The 1989 Royal Rumble event, held at the Houston Astrodome, delivered a night of high-impact action, surprising turns, and intense rivalries. As the official start of the road to GWC WrestleMania, the card featured some of the best talents from around the world. Here’s a breakdown of the night's matches:
GWC International Title Match Kenta Kobashi (c.) vs. Sam Houston Result: Kenta Kobashi def. Sam Houston by pinfall in 10 minutes with the Orange Crush (Vertical suplex powerbomb).
The opening bout set the tone for the night, as Kenta Kobashi defended his GWC International Title against Sam Houston. Kobashi, known for his brutal style and innovative offense, showed why he’s considered one of the best in the world today. Houston, though valiant, was unable to keep up with the power and precision of the champion. After several hard-hitting exchanges, Kobashi hit the Orange Crush to seal the victory. Houston, though defeated, earned the respect of the crowd for his valiant effort, but Kobashi’s reign remains intact.
Tag Team Match The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart) vs. Doom #1 & Doom #2 Result: No contest when the Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) attacked both teams.
In what was shaping up to be a classic tag team clash, the Hart Foundation squared off against the masked duo of Doom. Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, two of the most technically sound wrestlers in the industry, were locked in a back-and-forth contest with Doom’s power-heavy offense. Just as the match reached a boiling point, the Road Warriors, the current GWC Tag Team Champions, stormed the ring, attacking both teams with their usual brute force. The brawl quickly spiraled out of control, and the match was ruled a no contest. The fans were left wondering what would happen next in the tag team division, as it was clear that the Road Warriors weren’t interested in sharing the spotlight.
GWC World Women’s 4-Way Match Rockin' Robin (c.) vs. Judy Martin vs. Chigusa Nagayo vs. Madusa Result: Rockin' Robin def. Chigusa Nagayo, Judy Martin, and Madusa by pinfall to Chigusa with a roll-up.
The GWC World Women's Championship was up for grabs in a thrilling four-way contest, showcasing some of the top female wrestlers from around the world. Rockin' Robin, who had been a dominant champion, faced fierce competition from Judy Martin, Japan’s Chigusa Nagayo, and the dangerous Madusa. All four women had their moments to shine, with the action fast-paced and non-stop. However, it was Rockin' Robin who outlasted her competitors, securing the win with a surprise roll-up on Chigusa Nagayo to retain her title. The match was a highlight for fans who had been eager to see such high-caliber competition among the women’s division.

In the end, it was Harley Race’s experience and resilience that prevailed. Race delivered a thunderous piledriver to Haku and scored the pinfall victory, much to the approval of the Houston crowd. Race now has his sights set on the US Title, but who will stand in his way at WrestleWar?
Royal Rumble Match Winner Receives a World Title Shot at WrestleMania Against Ric Flair
Result: Hulk Hogan last eliminated Ted DiBiase and Kenta Kobashi to win the Royal Rumble.
The Royal Rumble Match was the centerpiece of the evening, and it did not disappoint. With a star-studded field, including the likes of Hulk Hogan, Ted DiBiase, Kenta Kobashi, and a host of other top GWC talent, the Rumble was packed with drama and intense action. Hogan, who had made his intentions clear about wanting another shot at the GWC World Title, entered as one of the last competitors. The final moments of the match were filled with suspense as Hogan faced off with DiBiase and Kobashi. After a series of near-eliminations, Hogan managed to outlast both men, throwing Ted DiBiase over the top rope and then eliminating Kobashi in dramatic fashion to claim victory.
However, the celebration was short-lived. Just after the match, the Four Horsemen—Ric Flair’s stable—stormed the ring, launching a brutal attack on Hulk Hogan. The Horsemen made it clear that they weren't going to let Hogan’s win go unchallenged. The segment ended with Hogan being laid out, setting the stage for what promises to be an epic showdown at WrestleMania.
