WCW 2001 just feels like my "home" after all the time I have sunk into it, so I am always excited to see someone else's take of it. There is so much meat on this bone that no two games of it can ever come out looking the exact same, and that's part of why I love it so much.
Jeff Jarrett - Not thinking you're going to rush right back into Booker/Steiner, Jarrett makes a good contender before you get there. Team Canada - One big surprise for the show, new Tag champs. Shane Helms - "Sugar" Shane was definitely on his way to the top in the Cruiser division at this time, so I like to see him continue that rise moving forward. Ric Flair - Unless Flair is heading to the WWF, Dusty loses this one and wanders off to run TCW. Filthy Animals Ernest Miller - Without knowing who is in the match, "The Cat" would be a nice face win for this. I was gonna say Goldberg, but I think you would probably save his return for the end of the show. Insiders - Not sure if you're into Lex and Buff or not at this point, I guess we shall see where you go with this.

- WCW: The Big Bang - Galen Center (Los Angeles, CA) SOLD OUT! (10,000 capacity) Commentary: Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay & Scott Hudson
The show begins with a video package that showcases some of the best moments in the history of WCW, with a few notable exceptions for released WCW talents. It cuts to black and a voice-over declares that tonight will be "the birth of the new WCW" and that birth will begin with a bang.
The show fades up to reveal a new silver and blue custom stage set made for the event. We get a second to take a good look at the set before the view is clouded by a spectacular display of pyro and explosions. The show cuts to a sweeping shot of cheering WCW fans in attendance, before sending us to commentary, where we are met with the familiar commentary team of Schiavone, Tenay & Hudson.
Tony hypes up the show, saying, "it's a night that you won't soon forget." - Opener -No 1. Contender's Match for the WCW World Tag Team Titles
Before the bell, the members of Totally Buffed had a disagreement with who should start the match with Buff insisting that he should be the one in the ring, which is shown to be a mistake as the well oiled machine of Nash & DDP are able to dominate over Bagwell and is only put to a stop when Luger is able to grab a sneaky tag and start to turn the tides. Luger was able to use his superior strength and size to overpower DDP and just when it looks like he's going to put him away, Buff demands that his partner tag him in. Luger protests and the two men get in a shouting match that is brought to an abrupt end after a Diamond Cutter from Page allows him to pin and win.
(11:37)Match Rating:***(63)Winners: The Insiders
- Post-Match - After The Insiders existed the ring, the action continued as Buff continued to berate his partner, leading to him bushing and even slapping Lex across the face. Lex attempted to leave the ring, but once again Bagwell poked the bear by spinning Luger around and for his troubles The Stuff was caught with a metal plated forearm to the face, firmly knocking him down for the count and allowing Lex to make his exit.Segment Rating:59 - Interview - Mean Gene is standing by with WCW World Heavyweight & US Champion, Booker T. Booker is asked about his status as he was injured in his last match on Nitro. Before he can answer, he is cut off by a face we haven't seen in a while, Johnny Ace. Ace informs Booker that because he can't defend his title due to injury, he is in violation of WCW's new policy on champions and will be forced to vacate his belts tonight. Booker, upset by this, threatens Ace, who tells him that he was just following Bischoff's orders. Booker then storms off to find Bischoff.Segment Rating:51
- Pre-Match -It's now time for the $10,000 Battle Royal. Almost all of the contestants are in the ring, all but one. Just as the suspense starts to build, we hear it.
"Oh My God!" Schiavone exclaims, "He isn't supposed to be back for months, but he's here!" It cuts to a shot of the ring and the scared expression on everyone's face. "It's him, It's got to be Goldber-"
"CUT THE F'N MUSIC!"
And just as we got our hopes up, they are once again sent crashing to the floor below as 'Franchise' Shane Douglas makes his way out onto the stage. Franchise berates the city of L.A., calling it a cesspool of drama school reject and drugged up jackasses looking for their next fix. Douglas ends his tirade by declaring that he will win this battle royal to show why he is "the goddamn Franchise."
