Part I: The Setup
We know how WCW Starrcade 1997 ended. The match of the decade, remembered for the final few minutes of a politics-heavy finish. I won't go into detail because it triggers my PTSD on the matter. However, what if things were different? What if the main event to Starrcade 1997 was exactly what every wrestling fan was waiting for? What if Bret Hart actually was the final nail in Vince McMahon's coffin?
What if everything was different?
What if...

Part II: The Fallout
WCW Monday Nitro hits the air at 7:57pm on December 29, 1997
Tony Schiavone: Last night ladies and gentlemen, history was made! After 18 months, Sting returned to the ring, and Sting celebrated along with each and every WCW athlete, the return of the WCW World title. There is a new World Heavyweight Champion! He is Sting, with World Championship Wrestling!
Schiavone: Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you to Nitro! We welcome you to WCW Monday Nitro as you are looking live at a sold out Baltimore Arena, along the inner harbor in Baltimore, MD, as WCW Monday Nitro begins a brand new chapter1 We are heading into 1998 and what a 1997 it was! I'm Tony Schiavone, proud to be back at the desk for WCW Monday Nitro. 'Iron' Mike Tenay joins me...
Schiavone: It's Eric Bischoff! What is he doing out here to ruin this moment for WCW?!
Tenay: I don't know, Tony. For Eric Bischoff to come out here after the events of last night, is a bold move. And alone at that.
Eric Bischoff: I've swallowed my pride to come out here, still sore from Zbyszko and that traitor Bret Hart's actions last night. But it's important I come out here and I address something. Now, bear with me. I don't come out here as a member of the New World Order tonight. I come out here as the President of WCW to announce a victory. Because effective this morning, World Championship Wrestling has acquired the World Wrestling Federation!
Tenay: What did he just say, Tony?
Bischoff: That's right. The World Wrestling Federation is now under the direct control of WCW. And Vince, hey Vince. I'm sorry you weren't in the know about this, but when you have a board of directors and all of them but you agree to sell, your input isn't really needed.
Schiavone: I can't believe what I'm hearing...
Bischoff: So Vince, enjoy the last show you have control over. Oh, and by the way...see you next week.

WCW Monday Nitro Monday, Week 1, January 1998 A long, black limo pulls up outside of the arena. As the driver gets out and opens the back door, none other than former WWF CEO Vince McMahon steps out to a large amount of cheers from the crowd inside. McMahon walks to the door to enter, but security is there waiting for him to deny his entry. An irate McMahon goes off on both security members.
McMahon: Do you know who I am? I'm Vince McMahon, dammit!
Dean Malenko vs. Super Calo In a decent match, Dean Malenko defeated Super Calo in 8:23 by submission with a Texas Cloverleaf.
Ringside, we see a few individuals looking on with serious faces. While Schiavone does not identify these men, he comments they must be in attendance to watch the world-class athletes of the WCW Cruiserweight division.
At the bottom of the ramp is none other than Mean Gene Okerlund, standing by with Ric Flair! Flair says it's a milestone in the wrestling industry that the history and future of professional wrestling lie in the hands of World Championship Wrestling, and there are many wrestlers making their way down south that he'd love to wrestle. But before that happens, Flair says someone has already made their way to WCW, and that is Bret Hart. Flair ends the interview with a woo, leaving Mean Gene wondering if that was a challenge or what.
The Amazing French Canadians vs. The Steiner Brothers w/Ted DiBiase In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, The Steiner Brothers defeated The Amazing French Canadians in 5:49 when Rick Steiner pinned Pierre with a Steinerizer in a non-title match.
Goldberg vs. Bobby Walker In an extremely short match, Goldberg defeated Bobby Walker in 1:35 by pinfall with a Jackhammer.
A backstage camera runs through a corridor to find two security guards down and out next to an exit door to the arena. When Head of Security, Doug Dillinger opens the door to look around, but sees nothing.
WCW World Television Championship Hugh Morrus vs. Booker T (c) In a decent match, Booker T defeated Hugh Morrus in 9:41 by pinfall with an Axe Kick to retain the WCW World Television Championship.
