1897-98 Division 2 Preview
Wolverhampton Wanderers
The hunt for promotion back to Division One has been going on for 3 years now for Wolves but the side have yet to build a squad competitive enough to get promoted. This year could be the difference maker however as they look to be the best side in the Division. A win this year would see the Molineux-based side become the first ever 2 time second division champions.
Bury
Right behind Wolves once again is expected to be the side from Gigg Lane as Bury just missed out on the playoffs last season in a tight battle at the top, having lost out on promotion the season before. It feels like the side are bound to eventually find their way up into the top division but whether this will be the season remains unclear.
Nottingham Forest
Forest look as if they may have built the first strong football team in the city in the 10 years the Football League has existed. The side look like they could be a genuine contender for promotion and could be looking to bring Division 1 football to Town Ground for the first time.
Everton
Everton seem to find themselves once again looking like the 4th best team in a 3-horse race, having consistently been a good side at this level, the side from Goodison Park still do not look like a strong contender for promotion although there is always a chance they get it right this time and bring a third Merseyside team into Division One
Burton Wanderers
A slow start to the season at Derby Turn was met with a great finish as Burton Wanderers really grew into the Football League, now looking to be a good side for this level. I expect the same this season, potentially with a good run of form the side could even make a charge for the promotion playoff spots.
Luton Town
It seems of the three newly elected sides to the division only Luton thought to try and strength their squad and I think that will help Dunstable Road be host to one of the better sides in the division. There is some really quality at the top though so I suspect the side will do well, but the playoffs will be a bit too far out of reach.
Leicester Fosse
A solid side at this level, this will be Leicester Fosse's 3rd season following their election to the division, with Filbert Street playing host to some good wins for the side. It is once again expected the side will be a decent team in the division although it is unlikely they will be anything particularly stand out.
Burnley
Turf Moor has played host to Burnley for the whole of their run with both the Football League and Alliance and over the last 7 seasons. Not much has happened. There was a promotion charge that one time in 94/95 and that's it. I expect nothing different this season.
Accrington
Another side that has been a steady member of the second division, after coming down in 1893 Accrington had one season where they pushed to get promoted but since then have settled into being a side locked in the middle of the table, with Thorneyholme Road looking set to continue to play host to Division 2 football for the forseeable future.
Grimsby Town
Another side I expect to be a decent midtable side this year are the boys from Abbey Park, with Grimsby's side looking to be at the level I would expect for a side in this division. I see them finishing right in the middle of the table, not close to the top or the bottom.
Fairfield
The final team who look to be fielding a decent side this year are Fairfield and while they are probably at a similar level to many of those above them, I am wary of putting them higher given the side have struggled to really make Gransmoor Road feel like it will be a constant fixture at this level. This season however they look more stable than last year.
Newcastle United
For a place as big as Newcastle, you would expect their local side to be better but St. James's Park looks like it will be playing host to one of the worse sides in this division, although the side should still be competitive this season.
Birmingham St George's
I am a bit worried about what the Dragons' fate might be come the end of the season as I fear poor results may see the side struggle to maintain the required attendance to fund the club and they will be forced to close up shop after being in the Football League for the past 8 years. While they still play at Cape Hill Brewery, funding from the Brewery was cut back recently and it seems the club has struggled to maintain themselves without this reliable financing.
Stoke
After 5 years of fighting to get back into the Football League, you would be forgiven for thinking Stoke would build a better squad. They really have not done the work I would expect however and honestly look to be a bit disappointing on paper, although we will have to see how things look at Victoria Ground before we make any judgements.
Loughborough
One of two sides that just look like they will be out of their depth this season, Athletic Ground's Loughborough just do not look to have the quality in their side to be much good, possibly hoping to use the lack of re-election this season as an excuse to rebuild their squad.
Nelson
I am not entirely sure why Nelson even decided to apply for re-election when not only did they not have the squad required to compete at this level, they have also not been able to attract the level of players required to compete. I fully expect a miserable season at Seedhill Football Ground as the side are likely going to struggle at this level of football.
