WINNER CHOOSES STIPULATION
KEVIN VON ERICH vs TERRY GORDY
The announcers remind us that these matches are really important, as the winners get the choose the fate of the next Freebirds vs. von Erichs title match. Kevin and Gordy go at it since the beginning, there is no stall and Kevin quickly jumps on the giant with kicks and knees, trying to take him down! Gordy has problems hanging with Kevin, until he kicks him with a big boot and takes advantage of it. At the end, Michael Hayes is seen at ringside and he's chased by David von Erich! The referee turns to make sure they are gone and Gordy kicks Kevin low! Powerbomb by Gordy! 1... 2... 3! The first round goes to the Freebirds! (75) (15:09)
Postmatch Gordy joins Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin, who are through the crowd, and they celebrate saying it's one down and two to go! (79)
BUDDY ROBERTS vs DUTCH MANTELL
Exactly while the Freebirds are leaving, Roberts is in the ring and dares them to come back, but of course they don't. Cornette is interested in this match, as he's friends with Mantell and assures that he means business. Indeed, Dirty Dutch doesn't hold back against Roberts, but he stalls a bit here and there to get his wind back. Roberts is tired of it and follows him, so they brawl at ringside! The referee can't control them, like on the past TV shows, and calls a double DQ! (62) (9:26)
Postmatch Roberts and Mantell keep fighting and Roberts is bleeding! Security holds them apart and Mantell leaves, while Roberts kicks all that is surrounds him! (75)
WCCW TAG TITLES MATCH
THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (c) (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs THE FANTASTICS vs THE ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS
Cornette says this is unfair as it's a 4vs2, but JR points out that only one team can win the belts and his prediction is correct, because very soon R&R and Fantastics start arguing and this helps MNX keeping control of a few segments of the match. Fantastics never tag in R&R unless they have to so they can be the legal men, but this gets them tired even if Gibson and Morton clean the ring more often. After they dive on Condrey, Eaton hits Fulton with a DDT and pins him to retain the titles! (81) (11:23)
On stage Bill Mercer interviews Ric Flair and Ted DiBiase, who applaud MNX and the champions join them. Flair says that all the titles are with them as usual, now they just have to win the main event and protect the gold. Mercer asks about Devastation Inc., but the Horsemen leave! (85)
WINNER CHOOSES STIPULATION
KERRY VON ERICH vs JIMMY GARVIN
JR says that Kerry, the younger brother, now has a lot of pressure on him as Kevin lost. Cornette, however, says that he's facing Garvin, the least experienced Freebird. Garvin fights almost like he's a defending champion, focusing on not getting beaten and using restholds to stop Kerry's momentum, but the crowd loudly chants for Kerry. Michael Hayes shows up again, from the other side of the crowd, but this time both David and Kevin are there and so he backs up! Garvin seems worried because the plan has failed and Kerry applies the claw on him! Garvin fights, but falls to the floor and taps out! (76) (14:50)
Postmatch the von Erichs celebrate. Kerry tells David that he's done his part, unlike Kevin, so he better not screw this up. It's a bit tense, so Fritz stops this and announces that no interferences will be allowed during Hayes vs. David, so the best man will win and whoever interferes will get suspended! (83)
CHRIS ADAMS vs TOMMY RICH
JR is upset because Adams got brainwashed and ruined his friendship with Rich, they are a two time Tag Team Champions and threw it all away. Adams has new gear and is super arrogant, he dares Rich to fight him and then uses a lot of shortcuts because his opponent is bigger than him. Rich holds his ground... but Mr. X runs towards the ring! Security stops him and prevents him from reaching the ring, but he manages to throw a scissor to Adams! Adams grabs the scissor and hits Rich in the head, then hides it in his tights! 1... 2... 3! (62) (12:24)
In ring The East Coast Rednecks await to find out who's the partner for Tito Santana and Brian Adias... and it's Junkyard Dog! (71)
THE EAST COAST REDNECKS (w/ Sherri) vs TITO SANTANA, BRIAN ADIAS & JUNKYARD DOG (w/ Sunshine)
JYD is quite over with the crowd and this infuriates Irwin! Santana still has his shoulder and arm taped, he gets in the ring only at times and it's for the best, because Mangum eventually manages to beat him up and isolate him, dishing a lot of punishment to his rival! Santana finally gives JYD a hot tag though! Both Santana and Adias hit a tope to the outside and Irwin and JYD are by themselves! JYD hits the thump on Irwin for the victory! (62) (10:03)
On stage Bill Mercer interviews Stan Hansen, Bruiser Brody and the Funks. Terry says that the Horsemen and Devastation Inc. better beware of them, they are 4 bad m'fers with nothing to lose! They are not afraid to bleed and suffer, but tonight they will make sure that their opponents definitely will! (74)
WINNER PICKS STIPULATION
DAVID VON ERICH vs MICHAEL HAYES