Eric Bischoff comes out and makes a joke about Vince McMahon having troubles getting into the building. Bischoff talks about his humble beginnings in WCW as a third string announcer, and now, being the President of WCW and WWF. Bischoff tells the WWF talent not to worry, their spots are safe...in the unemployment line! As Bischoff looks to be done and is going to exit the ring, he stops, holding up his finger and says he has one more thing to say. Bischoff tells the WWF wrestlers they can come turn their belts over to him next week.
As Bischoff exits the ring and heads up the entrance, the New World Order in whole comes out, lead by Hollywood Hogan. There seems to be some sort of disagreement between Bischoff and the nWo, but cameras can’t pick up the conversation before everyone heads to the back.
Bret Hart vs. Curt Hennig w/Vincent In a bout that had great wrestling and good heat, Bret Hart defeated Curt Hennig in 8:49 by submission with a Sharpshooter.
Bret Hart is standing in the ring as Mean Gene Okerlund approaches, asking for his feedback on what we heard earlier. Hart says he doesn’t shy away from a challenge if that is what Flair is throwing his way. But before that can happen, Hart says that he has a match with someone who he upset at Starrcade, and that’s Scott Hall. Hart says he’ll see Hall this Thursday on Thunder.
Lex Luger vs. Hollywood Hogan In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, Hollywood Hogan defeated Lex Luger in 12:41 by pinfall with a Running Legdrop after interference from Kevin Nash went unnoticed.
After the match, Hogan and Nash continue to beat down Luger. Nash exits the ring and Hogan mocks Luger and talking trash into the ringside camera.
As Hogan steps away, out of nowhere WWF World Heavyweight Champion Shawn Michaels slides into the ring and connects with Sweet Chin Music, laying Hogan out! By time Kevin Nash knows what's going on and makes it into the ring, Michaels is already taking off through the crowd with Vince McMahon! How did they get into the building?!

WCW Thunder Thursday, Week 1, January 1998
The inaugural edition of WCW Thunder hits the TBS airwaves with Tony Schiavone recapping a monumental Starrcade and Monday Nitro; the defining moment in professional wrestling history.
The Faces of Fear w/Jimmy Hart vs. The Public Enemy In a match that had decent wrestling but little heat, The Faces of Fear defeated The Public Enemy in 7:52 when Meng submitted Rocco Rock with a Tongan Death Grip.
As the teams exit the ring and head to the back, cameras find WWF star Owen Hart sitting in the crowd.
Mean Gene Okerlund is standing in front of the stage with WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, Diamond Dallas Page. Okerlund informs DDP that he will be defending his newly won title tonight in a rematch from Starrcade, against Curt Hennig. DDP says the nWo has been trying to take him out for months, yet here he is United States Champion. DDP welcomes the rematch and says he's walking out still champion.
Buff Bagwell vs. Norman Smiley In a match that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Buff Bagwell defeated Norman Smiley in 5:42 by pinfall with a Buff Blockbuster.
Standing by again in front of the stage is Mean Gene Okerlund with member of the WCW Executive Committee, James J. Dillon. Dillon says that it's been a very chaotic beginning to 1998 and that he has a meeting with Eric Bischoff later tonight to discuss how he has been handling things, regarding the World Wrestling Federation stars. When Okerlund asks, Dillon confirms that the WWF talent is in fact under contract with World Championship Wrestling...for the time being. Before Okerlund is able to ask another question, Dillon cuts him off and says he'd love to bring more clarity to the matter after his meeting with Bischoff tonight and the Executive Team tomorrow morning in Atlanta.
Psychosis vs. Ultimo Dragon In a match that had decent wrestling and great high flying, Ultimo Dragon defeated Psychosis in 8:17 by pinfall with a Dragon Suplex in a non-title match.
Cameras find Raven's Flock walking through the crowd, minus Raven, as they disturb guests to get to their ringside seats as Raven's music hits the speakers.
Alex Wright vs. Raven In a match that had decent wrestling but little heat, Raven defeated Alex Wright in 10:26 by pinfall with an Evenflow DDT.
Backstage, cameras find Eric Bischoff and JJ Dillon having a heated discussion. When Bischoff sees the camera, he slams the door.