Segment Rating:49
- Battle Royal - Winner receives $10,000Battle Royal starts out with everyone ganging up to beat down Douglas, but just turns into an absolute free-for-all, capping off the first elimination as Hugh Morrus is knock over and out by The Mamelukes. Douglas after taking one heck of a beating slides under the bottom rope and to the floor to catch a breather.
The next elimination comes as Norman Smiley is knocked out by Alex Wright & Disco Inferno. Afterwards, Alex and Disco go face to face, and it looks like things might get ugly, until they break out into an impromptu dance-off. Sadly, we don't get a winner as Rick Steiner double clotheslines both men out of the ring.
Bam Bam Bigelow finds himself across from Shawn Stasiak who had kept him from tattooing him on the last Nitro, so he goes and tries to eliminate him, but Stasiak is able to reverse a running attack from Bigelow and sends him flying out of the ring and to the floor below.
Jason Jett becomes the next man out as he is sent for an unexpected takeoff from the hands of Rick Steiner. Steiner then teams up with Kanyon to help eliminate Shawn Stasiak, but Kanyon wastes not time as he imminently turns on Steiner, sending him out of the ring with a big superkick.
Kanyon soon finds himself on the outside looking in as he is knocked out of the ring by The Cat and huge kick of his own. Kanyon complains on the outside while The Cat wipes his eyes and calls him a crybaby.
A temporary alliance is formed between The Cat, Dustin Rhodes & Jim Duggan as they try and fight off The Mamelukes, First goes Vito, then The Bull, but not before taking Duggan out with him. Dustin & The Cat battle it out in the ring with many close calls, but in the end Dustin is able to knock The Cat off the apron using one of his dad's classic moves, the Bionic Elbow.
It's all over Dustin Rhodes is the winner of this match, is what I'd like to say, but just like the snake he is Shane Douglas slithers into the ring and throws an unsuspecting Dustin Rhodes over the top and out to the floor to win the $10,000 cash prize. (17:34)Match Rating:**1/2(50) Winner: Shane Douglas
- Backstage -
Booker T is seen looking for Eric Bischoff's office and when he finds it, he busts the door open and demands to know what's going on. Eric tells Booker to calm down and that it isn't anything personal, just business. Booker threatens Eric, saying that he isn't someone to be messed with. Eric says the same thing, except that if Booker even lays a finger on him, his titles will be the last of his worries. Eric asks Booker for the titles one last time, Booker says "No way in hell!" then storms out of Eric's office. Bischoff sighs and grabs a radio on his desk asks security "return WCW's confiscated titles from 'Mr. Huffman' and to escort him out of the arena."Segment Rating:69
- Interview - Gene is standing by with Lex Luger, Gene tries to call him the 'Total Package' but Lex makes it clear that his name is Lex Luger. Gene asks Lex about his relationship with Buff Bagwell, but before Luger can respond, he is blindsided by Bagwell.
This leads to an all out brawl between these two men, ending with Bagwell getting sent through a craft services table. Luger shakes his head before walking away, leaving Buff in a crumpled heap.Segment Rating:53 - Mid-Card -WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles Match This match begun at a fast pace and never slowed down, a stable of what fans have come to expect from a cruiserweight match in WCW. There wasn't a dominant wrestler or team in this match, just a whole lot of flips and whole lot of action. The fun came to an end when Kid Romeo was the unlucky soul at the wrong time, as Kidman was able to nail him with a Shooting Star Press and cover him to keep a hold on the tag titles.(11:34)Match Rating:**1/2(57) Winners: Filthy Animals - Interview - Back with Gene once again. He is now with the 'American Dream' Dusty Rhodes. Dusty starts off by admonishing Shane Douglas, calling him a coward and a cheat and if he was a real man he would take on Dustin one-on-one. Dusty then turns his attention to Ric Flair, and he says that this has been a long time coming between him and Flair, and they go way back. Rhodes says that he thought Flair was a donkey's ass then, and ain't much changed since. The son of a plumber closes out his time on the mic by saying he's going to send Flair running off to his ivory tower because Dusty Rhodes is the heart and soul of WCW, and he ain't going nowhere.Segment Rating:52 - Mid-Card - No DQ: Loser Leaves WCW
The assault continues after the bell as Flair & Jarrett lay some more stomps into the belly of the American Dream. It looks like Jeff is trying to get Dusty up for another Stroke, but gets cut off by a recovered Dustin, who with the help of a chair is able to chase off the duo and tend to his father.Segment Rating:59
- Backstage - Gene is outside Eric Bischoff's Office and his is looking for answers. Gene says that Eric has refused to open up for the 10 minutes. Okerlund goes to knock on the door, but it opens.
