1894/95 Division 2 - Final Week
Accrington vs. Rossendale
Two sides with little left to fight for than pride as despite a very good start, Accrington have managed to choke both promotion and being the drawingest team. To make matters worse, an inside source is reporting that Accrington blew their budget aiming for promotion and could be in financial trouble heading into the up-coming season. Rossendale meanwhile will be looking for a good showing at Thorneyholme Road as they hope to survive the re-election process and remain in Division 2 for next season. The home side are the better team in this match, scoring in the 8th minute and making it 2 on the edge of half-time. No Stag party today as a third goal in the 68th minute makes Accrington the winners.
Crewe Alexandra vs. Newton Heath
An important match for both sides at Alexandra Recreation Ground as Crewe need a win if they hope to secure the final play-off spot, while Newton Heath need just a single point to become the champions of the second division. Newton Heath score early, with a goal in the 11th minute but Crewe put up a good fight trying to claim the win. The same pattern continues in the second half, as Newton Heath look the better side but neither can find any more goals and Newton Heath walk away with the win and become the third ever Division 2 Champions, while Crewe will face another year in Division 2.
Grimsby Town vs. Bolton Wanderers
Grimsby Town started out the season very strong and looked to be favourites for the title throughout the first half of this season, but form taking a dive has seen the side fall out of playoff contention. Tonight they end the season by welcoming Bolton Wanderers to Abbey Park. An early goal in the 8th minute for Grimsby sees them go ahead in what becomes a fairly even affair between the two sides. No more goals come in the match however and Grimsby end their season on a win.
Burslem Port Vale vs. Notts County
3 seasons in the Football League, 3 finishes at the bottom of the table, Burslem Port Vale will face re-election for the second year in a row. Tonight though they have potentially their last Football League match as they take on Notts County who after looking surprisingly good all season were unable to keep up the pace needed and are out of play-off contention. This match had plenty of good chances, with Notts County scoring first in the 8th minute. Just over 10 minutes later though Port Vale would score the equaliser and the teams would be equal heading into half-time. One final goal was scored in the second half and it was a familiar sight for Port Vale fans as their team suffered their 20th defeat of the season and 62nd since joining the Football League 3 years ago.
Northwich Victoria vs. Blackpool
This will be the Vics final Football League match as they have officially announced their withdrawal from next season, welcoming Blackpool out to Drill Field to see out their campaign. Blackpool would open scoring in this match early with a goal in the 11th minute and hold the lead until half time. As the second half gets underway, Northwich are getting more competitive, leading to a goal in the 58th minute to make things even. It would be late heartbreak however as Blackpool would score in the 86th to end the Vics season and show themselves as the best side facing re-election.
Nottingham Forest vs. Sunderland AFC
If Sunderland win at Town Ground tonight, Nottingham Forest will have successfully achieved a perfect 10 season. Not a lot else to be said about these two. Forest had a decent debut campaign, stuck firmly in the middle of teams, while Sunderland have been disappointing following their relegation as their defense is atrocious, but have not looked as being a likely side to face re-election. Somehow, despite avoiding draws like the plague throughout much of the season, with Nottingham Forest 1-0 up, a late goal by Sunderland leaves the match without a winner and the perfect 10 season still waiting to be achieved. Sunderland will end the team with a positive goal difference and the most goals scored in 11th place.
Newcastle United vs. Woolwich Arsenal
Woolwich Arsenal's chance of winning the title have already ended but their opponents Newcastle will be looking a score a point to confirm a play-off match against fellow Northern League alumni Sheffield United in the play-offs. A loss for Newcastle here at St. James' Park could see them get jumped by Burnley. Newcastle push hard in this match, but it is Arsenal who score first, taking the lead in the 16th minute. A second goal in the game comes in the second half as Newcastle pull back a draw in the 58th minute, which will be enough to put them into the playoffs.
Loughborough Athletic vs. Burnley
Loughborough have the chance to break their own record for most draws in this match as they take on a Burnley side who could finish anywhere from 4th to 8th depending on the outcome of this match at Athletic Ground. Just one goal scored in this game as Burnley find themselves one point off a play-off match while Loughborough are forced to settle for just 12 draws this season.
