I’ve just been handed the keys to the World Wrestling Federation, the first booker installed under new owner Vincent K. McMahon. He bought the company from his father Vincent J. McMahon, who was more than ready to step away from the business. And man, was it ever evident …
The WWF is still operating like it’s the mid-1970s. The style is slow and deliberate. The talent is older and blander than much of the talent in other American territories. And the major stars are some of the major stars who were carrying the company nearly a decade ago. Nothing has changed.
Of course, the WWF still runs the Tri-State. Most of our events are run within the region, including monthly shows at Madison Square Garden in New York and the Spectrum in Philadelphia. We also operate shows once every few months in places like the Boston Garden, the Baltimore Civic Center, the Capital Centre in Washington D.C., Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, and Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. This allows us to maintain some presence in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and Ontario, Canada. And while our events make the most money, we also host two syndicated televised shows: Championship Wrestling and All-Star Wrestling. Both are filmed in small halls across the Tri-State.
But times are changing. Cable television is finally making its way into middle-class American homes, creating the opportunity for more and cheaper programming that could be broadcast across the country. This means a wrestling product could potentially become national if sustained. Considering the ruthless nature of our business, it’s possible that the old territory system may become a thing of the past very soon. I think Vince Jr. sees that as well.
Working with Vince Jr., I need to position the WWF so that it’s prepared for expansion, whenever that may come. But that’s a long way from now. A lot of work has to be done to the product first.