JR is a big fan of Fritz's decision to prevent any interference in this match, given what happened earlier in the night. David seems rusty at times, but he still performs really well and Hayes gets upset about it. The two brawl all over the place and then go back to the ring, with David now dominating the match. David uses the claw on Hayes, who seems ready to tap out... but Hayes pushes the referee and David, still applying the hold, falls with his neck on top of the turnbuckle steel that Hayes previously exposed! Hayes falls on top of David while the claw is still on! 1... 2... 3! Somehow, Hayes has done it! (85) (16:42)
Postmatch David is disappointed and doesn't even know what happened. Hayes goes away celebrating, despite the pain, while Kevin goes to the ring to check on David and an angry Kerry stares from the aisle! (82)
RIC FLAIR, TED DIBIASE, KING KONG BUNDY & DICK MURDOCH (w/ Bobby Heenan and Skandor Akbar) vs STAN HANSEN, TERRY FUNK, DORY FUNK JR & BRUISER BRODY
JR spends a couple of minutes talking about the alliance between Horsemen and Devastation Inc., Hansen pinning Flair before getting disqualified last month, Terry messing with Bundy and Murdoch, DiBiase and Dory feuding for the Texas Title etc. The babyfaces seem on form and showcase their skills, until Terry gets hit by a Bundy splash and then isolated in the heels' corner! On a couple of occasions, the babyfaces have to save Terry from a few pinfall attempts and Flair likes to tease his opponents adding insult to injury! Funk finally gives Hansen the hot tag and all hell breaks loose! They fight everywhere and the referee can't control everything! DiBiase gets the black glove, but Dory Jr. slaps him, like DiBiase did to him 2 weeks ago! Flair was waiting for the glove, but he sees Hansen coming and hides behind Bundy... lariat! Hansen covers Bundy! 1... 2... 3!!! (93) (15:23)
Postmatch the babyfaces celebrate, while Flair is upset at DiBiase for not giving him the glove and Akbar yells at Flair for putting Bundy in a predicament! Hansen, once again, points at the World Title! (85)
Show notes
- This went extremely well! 89 is my best quality rating ever and morale is at an all time high backstage! Also, I finally drew 60000+ fans in attendance, as I got close to it many times and it was getting a bit frustrating
- 0.72 buyrate means 362.966 buys precisely. I didn't have an initial target, but I think it went quite well. I get 30% of the gross PPV revenue, as the rest goes to Cablevision (and Uncle Sam lol)
- Apparently, the show raised our popularity pretty much everywhere except Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Quebec as there were "limited viewers". As I am not over enough in those areas, it's safe to say that not a lot of people ordered the PPV there. Mexico doesn't count, as they are still lucky to get the show on free TV for now (24908 people watched it)
- The main event was my MOTY, with a stunning 93. I wasn't sure about how long the match should have been, as people like Bundy and Brody have low stamina, but they were wisely protected and the crowd also helped with a great support. Flair, Terry and DiBiase were all praised publicly for being pretty much perfect
- Hayes/David was pretty great too and would have been the match of the night pretty much everywhere else. The von Erich drama continues, I think the finish was pretty clever, especially after the no run in rule getting enforced. I hope you liked it
- On the other side, Gordy and Kevin underdelivered and the match was a bit flat. Apparently the crowd was too hyped from the opening video and didn't react well to them building up the pace. Quite weird
- A minor incident happened in the other match of the series, as I originally wanted Kerry to lose to Garvin and keep the neutral Kevin as the only winner of the three. However, Kerry was absolutely furious about my decision. I would normally run the match like it is, if we want Garvin to become a star then he needs to be booked strongly. Kerry was fine with losing with a DQ and after dominating the match, so I decided to switch the result instead of ruining the match. I'm quite disappointed with Kerry though, but I have to say that him being the only winner (when he's the most impatient brother) actually makes some sense?
- Speaking of disappointment, of course Rich was off during his match against Adams, despite this being a good chance for him to perform in, you know, the first PPV ever in the history of wrestling. I can't wait to wrap up the feud and get rid of him
- I was really impressed with how good the Tag Titles match was, the teams busted their butts and the result was just beautiful. Fulton was the weak link as usual, but he didn't affect the match that much
- Roberts and Mantell had a decent match, that was also maybe ruined by the finish. It's curious to note that their promos and brawls were more appreciated than the contest itself
- JYD got a great pop for his debut, he's really over in the area as he was the hottest act in MSW. He's definitely not the best wrestling around, but his gimmick works and fans love him. I also needed a match to advance Magnum/Santana towards their next chapter, so this worked decently I guess
