Building a DynastyThe objective is straightforward: Rebuild.
In 1982, after a failed bid by an Ottawa-based ownership group intent on moving the Colorado Rockies to the Canadian capital, the franchise was sold to New Jersey shipping tycoon John McMullen. He announced that he had "big plans" for the franchise, but they involved making the long-awaited move to New Jersey. The team was relocated for the 1982–83 season and renamed the New Jersey Devils.
Starting with Colorado Rockies last season 1981/82, which means that several quantity for quality trades wasn't done and that the 1st round draft pick wasn't wasted on the bust Rocky Trottier.

The struggling Colorado Rockies finished last in 1981/82 which gave the promotion the number 1 draft pick in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. In the end of the season, the Rockies changed head coach and former Philadelphia Flyers legend Fred Shero was given the task to form the struggling team into a title contender. Fred Shero is known for his hard-hitting defence first mentality.
This means that the Rockies never did trade the star right winger Lanny McDonald to Calgary Flames and the bluechipper defenceman Rob Ramage to the St. Louis Blues.
The Colorado Rockies was a Mickey Mouse operation, but the general manager Lou Cipher traded away veterans and overrated players for talent and draft picks, so the future looks very promising for the Devils.

New Jersey Devils picks Jeff Brubaker from the Stanley Cup champions Montreal Canadiens. Brubaker is a 24-year old left winger from Hagerstown, Maryland. He will be a very useful agitator and grinder while we are in rebuilding mode.
