1895/96 Division 2 - Week 18
Bit of a busy day for me, so no match screenshots sorry
Notts County vs. Accrington
Things have not been going well recently for Notts County. After looking last season like they had finally managed to avoid being sucked in the re-election battle and even pushing for promotion. They missed out on the playoffs however and have really struggled to make too much of an impact this season. Accrington meanwhile are looking at a solidly mid season this year, nowhere near the playoff chase but well clear of the re-election zone too. Accrington looked the better side and eventually the inevitable happened as they scored in the 65th minute to take the lead. 11 minutes later a second would go in, but this time is was Notts County scoring, allowing them to split the points and give Accrington their 8th draw of the season.
1 - 1
Fairfield vs. Grimsby Town
Both sides in the middle of the table in a match that could easily go either way. Fairfield sit top half, although with one of the worst goal differences in the league, while Grimsby are two points behind them and cruising, clear of the re-election battle currently. Fairfield's leaky defense and a lack of clinical finishing cost them as while they were in the match, Grimsby were the better side and managed to put 3 past them in the 14th, 35th and 56th minutes.
0 - 3
Crewe Alexandra vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers
One of the biggest matches of this week, a result here for Crewe could help push Wolves out of playoff contention and put them in a better position to potentially get promoted. For Wolves meanwhile a win could massively open up the field. A match where it is hard to call a winner, but there is definitely one side I would prefer to see win. That did not happen however as Crewe were clearly the better side and managed to score earlier in the 23rd minute in what would end up being the only goal of the match.
1 - 0
Leicester Fosse vs. Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest will be looking for any points here as they take on a Leicester side that have settled well into the Division. Nottingham Forest meanwhile are on shaky ground, sitting just a single point clear of the re-election zone, although their goal difference is a massive bonus thanks to strong wins over Bolton and Notts County. Forest scored first in the 37th minute, but were clearly the worse side. As the second half got underway, Leicester came with more fire to score in the 59th minute but were unable to find anything else and the two sides split the points.
1 - 1
Loughborough vs. Blackpool
Loughborough have had a decent season, ditching their usual ways of drawing most games to instead have more decisive wins and losses, which sees them sitting one place higher in the table than they have ever finished. Blackpool meanwhile are currently in the re-election zone and locked in a tight battle to stay in the division. Loughborough looked the better side throughout this match but as the match entered added time nobody had been able to score. It was very late winner and Blackpool's only good shot all game that saw them take the win.
0 - 1
Everton vs. Burnley
Everton are currently looked in a battle to try and return back to the first division as they take on fellow League founder Burnley who have been fairly unexciting this season, having previously been a play-off chaser. Everton easily won this one scoring in both the 17th and 71st minutes to walk away with both points and remain in the promotion hunt.
2 - 0
Bury vs. Bolton Wanderers
Probably the most predictable match of this week, as top of the league Bury, who have lost just once all season take on a Bolton side who have not looked good in years. Bury made it hard for themselves but scored in the 76th and 89th minutes to take the expected wins and dropping Bolton down in the bottom 3.
2 - 0
Sunderland AFC vs. Newcastle United
The Tyne-Wear Derby is our final match for this week of Football as Newcastle take on Sunderland AFC. Sunderland have struggled in this season, sitting at the bottom of the league with just 8 points. Newcastle meanwhile will also be disappointed in their performance as after losing their playoff match they find themselves well off the pace for another crack at promotion. Newcastle got things underway quickly with a goal in the 11th minute and Sunderland never managed to find a good chance to get anything back, costing them the match.
