1897-98 Football League Division 1 Preview & Predicted Standings
Bootle
Winning both the FA Cup and Football League last season it is hard to look past Bootle as the favourites to achieve that once again. A win this season for the side would see them become the Football League's most successful side with 4 titles. Hawthorne Road's trophy cabinet has grown massively over the past 4 years and it is hard not to see this momentum continuing.
Aston Villa
This will be Villa's 10th season in the Football League and across all 9 seasons they have appeared they have yet to fall out of the top 5 sides, with 3 titles wins they arguably the biggest team in the league. This season Villa have made the move into a new stadium at Villa Park, which is expected to be a boost to the clubs already strong fortunes.
Blackburn Rovers
Another of the Football League's 4 champions is the side predicted to finish 3rd as after a rocky early few years in the Football League, Blackburn have successfully managed to push on and become one of the league's Premier sides, with Ewood Park playing host to many of the best matches of the season.
Liverpool
Following their impressive campaign in the second division which saw them beat out strong Bury and Wolves sides to the title and successfully managing to get through the playoffs Liverpool look like they could be an outside hopeful for the title this season, with the side at Anfield looking like one that could compete with the best in the division.
Sheffield United
Last season the Blades were able to start turning their fortunes from being a perennial relegation battling side to become an solid upper-table side and this season looks like it could be a continuation of this momentum as the Bramall Lane based side will be looking towards the top group of teams.
The Wednesday
Based at Olive Grove, The Wednesday are an old reliable side for finishing in the upper half of the table without making much of a challenge towards the title. That does not look likely to change this season as the side once again look to a solid side for the division but nothing spectacular.
Darwen
Arguably the most dramatic boring side, Darwen are a side that will give you the hope of doing something interesting with their season, whether that is looking really poor and like a relegation contender or being good enough to slot in with the top sides. Ultimately however, patchy form of the Barley Bank side always seems to find them placed in the middle of the table.
Woolwich Arsenal
After many season battling relegation and looking like a side that could easily end up falling back down into the second division, Arsenal are starting to come into their own and look like a side that belong in this league and deserve to be here. As such it is fully expected that the Manor Ground side will be able to compete this season and should be safe from any danger in the middle of the table.
Derby County
Last season's biggest suprise package, it felt at times there was a small chance Baseball Ground might become the ground of the newest football league champions. It was not to be however and it looks like Derby have regressed a bit in their quality this season in comparison to last.
West Bromwich Albion
Of the 4 sides to have appeared in every single Division One season, West Brom are the only ones not to have a single title to their name, having fallen behind newer teams in a run that culminated in the side finishing bottom 2 seasons ago. They survived the playoffs however and managed to have a strong run last season. Still, it is hard to back Stoney Lane's residents as being a particularly good side this upcoming season.
Walsall
From the game-changing, FA Cup winning side that won Division 2 on their return it feels like Walsall have fallen off over the past few season. It is hard to see that changing this season as Fellows Park seems like it will likely be home to some bad days this season.
Crewe Alexandra
It feels like there is a slight trend in teams coming up from Division 2 with a very strong debut only to get knocked down in their second season and often end up finding themselves dragged down towards the bottom of the table and potentially into the relegation playoff spots and being honest, I fully expect to see that happen at Gresty Road this season.
Sunderland Albion
I do not know what it is about Sunderland, but it just seems to be struggling to have any side that can make an impact in the Football League, with Albion still struggling to form a side that will be capable of competing in the division. Depending on the out-come of the expansion vote, there is a chance Blue House Stadium could be playing host to some relegation playoff matches this season.
Middlesbrough Ironopolis
Rumour has it the money has run out for Ironopolis as Paradise Ground will once again find itself the home of a fight to stay in Division One. Despite looking to have a weak side this season, it is hard to see Ironopolis ending up in the bottom 2 as the side just have a way to survive no matter how bad they look.
Preston North End
Having gone undefeated in the playoffs, Preston do not look to have strengthened anywhere near enough to safely secure their spot in the division. While they are likely to scrap it out with some of the other sides at the bottom of the division, I still expect Deepdale will be seeing enough losses for them to be in the bottom 2.
Newton Heath
And the favourites to finish in dead last this season are Newton Heath. The Manchester based side just do not look good enough in my opinion to compete with the other sides in this division and will be relying solely on the decision of an expansion of the division to retain their spot. It will likely be a long season for fans at Bank Street and even if the side do survive, it is hard to see the club improving in the future and will likely to return to Division 2 which is more towards the side's level.
Last day of voting and when that finishes a new poll will be put up for 7 different sides' potential badges. I believe I have my shortlist of clubs lined out although the results of the expansion voting are completely inconclusive.