Backstage, Mean Gene Okerlund is standing by with nWo member Scott Hall. Hall says Bret Hart made a mistake by double-crossing the nWo and tonight, he's going to slap him around.
Bret Hart vs. Scott Hall In a match that had great wrestling and good heat, Bret Hart defeated Scott Hall in 14:19 by submission with a Sharpshooter.
After the match, Kevin Nash hits the ring to attack Bret Hart, but Hart is able to exit the ring before Nash gets to him. A frustrated Nash helps Hall up off the mat.
WCW United States Heavyweight Championship Curt Hennig vs. Diamond Dallas Page (c) In a championship match that had great wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Diamond Dallas Page defeated Curt Hennig in 13:11 by pinfall with a Diamond Cutter to retain the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship.
As DDP makes his way through the crowd to celebrate his win, his music is quickly replaced by sounds of a confrontation. Now on the screen appears to be a WCW cameraman being shoved out a door to the parking lot. In the parking lot, none other than WWF's Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels, and The Undertaker are standing by, with Steve Austin being shown as the one who dragged the cameraman outside. McMahon says that he didn't live and breathe sports entertainment to have his vision and dream destroyed by a C-string announcer. McMahon says he and his WWF superstars will be at Nitro on Monday, and he's putting the entire WCW roster on notice because there will be no handing over of championships.
McMahon looks over at The Undertaker and tells him to take care of him. As The Undertaker grabs the cameraman around the throat, the camera falls to the ground and all we see is pavement and two sets of feet. Suddenly, a set of feet disappear into the air and the cameraman's body drops in front of the camera.

WCW Monday Nitro Monday, Week 2, January 1998
Tony Schiavone: Last week, the unthinkable happened when WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels entered a WCW ring to attack Hollywood Hogan. What will WCW have to say about this and more importantly, how with the nWo react!
As the still frames from last week's WCW Monday Nitro fade, cameras fade in on WCW World Champion Sting, in the rafters looking down on the arena.
The Giant vs. Greg Valentine In an extremely short match, The Giant defeated Greg Valentine in 0:45 by pinfall with a Chokeslam.
Tony Schiavone: Fans, our debut episode of WCW Thunder on Thursday wrapped up with a disgusting attack against WCW personnel by WWF stars, lead by Vince McMahon. We have word that the camera man attacked by these thugs is doing okay and is at home recovering.
Eddy Guerrero vs. Mr. JL In a bout that had decent high flying action but little heat, Eddy Guerrero defeated Mr. JL in 10:16 by pinfall with a Frogsplash.
Mean Gene: Tony, I'm backstage waiting on JJ Dillon to provide an update soon regarding the Eric Bischoff situation and meeting with the WCW Executive Committee! I'm expecting to hear form Mr. Dillon soon!
The Armstrongs vs. The Outsiders In a decent match, The Outsiders defeated The Armstrongs in 6:13 when Scott Hall pinned Scott Armstrong with an Outsider's Edge.
Mean Gene: Everyone, I'd like to take a moment to welcome the Crippler, Chris Benoit! Chris, I wanted to talk to you for a minute about what lies next for Chris Benoit.
Chris Benoit: Gene, If I can...
Mean Gene: Wait just a second!
The camera pans over to Kidman from Raven's Flock climbing over the steel guardrail and walking up to Mean Gene and Benoit, looking around nervously.
Kidman: Ya know, Raven is tired of hearing about Chris Benoit. Everyone knows that you can't beat Raven. I mean...you can't beat me...
Benoit: No, you little twerp?! Maybe we should go settle this in the ring then!
As Benoit begins walking towards Kidman, Kidman backtracks, tripping over his feet and falling to the arena floor. Benoit picks him up and throws him into the ring, where a referee is waiting and rings the bell!
Chris Benoit vs. Kidman In a bout that had decent wrestling but little heat, Chris Benoit defeated Kidman in 2:50 when Kidman was disqualified when Raven ran in and attacked Chris Benoit.
