Battle Royal on the February 8th edition of Saturday Night. Can Sting reclaim the title that Sasake took from him two months ago?Two Eight-Man Tags are also featured on the card. The first of those features of the continuation of the AJ Styles/Mike Awesome feud, while mixing in some Japanese stars. Styles would team with Booker T, WCW United States Champion Goldberg, and Masato Tanaka against the team of Mike Awesome, The Great Muta, and The Triple X Prophecy (represented by Christopher Daniels and Elix Skipper). As for the second eight-man, it's a battle between The Hart Family (led by Bret Hart, of course) and four men who have deep ties to the Michinoku Pro promotion in Japan in the form of Jinsei Shinzaki, Taka Michinoku, Sho Funaki, and The Great Sasuke. What's interesting about the Hart Family team is that it features a brand new member of the WCW roster....Harry Smith, the son of The British Bulldog. A few months shy of his eighteen birthday, Smith is the youngest member of the WCW roster, and he'll have the chance to make a big impression in his first PPV appearance.
Two matches on the PPV card left to discuss. Jeff Hardy and Rob Van Dam battle The Dudley Boyz in an Tag Team Elimination Tables Match. These two teams were part of an Eight-Person Tag back at Mayhem (as part of the ongoing feud between WCW and slowly crumbling Flair Administration), and while Bubba Ray and D-Von should always be considered the favorites in their signature match, you can never count out high-flying risk-takers like Jeff Hardy and RVD, who are willing to do some pretty crazy things to win a match. The final match to talk about is the continuation of Brock Lesnar's issues with Eric Bischoff, but not in the way you would expect. Would Bischoff send The Giant, Charlie Haas, or Shelton Benjamin after his former client, or would he do something outside the box? Bischoff would opt for the latter, and brought in none other than Bob Sapp, the man who had become a phenom in Japan thanks to his time in Pride and K-1. He had also dabbled in pro-wrestling, and now he was showing up in WCW (on behalf of Bischoff) to battle the Next Big Thing. Would will come out on top in this battle of behemoths?
In some of the other happenings in WCW, the feud between Ric Flair and Billy Kidman has heated up over the last few weeks, especially with Torrie Wilson (who was kicked out of The Flair Administration along with Kidman) and Stacy Keibler being involved as well. Kidman and Torrie would win a mixed tag over Flair and Keibler on the February 10th Nitro, and while that program wouldn't be featured on this PPV, it is still ongoing (for now). The biggest title news over the last few weeks involves the WCW Cruiserweight Title. While Low Ki had been the WCW Cruiserweight Champion since Starrcade 2002, his contract was actually set to expire at the end of January. The two sides reached an impasse on a new deal, and it was to the point that Low Ki refused to drop the title clean in the middle of the ring (if you know anything about Low Ki, he has garnered a reputation over the years in OTL). A rematch from Mayhem against Christopher Daniels on the January 30th Thunder ended in a No Contest with a major Triple X Prophecy beatdown of Low Ki. Thus, Low Ki exited the company on February 1st, and the WCW Cruiserweight Title was vacated. A single elimination tournament will decide the new champion, starting after Bound For Glory, and culminating with the Finals at the Uncensored PPV in March. I'll see if I can release the brackets for that in the next week or two. With all of that out of the way, let's dive straight into the PPV!WCW Bound For Glory 2003February 16th, 2003 - Cow Palace - San Francisco, California1.) Eight-Man Tag - The Hart Family (Bret Hart, Harry Smith, Teddy Hart, & TJ Wilson) def. Team Michinoku Pro (Jinsei Shinzaki, Taka Michinoku, Sho Funaki, & The Great Sasuke)2.) WCW Hardcore Title - Three-Way Match - Hayabusa (c) def. Eddie Guerrero & John Cena3.) Tag Team Elimination Tables Match - Jeff Hardy & Rob Van Dam def. The Dudley Boyz4.) WCW International Title - Sting def. Kensuke Sasaki (c)5.) WCW World Tag Team Titles - Juventud Guerrera & Psychosis def. Chris Jericho & Christian (with Don Callis) (c) and Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask IV6.) Bob Sapp vs. Brock Lesnar - No Contest7.) Eight-Man Tag - AJ Styles, Booker T, WCW United States Champion Goldberg, & Masato Tanaka vs. WCW World Television Champion Mike Awesome, The Great Muta, & The Triple X Prophecy (Christopher Daniels & Elix Skipper)8.) WCW World Heavyweight Title - Owen Hart (c) def. Edge9.) Dream Tag Team Match - Chris Benoit & Kenta Kobashi def. Kurt Angle & Mitsuharu MisawaFor Bound For Glory 2003, I got an overall score of 87%, which is the exact same score as Mayhem 2003 in January (always like strong consistency). In terms of Match Of The Night, this might be the biggest gap I've ever seen between the best match and the second-best match, as the Tag Team Elimination Tables Match scored an incredible 99%, while the Three-Way Tag Team Match for the WCW World Tag Team Titles earned a score of 89%. To have such a difference is really something. From there, a number of matches ended up in the 80% range. Both Bob Sapp vs. Brock Lesnar and the Three-Way for the WCW Hardcore Title got an 88% score, while the main event finished with a score of 86%. Owen Hart vs. Edge for the WCW World Heavyweight Title wound up with a score of 85%, and the Team Styles vs. Team Awesome Eight-Man Tag earned a score of 84%. From there, it's actually a pretty steep drop off to the final two matches. The opening eight-man tag got a score of 79%, and Kensuke Sasaki vs. Sting for the WCW International Title finished with a score of 65%.Aside from the one match that did end up on the lower end, I thought the show turned out pretty well. I was a little surprised that no other matches ended up above 90%, but the overall score was still really good, so I can't complain too much. Of the four title matches, two of theme saw titles change hands. Sting won back the WCW International Title, while Juventud Guerrera and Psychosis won the WCW World Tag Team Titles in a bit of an upset. While this would be a huge moment for two guys that've been a mainstay of the undercard for many years, their title reign would unfortunately be short-lived, as Chris Jericho and Christian would win back the titles the following night on Nitro in a Steel Cage Match. Bob Sapp vs. Brock Lesnar ended in a No Contest after the two got into an out-of-control brawl. While Sapp won't be back on WCW television in the immediate future (due to his commitments in Japan), this is definitely not the last you've seen of him in WCW, and it won't be the last time he battles Brock Lesnar. That's about all for Bound For Glory 2003! Tune in next time for Uncensored 2003, which will take place in the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey....just outside of New York City!

Not sure if I mentioned this in a previous post, so I'll take the time to talk about it now.
There's been some shakeups in the commentary teams for 2003. This will be Bobby "The Brain" Heenan's last year as a commentator before he retires. He'll only be commentating the PPVs this year with Tony Schiavone. The new commentary team for Nitro is Tony Schiavone and Taz, who isn't retired as an active wrestler yet, but he's defining winding his in-ring career down. The commentary team for Thunder will stay the same with Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko. Saturday Night also sees a bit of a shakeup, as the commentary team on that show going forward will be Kevin Kelly and Don Callis.
