WrestleMania V: "The Mega Powers Explode" Venue: Trump Plaza, Atlantic City, NJ Date: April 2, 1989
Tensions run high in the final build to Wrestlemania. Despite not featuring the WWF Championship match, Hogan vs Savage is slotted in the main event as Savage grows increasingly paranoid over "Hogan's lust for Elizabeth". In an even more surprising twist, Warrior doesn't even defend the WWF title in this one as his match with Rick Rude is non-title. This stems from Warrior costing Rude against Rick Martel on Prime Time Wrestling. Rick Martel will now defend the Intercontinental title against Tito Santana. As for Bobby Heenan's gamble, it doesn't pay off as Demolition defeats The Brain Busters in March in a non-televised event and are defending it against The Hart Foundation. Elsewhere, Rockin' Robin defeated Alundra Blayze in mid-March and makes her first title defense at Wrestlemania against Sensational Sherri.
Match Card Opening Match: The Bushwhackers vs. The Fabulous Rougeaus
Outcome: The Bushwhackers win after a wild brawl, using their unique style and high energy to outmaneuver the Rougeaus, giving the crowd a fun start to the event. Women’s Championship Match: Rockin' Robin (c) vs. Sensational Sherri
Outcome: Rockin' Robin retains her title in a fierce matchup that showcases both women's wrestling skills. After a series of near falls, Robin hits a flying crossbody for the win, setting her up for a future feud with Sherri. The Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude
Outcome: In a hard-hitting contest, The Ultimate Warrior prevails after overcoming Rude’s cunning tactics. Warrior powers up with his signature no-sell and hits the Warrior Splash for the pin. Tag Team Championship: Demolition (c) vs. The Hart Foundation
Outcome: A back-and-forth encounter that sees both teams use their unique styles. Demolition retains the titles after a controversial finish where the referee misses a double-team out of sight, allowing Ax to pin Bret Hart. Jake Roberts vs. Ted DiBiase
Outcome: The match ends with a shocking finish when Damien, Jake’s snake, makes an unexpected appearance, distracting DiBiase. Jake seizes the opportunity, hitting the DDT and scoring the pin. Intercontinental Championship: Rick Martel (c) vs. Tito Santana
Outcome: This highly anticipated rematch showcases the technical skill of both wrestlers. After a dramatic finish with several pin attempts, Martel scores the win with his signature Flying Body Press. “Macho Man” Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan (Main Event)
Outcome: The main event sees the explosive culmination of the Mega Powers storyline and the breaking of their friendship. The tension is palpable throughout the match as they exchange heated blows. After a series of near falls and missed timings, Hogan starts to mount a comeback but is distracted by the arrival of Liz, leading to Savage gaining the upper hand. In a dramatic finish, Hogan delivers the Leg Drop, but Savage kicks out at the last moment, shocking the crowd. Ultimately, Hogan wins after a climactic sequence, solidifying the end of the Mega Powers. Post-Match Segment
After the match, an emotional Hogan helps Savage to his feet, showing respect for the former champion. However, emotions run high as Savage shoves Hogan, leading to an intense confrontation that sets up a potential future feud between them. He then walks away, holding his head high but visibly shaken.
