1895/96 Division 1 - Week 18
Newton Heath vs. Middlesbrough Ironopolis
Two sides that are having very opposite seasons as Division 2 champions Newton Heath have continued their momentum to sit as one of the top sides in Div. 1. Ironopolis meanwhile have been constantly battling to avoid face the relegation playoffs at the end of this season as they currently sit only 2 points clear. Both sides would score in the first half, with Newton Heath getting the first in the 14th minute while Ironpolis equalised in the 41st. In the second half one more goal would see the better side win as Newton Heath score in the 59th to take the win.
Walsall Town Swifts vs. Woolwich Arsenal
5 points separate these two sides and while Arsenal are closer to the relegation battle, while Walsall are solidly in the top half this match is much harder to predict due to Walsall's habit of being a bit of a Robin Hood club, winning against better sides just to lose to worse ones. Walsall showed no mercy in this match however as Arsenal will be wishing they could have just skipped the trip to the Midlands. Walsall scored in the 13th, 39th and 89th minutes with plenty more chances throughout the match as they convincingly took the points.
Preston North End vs. Liverpool
For Preston this is undoubtedly their worst season so far, with the original league champions well off the pace of the title battle and only managing to stay a single level ahead of the relegation battle. Their opponents this week are a side who will be much happier with their performance as Liverpool show themselves as likely a fixture of this level of football for the near future. Despite the two sides being equal on points, there was a vast gap in quality in this match as Preston would completely shut down Liverpool and not allowing them any chances while also scoring in the 8th minute, 32nd minute, 77th minute and the 88th minute to take a resounding 4-0 win.
West Bromwich Albion vs. Darwen
After spending a season looking to potentially be facing the relegation playoffs, Darwen have massively stepped up as they sit 4th in the table at the start of the week (now in 6th with the current results). Their opponents West Brom have spent this whole season so far fighting to stay out of the playoff spots in what looks to be one of the toughest battles we have seen in Division One. West Brom would take the lead in the first half, with a goal in the 34th minute. This lead would be held through half-time until the 70th minute where Darwen would score an equaliser. Sadly though, the better side would win, as West Brom would score an 86th minute winner to take both points which moves them out of the playoff spots.
Aston Villa vs. Sheffield United
This match looks like one of the most one-sided match this week as last-placed Sheffield United take on 3x Champions Aston Villa at Wellington Road. Unsurprisingly Aston Villa dominated this match, scoring in the 38th and 79th minutes to leave the Blades at the bottom of the table.
The Wednesday vs. Sunderland Albion
Sunderland Albion this season are not having their best season ever as they look a potential candidate for the playoffs, but they are looking on track to potentially break the record for the most draws in a season as they take on The Wednesday who have kept themselves squarely in the middle of the table throughout the course of this season so far. The Wednesday go all out and are definitely the better side scoring in the 8th minute. Albion would equalise in the 22nd but 2 more goals in the 40th and 67th minutes confirm the win for Wednesday.
Derby County vs. Blackburn Rovers
The reigning champions have not been having a good season so far, with their next match being a chance to potentially get some points and help move them back up the table as a title fight in starting to look like it is not on the cards for this season. Derby meanwhile are fighting for survival as they currently sit just above the playoffs and will be looking to keep themselves from falling into the bottom 2 spots. Goal in the 32nd and 73rd minutes for Blackburn would see them get a deserved win and move back into the top half of the table, while Derby hover just about the playoffs.
Birmingham St George's vs. Bootle
It is hard not to back Bootle in this match as the side have only really dropped points in a few draws this season, with just the one loss in 17 matches so far. St George's meanwhile have been good enough to mostly keep themselves away from the relegation battle, although they have found themselves getting draw in on multiple occasions due to the competitiveness of the bottom sides. The Bucks have got to be the favourites in this one and win they did with a single goal in the 61st minute see them walk away with another two points and end the week on top.
