The 2001 WWF Royal Rumble will air LIVE on Pay-Per-View on January 21st, 2001 from the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana!Announced for The Royal Rumble:The Royal Rumble: Winner receives a WWF Championship match in the main event of WrestleMania X-7!Announced Participants: The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Kane, Rikishi (#30), Faarooq, Bradshaw, Steve BlackmanWWF Championship: Kurt Angle © vs. "The Game" Triple HWWF Intercontinental Championship - Ladder Match: "Rabid Wolverine" Chris Benoit vs. "Y2J" Chris JerichoWWF Tag Team Championships: Edge & Christian © vs. The Dudley Boyz
WWF Women's Championship: Ivory © vs. Chyna Card Subject to Change
The Week's Write-Up: January Week 1, 2001The reason that The Rock was taken out of the fatal four way is allegedly because he was inconsolable about the idea of Rikishi winning the match. Even when assured that he would come out looking great, he was going to be furious about it. Undertaker also complained, and was ready to pull his creative control card, but he relented when assured that Kane would be taking the fall and that he would come out looking strong. Jushin "Thunder" Liger has agreed to join All Japan Pro-Wrestling! He will be working both AJPW and NJPW shows in the future, and will definitely give both shows quite the boost. The crowd for RAW really did not care for the match featuring the referees, jeering loudly every time they were a focal point of the bout. The WWF may be getting a little too comfortable now that WCW are in the rear view mirror, feeling that The Rock can carry just about anything, but there are hills too high for even him to climb sometimes. The angle on RAW that saw the Hardy Boyz brutally attack Dean Malenko's knee - while being a tasteless act of showing Lita in the shower - was also done in order to write him off of television for a short time. Malenko sat most of the six man tag match out on the apron because he recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, and this will allow him time to heal up. Goldberg has a featured interview in this month's issue of Playboy magazine. Next month will be Vince McMahon himself. This is a big sign of the popularity that pro wrestling is enjoying right now. Big news in NJPW, as this past week's World Pro Wrestling witnessed the major heel turn of Riki Choshu. It will be interesting to see what he does in his new role. Bam Bam Bigelow was very clearly wrestling while "under the influence" in his match against Ernest Miller. Surprisingly for WCW, they decided to do something about it, and he has checked into a rehab center. I'm sure if it were, say, Kevin Nash who was wrestling in that state, he would have been given a pay raise, but all in all we are hoping that Bigelow can come out of this in better shape. The time has come for legends like Mike Graham and Larry Zbyszko. They have both let promotors know that after clearing out any dates that they have had booked for the next three months that they are leaving behind their semi-active status and will only work out of ring roles. TBS were reportedly unhappy with the quality of Thunder. One has to wonder why this has only been a problem now as opposed to, say, the past three years of the show slowly (and sometimes quickly) circling the drain? William Regal has allegedly been working while banged up, which is why the sudden title switch on SmackDown. He is being linked with the McMahon feud though so we're pretty sure he's going to be doing just fine. AJPW saw new champions crowned as the vacant AJPW Unified Tag Team titles were won by "Dr. Death" Steve Williams and Mike Rotundo. Reports say that Kevin Nash was talking after the WCW taping at how he didn't think The Wall would ever be able to connect with fans and should just be written off. It's just like him to try and hamper another big man, especially one that's younger and can move better. Brian Christopher had to be "convinced" (aka threatened) to lose to Funaki on Heat. The finish was amusing in it's own way, but he must have felt they still had their popularity from last year and wanted to get the win instead of having a clever ending in loss. Toshiyo Yamada began her first reign as AJW's WWWA All Pacific champion by winning the title from Yomoko Watanabe this past Monday. Jerry Lynn was heard saying that he felt he had strained his neck during his match at the ECW show on Saturday. If this is to be the final ECW show, it seems fitting that someone would pick up an injury at it. Someone reported that there was a bad taste rib played on The Kat backstage at SmackDown. She was visibly and vocally angered by it, and Jerry Lawler was also very upset, calling it "childish" behavior. Test and Funaki were topics that seemed to be heard coming up at a booking meeting recently, as Bruce Prichard felt that Funaki could be trusted with a little bit of mic time, while Michael Hayes wondered why we were getting behind Test recently as he feels he's never going to "get it". Hayes does know a little something about good big men, so who can discount his opinion? By the same coin, Steve Austin was overheard at a local bar saying he didn't think Billy Gunn was ever getting out of his midcard role no matter how much they repackage him. Several veterans were overhead talking about how young up and comers like Justin Credible, Shawn Stasiak, Kid Romeo, and Cutie Suzuki may be stars to watch for the future. On a recent blog post, it was noted that Yoshihiro Tajiri seems to feel like Roadkill has the potential to be a star in the business, and could be worth pushing very hard.