Out walks Scott Steiner, who is soon followed out by Bischoff. Gene want's to know what Scott & Eric were doing, and Eric simply responds that they were doing business. Gene want's to know what kind of business, but Eric doesn't acknowledge the question. Eric does on the other hand announce that tonight's main event will now be for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and tomorrow night on Nitro there will be a Battle Royal to declare a new WCW US Champion.Segment Rating:48 - Mid-Card -WCW Cruiserweight Title Ladder MatchThis contest was a mostly fun back and forth contest, where Sugar Shane did most of the work, as it seemed as if Chavo wasn't on his A game. Despite that, the two men worked together quite well, but didn't really show anything we hadn't seen before, which is a little disappointing for a ladder match. The match ends when Helms is able to push Guerrero off the top of the ladder and grab the Cruiserweight Title.(13:15)Match Rating:**1/2(51) Winner: Shane Helms - Interview - Gene is once again looking from answers, couldn't get any from Eric now he tries with Scott Steiner. Scott says that he was raised to take a man at his word and not to got poking his nose where it doesn't belong, and he says that Gene should do the same. Gene ask if he doesn't then Scott says he'll show him why they call him 'Big Poppa Pump.' Scott then makes his exit by asking Gene to leave, so he can get ready for his match or in Scott's words "BEAT IT GENE!"Segment Rating:52
- Semi-Main - WCW World Tag Team Titles MatchThis match started out all O'Haire as he was able to keep pace with Storm and even getting the better of him on occasion. Quick moves by both of these men until they make their tags and the Hoss's go-to work. Awesome & Palumbo trade big blows and big power moves until the finish where Palumbo almost makes the tag but O'Haire is taken out by Storm and with no else to help, Chuck is out of commission after getting nailed with an Awesome Bomb for the victory and for Team Canada to become the new WCW World Tag Team Champions.(7:34)Match Rating:***(63) Winners: Team Canada - Video Package - A video package plays, similar to the one that started the show, except that it highlights the three men in this match. 'The Icon' Sting the defender of WCW, 'The Chosen One' Jeff Jarrett the opportunist of WCW and 'Big Poppa Pump' the freak of WCW. All in one match, right here, right now.Segment Rating:66 - Main Event -WCW World Heavyweight Title MatchThe match starts out with Jarrett & Steiner working as a team to take out Sting. This lasts all of 3 minutes when Jarrett attempts a pin, Steiner breaks it up and from there it's every man for themselves. Every man has almost hits their finish at least once, but Jarrett looks to have it won after nailing Steiner with The Stroke. Jeff pins, but Referee Nick Patrick is distracted by Dustin Rhodes, who has come down looking for further revenge. Jarrett gets up and has a verbal jousting match with Dustin that is cut short by a Scorpion Death Drop by the Stinger. The Icon doesn't waste his opportunity, placing Jarrett in the Scorpion Deathlock. With Jarrett left with nowhere to go in the center of this ring, his has no other option but to submit.(13:52)Match Rating:***1/2(75) - Celebration - After letting go of the hold, Sting falls to a knee, trying to catch his breath. The booming voice of Dave Penzer the sea of screaming fans "The winner of this match and new WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 'The Icon' Sting!" Sting looks up and sees the frowning mug of Nick Patrick as he handed him the World Title belt. The Icon returns to his feet and as his arm is raised by Patrick, a large pyro display goes off. Sting continues to celebrate his win as the commentary team closes out the show, reminding everyone to tune in tomorrow night for another night of WCW action on Nitro.
