Mid-South Wrestling 85: Universal Cowboy?
Mid-South Wrestling 85: Universal Cowboy?
Since 1979 in its current incarnation (but with roots dating back to 1953 with NWA Tri State) the Oklahoma-based company Mid-South Wrestling (MSW) has provided wrestling fans with some of the most consistent booking of grounded, gritty and intense professional wrestling action that can be found throughout all of the territories. As we move into 1985, MSW owner "Cowboy" Bill Watts is still reaping the rewards of his promotional efforts with a loyal fan base that still believes in his brand of professional wrestling. On face value to the regional fan base, it may look like 1985 is set to be business as usual for the established and dependable Mid-South Wrestling? Think again!
The aggressive winds of change are already well in motion within the wrestling world. Vince McMahon Jr. is making big moves out in New York, the game changing force of nature that is Hulkamania has arrived and there shall be no going back! Mid-South Wrestling has already felt the sting of McMahon's ruthless expansion efforts, losing top star The Junkyard Dog in August of 1984. With rumours running rampant within the industry that the McMahon led WWF is planning a closed circuit television PPV special that could be held as soon as March, it's clear that the train of WWF and its newly coined brand of "Sports Entertainment" is showing no signs of slowing down, it's only just starting to hit full speed.
Clearly aware of the looming McMahon threat, Some whispers from within the Bill Watts inner circle hint that the Oklahoma native may have some plans for expansion of his own. Set in his ways and darn proud of it, the stubborn "Cowboy" Bill Watts may not want to admit to having to embrace change, but Mid-South Wrestling will either have to adapt to the changing times or perish. Will Mid-South Wrestling live to go Universal? Time will tell!
