1894/95 Division 1 - Week 29
Middlesbrough Ironopolis vs. Bootle
Bootle become the first team unable to win consecutive titles and they have consistently been stuck just short of the top spot. They have nothing but pride left to play for as the head out to Paradise Ground in Yorkshire to take on Middlesbrough Ironopolis who have been a fairly average team this season. Unsurprisingly, it was the Bucks that took the win in this match, looking the better side and scoring in both the 32nd and 88th minutes to take both points.
Walsall Town Swifts vs. Everton
Two teams facing off with very different fortunes this season as Walsall take on Everton. While on paper this match looks one side, both teams still have something to gain as Everton need at least a point if they hope to overtake Wolves and gain an easier playoff match, while Walsall have Preston hot on their tail for a top 3 spot and will want a win to stay ahead. It's a rough day for the Walsall fans at West Bromwich Road as despite being the better side and having plenty of good chances, the goal never comes and the side are forced to accept a goalless draw.
Sheffield United vs. Preston North End
Another match between a side in the relegation battle against a team fighting for the top 3 spots. An important match for both sides as a win could move Preston into 3rd place, while for the home side a win at Bramall Lane would see them gain a gap over Wolves and almost seal the theoretically easiest play-off match. The winner goes to the move deserving side as in a match that really has little to write about, an 80th minute goal for the Blades sees them beat Preston and look set for a 14th place finish.
Blackburn Rovers vs. Birmingham St George's
Blackburn have sealed the title last week and so for them this will be the first match post-celebrations as they welcome the Dragons to Ewood Park. For the fans that came for the celebrations, they were also treated to a cracking game of football too. St George's score very quickly in the 5th minute to take the lead only for Blackburn to come back and score in the 13th to tie things up 1-1. Blackburn look the better side for the remainder of the half but are unable to find the goal and head into half-time dead even. With the second half underway, the Dragons would score the next goal in the 58th minute to take the lead and a second in the 77th. A consolation goal in the 85th minute was not enough to stop Blackburn suffering their third defeat of the season as BSG take the 2 points.
West Bromwich Albion vs. The Wednesday
A very mid-table clash between two sides who have been decent this season, not much I can say to hype up this match at Stoney Lane. One side absolutely dominates this match as Wednesday control the match completely, but only score once in the 19th minute to leaves the home fans miserable.
Aston Villa vs. Sunderland Albion
Aston Villa have been quite disappointing this season and despite a much better second half of the season, they remain in 7th place in the table. In what should be a good match they welcome a solid side in Sunderland Albion who are in the top 5 and look strong. It was not as exciting as many would have hoped, although the home side looked good and their were plenty of chances, Villa took a deserved win with a goal in the 80th minute.
Darwen vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers
A big match for Wolves as it will determine whether they will compete with Sheffield United or Everton on the final day for a more favourable match-up in the play-offs. The side heads out to Barley Bank to take on a Darwen side who following a strong second half of the season managed to pull away from the relegation battle into early safety. Wolves take the lead in the first half with a goal in the 23rd minute but coming into the second half Darwen have changed things up and the difference is clear with goals in the 61st, 68th and 79th minutes ending Wolves hopes of picking up any points.
Derby County vs. Liverpool
Liverpool have been a decent side this season as they head out to Derby Cricket Ground to face a Derby County side that have finished the season on miserable form. This will actually be the league fixture at the DCG, as plans are in place for Derby County to move to Baseball Ground from next season. Liverpool start off the better side scoring in the 32nd minute and leading into half time. A second goal in the 62nd minute makes things look comfortable until a 76th minute goal gives Derby County a chance and a second goal on the edge of full-time means the two teams will split the points.
Week 29 Tables
Frustratingly my leagues table has lost all image quality on the team badges for no clear reason (and across the whole account too). I've managed to remaking on a different google account but frustratingly I'll have to probably works out a new way to keep track of these table when I want nicer graphics.
