1896/97 Division 2 - Week 6
Burton Wanderers vs. Blackpool
Blackpool became the first side to ever survive back-to-back reelections last season, with the only newly voted in team being the home team here, Burton Wanderers. This match at Derby Turns marks our first time properly seeing a Wanderers match, after many years of seeking election which has pretty much been happening since Burton Swifts were voted out of the league in '94. The performances of both sides so far can only really be described as disappointing, particularly as many believe Burton should be doing much better. Blackpool are still searching for their first win, while Burton have turned things around, with 2 wins back-to-back. It was a third today as a single 77th minute goal handed Burton the win in a match they dominated.
Everton vs. Fairfield
Both sides here will be looking for a win, as Fairfield have fallen into a dicey financial situation having risked it all to cement themselves as a consistent fixture of the division, while Everton will surely be looking to return to Division One after just falling short last season. Everton were the better side in this one, scoring in the 22nd minute to go ahead. A chance by Fairfield in the 62nd minute turned into a goal and despite looking the better side throughout the match, Everton were forced to settle for a draw.
Sunderland AFC vs. Accrington
After 3 years of being made fun of for their poor performances, Sunderland AFC fans would surely be hoping to finally to finally avoid this after getting through the reelection process. It seems all they can do however is suffer and hope as the performances this season have not been looking any better. Accrington meanwhile, looking set for a middling season. It's pretty unsurprising when Accrington open scoring in the 14th minute in what ends up being the only goal of the match.
Bolton Wanderers vs. Loughborough
Bolton's performance this season has been pretty poor, with a defence that has not looked capable of stopping a goal from a pensioner. Louughbrough meanwhile have been decent. Not amazing, but a solid side in the league. Both sides in this were evenly matched for most part, but Bolton's defence was what let them down, and while Loughborough squandered their chances on multiple occasions, eventually one was going to go in and it happened in the 83rd minute, to hand Loughborough the points.
Liverpool vs. Grimsby Town
A big match-up in terms of the title battle as both of these sides are competing at in battle to gain one of the spots in the promotion playoffs. Goals in the 17th and 41st minutes saw Liverpool walk away with the win, as they look set to finish the week in the top 2.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Bury
Both sides in this one will be looking for the win after a few draws in their early season have stopped them from being in better positions. Both definitely have squads to compete for the playoffs, with Wolves having the best defence in the league, while Bury are reigning champions. Both sides currently undefeated it felt like something had to give in this match and one side did, as a 79th minute goal saw Wolves brush aside Bury in a more one-sided match than expected.
Leicester Fosse vs. Burnley
Our second last match of the week between two midtable sides, with neither looking particularly likely to do much of anything whatever the result of this match is. Leicester score once in the 85th minute in what is a pretty tight affair to move themselves further from the bottom 3 spots. Honestly despite my lack of fan-fare, probably the best match of this write-up so far.
Nottingham Forest vs. Newcastle United
Depending on the result of this match, Newcastle can either move into the top 2 spots, taking the lead in draws or losing their undefeated run this season so far as they head out to face Nottingham Forest, who are now the only Nottingham side in the Football League following Notts County being voted out of the league. Forest were terrible in this match, getting completely overwhelmed by Newcastle, suffering goals in the 28th and 64th minutes and never looking any sort of threat to the Magpies.
