The nWo have all the gold in WCW.
Souled Out 1997 was a smashing success.
The nWo had a shocking new member make his presence known in the main event.
Welcome to the nWo/WCW Storyline done right in 1997.
This diary is more "what if" like never done before. Mainly because the "what if" involves Hogan as WCW Heavyweight Champion on his initial title run from when he beat Ric Flair at Bash at the Beach 1994, but never lost it at Halloween Havoc '95. Yes, this is a "what if" no WCW shenanigans happened in the early days of Nitro in '95.
I've been working on this save for a long time and it's time it was put into words.
Here's the story so far...
May 1996, two Outsiders show up on Nitro and say they are taking over, and want to face the absolute best WCW has to offer.
Fast forward to July, we see the Outsiders against Luger, Sting, Savage and Hogan in a 2 against 4 handicap match. But by the end of the night, the world is shocked to see Hogan and Savage turn on Luger and Sting as Savage hits his elbow drop on Luger after Sting tagged Luger in the match and Hogan hit a cheap shot on Luger after he was tagged. Hogan then hits his Leg Drop on Luger as the match is completely thrown out and it turns into a 4 on 1 mugging on Luger as Sting is completely unaware until it was too late.
After the events of Bash at the Beach, the nWo continued to expand in members. But the biggest was yet to come at Souled Out.
January 1997 was a big month for WCW, the nWo had destroyed everything put in their way at StarrCade the previous year, including putting Ric Flair on the shelf for a few months after he tried and failed to regain the WCW Heavyweight Title from Hogan.
Arn and Benoit tried to do the same against Hall and Nash alongside Harlem Heat and Faces of Fear in a fatal four way tag match for the WCW Tag Titles. But with the help of new member Buff Bagwell, The Outsiders were able to retain by pinning Stevie Ray.
Souled Out 1997.
By far the biggest night for the nWo because they won their respective matches at StarrCade, they had full control over what title matches would happen on the PPV. But J.J. Dillon said that Hogan would defend his title against The Giant. The nWo were completely irate over the news, and Hogan has to deal with his toughest challenge to date at Souled Out.
Up north in the WWF a certain Heartbreak Kid is frustrated with his current booking as World Champion and hands in his two week notice and the title and walks out of Vince's office.
(More on that later)
Souled Out was a superb show top to bottom.
Rey Mysterio jr. led his team to victory in a cruiserweight showcase match with high flying action all over the place.
Eddie and Savage had a tremendous match from beginning to end for the US Title, but Savage won it for the nWo by the end of it, scoring the first of many victories for the faction that night.
Syxx would then go on to win the Cruiserweight Title from Ultimo Dragon in a four way match by submitting Shane Helms.
Even the women's division had some shine on the show, yes an actual women's division in WCW that had some good talent in it, but by the end of the match a shocking turn with one of the women winning as she revealed an nWo shirt underneath after she picked up the victory.
Buff Bagwell won the TV Title from Lord Steven Regal in another four way match with Jim Duggan and Brad Armstrong by pinning Brad.
The Outsiders had an easy match as they demolished the Nasty Boys.
Then it was time for the main event, Giant vs Hogan. It was a back and forth match for almost 15 minutes. The closing moments of the match saw Giant pick Hogan up for a chokeslam, and only scores a two count. The audience is shocked as nobody ever kicked out of Giant's chokeslam. Giant then goes to hit another when a masked figure jumps the barricade and hits a superkick on the Giant, the masked figure then reveals himself to be Shawn Michaels and he's wearing an nWo shirt. Hogan then hits the Leg Drop for the 1-2-3.
Now as we prepare for SuperBrawl VII, the nWo is the strongest faction in professional wrestling today.
Who will stop them?