As the bell rings, Raven's Flock hits the ring to support Raven's attack on Benoit. Benoit is beatdown with stomps, then Raven lays him out with an Evenflow DDT. With Benoit out in the ring, Kidman is helped to his feet, then slapped in the face by Raven. The Flock leaves the ring, with Kidman following, head hanging low holding his jaw.
Konnan vs. Davey Boy Smith In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Davey Boy Smith defeated Konnan in 5:41 by pinfall with a Running Powerslam.
Mean Gene: Ladies and gentlemen, I'm here with Executive Committee member J.J. Dillon. Mr. Dillon, please tell us the latest.
JJ Dillon: Yes, Gene. After meeting with members of the WCW Executive Committee Friday morning, it's come to our attention that Eric Bischoff has gone into business for himself. Surprising, right? While an offer was made and accepted for the World Wrestling Federation, Eric Bischoff is not the owner of the WWF, and the WCW Executive Committee is not only in control of WCW, but also the WWF.
Mean Gene: You mean to tell me that Bischoff is not in control?
Dillon: That is correct, Gene. You see...
From the entrance, Eric Bischoff storms out to confront Dillon.
Bischoff: JJ Dillon, what do you think you are doing? You can't come out here and do whatever you want. This is my company old man!
Dillon: Eric, you need to step in line, because the Executive Committee has made a decision, and that decision is in three weeks time, live on pay-per-view, we're going to host a historical event here in WCW.
Bischoff: What are you talking about? What event?
Dillon: A special event, when the WWF's Royal Rumble event comes to WCW!
Mean Gene: Oh my!
Bischoff: What?!
Dillon: During this event, the Royal Rumble match will include wrestlers from both WCW and WWF. Eric, if a WCW wrestler wins this match, you will have full control over what happens with the WWF wrestlers.
Bischoff: Haha, yes!
Dillon: But if someone from the WWF wins, Eric, then the WWF wrestlers will be given the same treatment as our WCW wrestlers, including Vince McMahon!
Mean Gene: Did you hear that Tony!
Bischoff: What?! This is my company, Dillon, you can't do this!
As Bischoff continues to yell and complain, Dillon walks to the back with Bischoff following him, clearly upset.
Barry Darsow vs. Curt Hennig In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Curt Hennig defeated Barry Darsow in 5:42 by pinfall with a Hennig Plex.
Backstage, cameras catch the New World Order arguing amongst themselves regarding Eric Bischoff and the situation with the WWF. Despite his best efforts, Hollywood Hogan is unable to calm everyone down, and motions to Randy Savage to leave. They have a tag team match next.
As we return from commercial, we see three well known WWF stars take seats ringside.
Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage vs. Lex Luger and Sting In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, Sting and Lex Luger defeated Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage in 13:32 when Sting pinned Randy Savage with a Scorpion Death Drop.
As the New World Order hit the ring to attack Luger and Sting, multiple WCW wrestlers come out and clear the ring. As the nWo retreats up the ramp, WCW World Champion Sting turns his attention to the WWF stars sitting ringside as he pridefully throws the WCW World title over his shoulder. The WWF stars get up and slowly walk away from their seats as Nitro comes to an end. -- Check out my site dedicated to this dynasty at Levinux Games!

WCW Thunder Thursday, Week 2, January 1998
WCW Thunder hits the airwaves with a quick recap narrated by Tony Schiavone regarding the disgusting attack by the WWF superstars on a WCW camera man last week.
The WCW World Television Champion comes down to the ring and confesses that he's excited for new competition and issues an open challenge for any WWF superstar who wants to come out and try to take his TV championship. Just as Booker T thinks no one is going to answer his challenge, a WWF superstar steps over the guardrail and into the ring.
WCW World Television Championship Ahmed Johnson vs. Booker T (c) In a decent match, Booker T defeated Ahmed Johnson in 10:01 by pinfall with an Axe Kick to retain the WCW World Television Championship.
After the match, Booker T quickly exits the ring, and celebrates with fans by the entrance aisle as members of the Nation of Domination stable are seen ringside helping Johnson out through the crowd.
Mean Gene Okerlund is standing by with JJ Dillon of the WCW Executive Committee. Dillon announces that tonight, we'll see a WWF star in action to qualify for the Royal Rumble match.
