Shifting Sands, Episode 1
Prologue:
The idea of this has been done many of times. I’ve read countless ‘stories’ on various boards in the same likeness, though never really seen one take off. It took me a good while to figure out which Mod I’d use to start this – and, in my opinion, Mammoth’s “Shifting Sands” mod is better than any other out there [no disrespect to any other modmakers – the work you guys do is remarkable]. I also quite enjoyed WWE back in 2006.
The concept is simple: Take the first ‘big’ event and reverse the results. On RAW, we are starting at New Year’s Revolution. A simple idea provides a much different landscape: Edge isn’t WWE champion at the end of the show, instead holds the IC strap. As Kurt Angle was the first man eliminated from the chamber in real life, in this alternate reality he walks out as champion; Mickie James wins the Women’s title, and the rest is kind of filler.
I’ll go back to Armageddon 2005 to kick start the Smackdown stuff, shifting the event to the final week of December (as per TEW calendar). This will be found in post number 2. I’ve edited the Mod to be as I would expect it to be, and now have the task of re-creating history heading into what was a decent Wrestlemania 22 in real life.
I have been playing TEW for about 4/5 years now and have a lot of fun with it. The idea of writing regularly seems somewhat daunting, but I make so many notes and write-ups when I play in general so why not post it for others to enjoy. I’d like to think you would anyway.
Thanks.
The top Superstars of Monday Night RAW rolled into The Pepsi Arena in Albany, New York for the first pay-per-view of 2006, with the focus primarily on the star-studded main event. John Cena would put his coveted WWE Championship on the line against five of the top competitors in the world. To make matters worse, they’d be locked inside The Elimination Chamber. Fans flocked in by the numbers – over 11,000 to be precise – in anticipation; would we finally see somebody end the reign of Cena? Before that though, we had a lot of filler to get through.
Up first, Edge – who still had possession of the Money in the Bank briefcase which guarantees him a world championship match when he sees fit – would challenge 56-year-old Ric Flair for the Intercontinental Championship. ‘The Nature Boy’ has held the gold since September 2005, when he pinned Carlito at Unforgiven. Since, he’s overcome every obstacle thrown at him and provided fans with a somewhat enjoyable reign. Edge provided a real threat here though, which was evident is his domination of the sixteen-time world champ. The ending saw shenanigans in which the referee was knocked down, Lita handed her boyfriend the briefcase and Edge used it so bust open Flair. While the ref came back around, Edge had his opponent primed and ready. He connected with his signature “spear” and got the three-count to be crowned Intercontinental Champion for the sixth time.
Mickie James has been obsessed with Trish Stratus since her debut on the main roster. In recent weeks, James had kissed her idol and complimented her body after catching her in the shower. She rolled into Albany knowing that she was inside Trish’s head, despite the champion’s claims that she was 100% focused on retaining the gold. During the relatively short match, James slowly showed signs of turning full-blown heel. Trish hit a Chick Kick, but James managed to escape under the bottom rope and avoid the pin. Trish was determined to keep the momentum up and headed towards the ropes. With the ref’s vision blinded, James had picked up a high-heel shoe from the outside and used it to hit Trish in the eye! The champion screamed out in pain, but James quickly capitalised by sneaking into the ring and pinning Trish somewhat seductively to secure the three and take the Women’s Championship!
Match number three pitted a legend in Jerry Lawler against the brash and cocky Gregory Helms. This had been building over several weeks and provided Helms with the opportunity to prove he was more than a “comic book hero”. In a decent bout, Helms showed he’s more than capable of being one of the top guys, showcasing his wrestling ability and keeping ‘the King’ protected throughout. In the end, Helms hit a shining wizard to get the victory. Good win.
Triple H broke The Big Show’s hand a couple of weeks before this event. To his disgust, HHH soon found out that Show could use the cast as a weapon. They met here at New Year’s Revolution to determine who was the better man and told a good story throughout. Hunter would remove the cast and continuously work on the injured hand, taking the risk of the chokeslam out of the equation. However, the sheer size of Show proved costly – Hunter simply couldn’t hook the arms to hit the pedigree. At the third attempt, Show countered and used his strong hand [duh] to plant his opponent with the Chokeslam and ultimately pick up the W.
As we slowly, and finally, approached the main event there was time to fit in a match that nobody really wanted to see. Shelton Benjamin had been on a huge losing streak, something which introduced us to Momma Benjamin on the most recent edition of RAW. With his momma at his side, Shelton rolled into the Pepsi Arena with a huge task at hand; one on one with Viscera. This was a short one and provided nothing spectacular – the story coming out of it was that Momma Benjamin proved to be nothing more than a distraction for her son, as Big Vis used his size to overpower the former IC Champion, hitting a big splash at 06:21 to get the win. Post-match, Shelton was furious and left without his Momma.
Time for one more quick filler match before the star-studded main event. Candice Michelle won a bra-and-panties gauntlet match.
In the main event, Shawn Michaels entered first – as he discovered on RAW a few nights previous after the announcement from Vince McMahon. We got five minutes of him against Kurt Angle which the fans loved, until John Cena entered the mix. As time went on, the remaining entrants entered – Chris Masters, Carlito and Kane. The first elimination came at around 18 minutes in when Kane, who’d dominated since leaving his pod, fell victim to five finishing moves – Sweet Chin Music, an Angle Slam, a Backstabber, the Masterlock and finally an FU proved enough to remove the biggest threat from the match. Cena’s elimination quickly followed – getting hit with the superkick from Michaels! The fans in attendance loved this, leaping from their seats in anticipation of seeing a new champion crowned. Masters and Carlito teamed up with Angle in a three-on-one against HBK. Both quickly learned not to trust anybody inside the chamber though. Carlito hit a backstabber to Masters to get the three count on him, immediately followed by an Angle slam on Caribbean Cool himself. This left the two men who started this thing to end it. A series of counters excited the fans, who were chanting Michaels’ name. Though, just short of the 35-minute point, Angle countered and wriggled around the body of his long-time rival to lock in the ankle lock. Michaels fought valiantly, but the pain proved too much. He tapped in the middle of the ring and Angle had officially been crowned the new WWE champion!
