In Football (soccer) we have 'cult heroes' who may not be the best player at a football club but they are adored by a small section of fans for one reason or another.
I was thinking about this in wrestling terms and just wondered if anyone else had this?
I'll name a few of mine with some reasoning (or madness )
1. Scotty Riggs/Scotty Anton -
I liked Riggs in WCW with 'The Flock' but was really disappointed he just seemed to be a squash guy for other wrestlers. He had a great look and Raven gave him some character with the eye/chair angle and eye patch. Felt like there was a bit of a missed opportunity for him to not get more of a push. When he showed up in ECW I was happy because he seemed to get his 'shot' in the limelight and I really enjoyed the Scotty Anton character with 'The Clap' - when I started seeing the Daniel Bryan 'Yes' thing get over in WWE, my first thought was Scotty Anton and 'The Clap' - and how I think it would have gotten over with the fans on a bigger stage. His feud with RVD was really well done too.
2. Scott Vick/Sick Boy -
Similar to the above but Vick looked quality in his matches in WCW despite usually doing the job. I thought he moved amazingly for a big guy and with some character development, he could have had some great matches if he was booked better.
3. Stevie Richards -
I suppose you could argue he did achieve a lot of success in his career more than the two mentioned above but I'll always be a Stevie fan ever since ECW days. His look, his mic work and in the ring I thought he was a great all arounder and wonder what could have been if he had been booked differently.
Some others off the top of my head would have to be Kanyon, Norman Smiley, Perry Saturn (ECW/early WCW version), Steve Corino, Michael Shane, Neil Sanders, Chris Candido.
Big fans of all these guys and I think they should/could have done a lot more in the business.