Suddenly, Eric Bischoff comes storming out yelling 'No way!' as he walks down the ramp. Bischoff tells Dillon that he has no desire to book a WWF superstar in the ring. When Dillon advises he has no choice, Bischoff changes his tone and says that's fine. WWF can send someone like Scott Taylor into the ring and he'll send whoever wants to come out for an easy match. Bischoff waves to the back for anyone to come out, and former WCW World Television Champion Rick Martel comes out. By the look on Bischoff's face, it wasn't his first or second choice, but Martel is now in the ring ready to go.
Then, Vince McMahon comes walking out. Bischoff is losing his mind. McMahon appeals to Dillon that since it's one of his superstars with a chance, he should be able to pick who. Dillon gives it a thought, looks at Bischoff with a somewhat disappointed look, and agrees. Vince quickly waves to the stage side as we see none other than Vader walk out. Eric Bischoff is pale.
Royal Rumble Qualifying Match Rick Martel vs. Vader In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Vader defeated Rick Martel in 8:27 by pinfall with a Vader Bomb.
Buff Bagwell puts on his top hat, and talks himself up in the mirror; he's in action next.
Brad Armstrong vs. Buff Bagwell In a bout that had decent wrestling but non-existent crowd heat, Buff Bagwell defeated Brad Armstrong in 6:30 by pinfall with a Buff Blockbuster.
After the match, Buff Bagwell grabs a microphone and says it's time for Buff Daddy to take the next step, then warns Diamond Dallas Page that he's coming for the United States Championship.
Kidman vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr In a bout that had decent wrestling but non-existent crowd heat, Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Kidman in 10:23 by pinfall with a Springboard Hurricanrana.
As we return from a commercial break, Tony Schiavone narrates a video clip from the end of WCW Monday Nitro, where Sting and Lex Luger defeated Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage.
The Faces of Fear w/Jimmy Hart vs. High Voltage In a bout that had decent wrestling but non-existent crowd heat, The Faces of Fear defeated High Voltage in 7:40 when Meng pinned Kenny Kaos following a Double Big Boot.
WWF's Disciples of Apocalypse are shown in the upper deck looking at WCW's tag team action.
Goldberg vs. Dave Taylor In an extremely short match, Goldberg defeated Dave Taylor in 3:52 by pinfall with a Jackhammer.
After the match, Goldberg taunts the crowd, then yells something into the ringside camera before exiting the ring. Tony Schiavone says he couldn't understand what Goldberg said. Bobby Heenan responded by telling Schiavone that's because he doesn't speak muscle head.
Cameras catch the nWo backstage. Continued problems as an argument seems to be happening before we see The Outsiders walk out of the dressing room on Hogan and Savage, while Eric Bischoff stands between them, unsure of what to do.
Backstage, Mean Gene is standing by with Arn Anderson and Ric Flair. Arn says that it's interesting, where things are heading and that he's expecting nothing to change here at WCW. Flair, who looks like he drank 5 too many Espressos, calls out Curt Hennig for stabbing him in the back and ending the Four Horsemen. Flair reminds Hennig not to forget, because he doesn't.
Ric Flair vs. Curt Hennig w/Vincent In a bout that had great wrestling and good heat, Curt Hennig defeated Ric Flair in 12:22 by pinfall with a Hennig Plex following Steve Austin's attack on Arn Anderson, dropping him with a Stone Cold Stunner, causing a distraction for Ric Flair.
As Flair realizes what has happened, he throws a fit in the ring, yelling for Austin as he goes to the outside to check on Arn Anderson, who is still down and being helped by WCW officials.

WCW Monday Nitro Monday, Week 3, January 1998
As WCW Monday Nitro fades onto TV screens, we see two black limousines pull up to the building. As the doors open, it's clear that the New World Order has arrived at the arena. Cracking jokes and insults as they walk, cameras fade to the crowd and fireworks to welcome everyone to WCW Monday Nitro, followed by the nWo theme as the New World Order in full come down to the ring.
