January, Week 2: Sunday, January 21st, 2001
The Week's Write-Up: January, Week 2, 2001 Big news in Japan from Monday as Shinya Hashimoto has decided to join AJPW. He is still getting Pro Wrestling ZERO-ONE set up, but has agreed to join All Japan as well. It will be interesting to see what one of the original "Three Muskateers" does in this unfamiliar territory.
Paul Heyman has been trying to search out a new home for ECW. Some have felt that perhaps he is letting this search take his eye off the ball, so to speak, but Heyman himself has said that at this point, he isn't as necessary in a booking room as he has total confidence in Tommy Dreamer and Gabe Saplosky to handle the product. But unless they find a new deal, that product could easily disappear for good.
WCW held Sin last weekend, and allegedly the team are catching a lot of heat from above as Time Warner weren't pleased with the quality of the show. If the new regime keep stumbling out of the gate like this, it definitely spells trouble for the future of the company.
Mike Awesome sustained an ankle sprain during his match on Nitro. Evan Karagias is getting some heat backstage because it was felt to be his fault for botching a fairly simple maneuver with Awesome.
NJPW New Century Dash! took place this past Friday. The best match of the night was in the main event, as Kensuke Sasaki narrowly defeated Tatsumi Fujinami to retain the IWGP Heavyweight championship. Keiji Mutoh was definitely the performer of the evening during the tag team match featuring he and Taiyo Kea in their BATT team defeating Big Mountains team of Manabu Nakanishi and Yutaka Yoshie. The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles found a new home after having been vacated following the shoulder injury of Koji Kanemoto. The new champions of Jushin Liger and El Samurai defeated Jado & Gedo to win the titles, marking Liger's second title wearing the title and Samurai's first. Also the IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship was won by Kazunari Murukami, defeating previous champion Minoru Tanaka. Tanaka started the year holding two IWGP Junior Heavyweight championships (the singles and tag) and lost both of them in the past week. The show has received rave reviews from wrestling journalists such as myself.
Also the 2001 Giant Baba Memorial Cup was held on Saturday night. The main event saw Masato Tanaka defeat WCW's Kaz Hayashi. Most were surprised that Eric Bischoff allowed him to attend the show, let alone lose in the main event, with speculation that perhaps he sneaked away to wrestle without getting permission. Thus far there is no word on whether this charity event will take place next year or not.
Joshi legend Jaguar Yokota has decided to fully retire. She was already out of wrestling spending time with her family, but she has made the difficult decision not to return.
Word has it that backstage at SmackDown, Kane laid out some of his own money to put together a bigger catering room than usual. This really improved everyone's mood.
In the six man tag team match on Thunder, rumors are that Hugh Morrus felt he needed to be protected in order to take the fall. His complaint had less to do with Shane Douglas defeating him, moreso that Lash LeRoux was right there and wouldn't have gotten hurt by dropping a match that involved the Harris Twins. He got away with it this week, as the finish saw him get in an argument with partner Chavo Guerrero Jr., but we will have to keep an eye on this to see if this becomes a reoccuring issue.
Speaking of the MIA, Sgt. A-WALL, a.k.a. The Wall, found himself in hot water following Sin. Everyone watching could see how messed up he was on drugs during the battle royal, and because of it he was fined and then sent to rehab.
Bubba Ray Dudley was allegedly taken to task before RAW when he didn't join the others for a night out. Judge Tony Chimel decided that he needed to buy everyone drinks to make up for it.
There were three injuries reported coming out of the AJW Glass Grave Yard Tour show this past Monday. Manami Toyota picked up a Grade II Groin Strain during her match against Etsuko Mita, putting her on the shelf for most of this month; Akira Hokuto will miss the rest of January with a Broken Collar Bone picked up in her match with Miho Wakazawa; and Nanae Takahashi was squaring off with Rie Tamada when she developed a Hernia, which will put her out of action for the next three months. No one was blamed for any of the injuries, considering them "part of being an active participant".
TBS was apparently unhappy yet again with Thunder, and could be looking to pull the show sooner rather than later. They should have done it years ago.
Japanese commercial broadcaster Fighting TV! Samurai are really upping their puroresu catalog this week. They have agreed to air events and highlight shows for both Michinoku Pro and ZERO-ONE. ZERO-ONE surprised quite a few people, but they seem to be looking to get a big jump immediately. The company has yet to run their first show, but they have already struck this big deal. This adds the two promotions to the lineup of wrestling on that channel alongside NJPW, NOAH, and BattlARTS. Osaka Pro also announced a deal to show their events on Kyoto Broadcasting System.
Steve Austin was said to be speaking very highly of Funaki to management, which is what led to the segment involving the two of them on RAW. "The sumbitch can talk better'n some'a these jackasses who only know English" was apparently the consensus from "Stone Cold".
Kevin Nash was on the warpath again, allegedly targeting Alex Wright, Reno, and Don Harris as guys who should just get cut out of WCW. With Nash saying it, I would expect Bischoff to let them go almost immediately. In fact the Millionaire's Club had it all out for people this past week, as local bar patrons also overheard Sid talking about how little upside he sees with Kaz Hayashi, Goldberg thinking Yang has no future here, Ric Flair felt Ron Harris should go, and Scott Steiner spouting off how he didn't think Big Vito was worth a damn. The only bright spot was a quote from Hugh Morrus about how Mark Jindrak looks like he could make something of himself.
Scott D'Amore may not be a name that means anything much right now, but according to some veterans who went to the last BCW show, it should become a name in the future. D'Amore wrestles for the promotion as well as running it, and they praised how well the show flowed.
Rumors have it that cult internet favorite Rollin' Hard has walked out on IWA-MS this past weekend. He allegedly felt that he had been passed over for a payment or two, so decided to quit right on the spot before their Simply The Best 2 event.
Kazunari Murukami seems to also be a big talking point among many in wrestling. The two year pro currently has contracted work for New Japan, BattlARTS, and ZERO-ONE, so if he can stay healthy, some feel he could be leading a company in the next few years, and New-Japan seem to see it as well as they are letting him have a run with their Junior Heavyweight championship.

Yeah, that's the problem with the Wall I was a big fan of him after watching his work in TNA and always was trying to push the guy... and it always was ending the same result. Waiting for RR!

January, Week 2: Sunday, January 21st, 2001
Okay, so one quick thing. I actually forgot to screenshot the ACTUAL report. This is one that I did off of a copied file, because I do that when I finish a big event; copy the file before running it so that I can go back and check notes on things like what ref I used, some of the notes I made, etc. I ended up having to run the show off that one to get the screen grab. There wasn't a lot of difference, but there was enough variance that the actual show rating was a B-, not a C+. Also, I know I said the show would have been up before now, but.... toddler parent life. *shrug*
Predictions time! Obviously the show basically was the same as the real 2001 Rumble, because honestly, I think that was a nearly perfect show. The only true difference is that TEW16 doesn't let me do the Drew Carey thing, but I still had him make his appearance - just not joining in the Rumble.

So dhk walks away winning for the Rumble, and also takes it for the January month of events! I will be DM'ing you your spoils very soon. Thanks everyone for sticking with me!