Hollywood Hogan talks to the crowd, addressing the shift in the company and his desire to have his World title back. Hogan turns his attention to the "new outsiders" that have disrupted things within the company, including a kick to the chin a few weeks ago. Hogan says that the New World Order is still on top of the world and it's just a matter of time before these new guys figure it out. Hogan then turns to Eric Bischoff and says that without Bischoff there wouldn't be a New World Order. Suddenly, Kevin Nash leans in towards Hogan, and says without Bischoff, these guys from New York wouldn't be here. The comment immediately has Bischoff on the defensive, and a small argument starts. Several members of the nWo leave the ring as the argument ends and everyone returns to the back.
Disco Inferno vs. Raven w/Lodi In a bout that had decent wrestling but little heat, Raven defeated Disco Inferno in 6:29 by pinfall with an Evenflow DDT.
A quick video package is shown as Tony Schiavone recaps what happened at the end of WCW Thunder last week, when Steve Austin attacked Arn Anderson, costing Ric Flair his match with Curt Hennig.
Jerry Flynn vs. Steve McMichael In a bout that had decent wrestling but non-existent crowd heat, Steve McMichael defeated Jerry Flynn in 6:13 by pinfall with a Mongo Spike.
After Mongo's victory, cameras find Vince McMahon with Patt Patterson and Gerald Brisco, seemingly impressed with Mongo's match.
Mean Gene is standing by with the WCW United States Champion, Diamond Dallas Page. Gene asks DDP about comments made by Buff Bagwell on Thunder last week. DDP says he welcomes all comers, including those from the nWo, so if Buff has the stuff, he'll see him in the ring at the Royal Rumble.
Disorderly Conduct vs. Mortis & Wrath w/James Vendenberg In a bout that had decent wrestling but non-existent crowd heat, Mortis & Wrath defeated Disorderly Conduct in 3:35 when Wrath pinned Mean Mike with a Death Penalty.
WCW World Television Champion Booker T comes to the ring and issues yet another open challenge for his TV championship. Out from the back comes his challenger...
WCW World Television Championship The Sultan vs. Booker T (c) In a decent match, Booker T defeated The Sultan in 7:44 by pinfall with an Axe Kick to retain the WCW World Television title.
Following Booker T's victory, cameras spot WWF's Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Chyna sitting in the crowd, observing Booker T's match.
Eddy Guerrero vs. Prince Iaukea In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Eddie Guerrero defeated Prince Iaukea in 7:38 by pinfall with a Frogsplash.
Mean Gene is backstage as he hypes the upcoming WCW pay per view, Royal Rumble. Gene reminds fans that if a WCW wrestler wins, then Eric Bischoff has full control over the WWF talent. But if a WWF star wins, then Bischoff has no say.
Royal Rumble Qualifying Match Droz vs. Curt Hennig w/Rick Rude In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Curt Hennig defeated Droz in 10:29 by pinfall with a Hennig Plex.
Mean Gene is back with another announcement. At the Royal Rumble, WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting will defend his title in a rematch with Hollywood Hogan!
Alex Wright vs. Ric Flair In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Ric Flair defeated Alex Wright in 13:17 by submission with a Figure Four Leglock.
After the match, Ric Flair helps up a surprised Alex Wright. Some words are said to Wright before he and Flair shake hands.
Mean Gene, who has clearly gotten in his 10,000 steps today, is in the ring with Ric Flair. Flair says last week, Austin crossed a line and he's coming for him. But before that, he and the Hitman have a date with destiny. Wooo!
WCW World Tag Team Championship Scott Norton & Randy Savage w/Elizabeth vs. Steiner Brothers w/Ted DiBiase In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, The Steiner Brothers defeated Randy Savage and Scott Norton in 9:59 when Rick Steiner pinned Scott Norton with a Diving Bulldog to retain the WCW World Tag Team titles.
As the Steiners and DiBiase slip to the back, Scott Norton and Randy Savage start arguing in the ring over the match's outcome. Savage shoves Norton and Norton shoves back, sending Savage to the mat. By the time Savage is back on his feet, the nWo is in the ring to break things up and calm them down. Savage looks like someone kicked his dog. Suddenly, Hollywood Hogan comes out and looks like he's going to head to the ring, but stops at the top of the ramp. He looks disgusted by what is going on in the ring, and turns around and storms out to end the show.
