July 2004, Week 2
July 12th, 2004
Worldwide taping: Rellik over Lash Leroux, Made in Italy over Lenny Lane and Matt Bentley and Hayabusa over Adam Pearce.
Attendance: 16,980
Show Notes:
-Mortis got the show off to a good start by cooking food for the roster earlier in the day.
-Chris Jericho worked on psychology with Kevin Steen and promos with El Generico before the show.
-The face turns of TAKA and Tammy Sytch were both complete successes.
“The fans just don’t care about Cash. It might have been a mistake to extend his contract.” –CM Punk
July 17th, 2004
Show Notes:
-Meiko Satomura got on Gail Kim’s nerves before the show by taunting her place on the card. Not exactly what you want to hear about regarding your new champion. Arn Anderson felt it was a minor enough thing that he only gave her a slap on the wrist, but I hear that she was contrite about it afterwards anyway.
-Apple Miyuki and Kana did not make for a good team at all.
“Mercedes Martinez feels like she’s going to be really good.” –Trish Stratus
Upcoming WCW PPV Event(s):
News Updates:
Takako Inoue is being given a couple of months off to rest her knee up.
We brought in Toru Yano and Ryusuke Taguchi under a developmental deal to serve as an ‘excursion’ before returning to New Japan.
Elsewhere in the wrestling world:
Brock Lesnar turned face on Raw, coming to DDP’s aid as he was being ambushed by The Rock and Ric Flair. The two teams then wrestled to a no contest in the main event.
The ECW Heat Wave PPV was held in Hawaii (odd choice.) The WWE title was MIA in another odd choice (but they did make time for Coolie SZ vs. Justin Credible, so at least their priorities are straight.) Kane retained the ECW title over RVD in a 94 rated main event, though this was not RVD cashing in his MITB briefcase, which he still has in his back pocket. The show got an 89 overall.
NWA:TNA held their No Surrender show. No title matches this month, but there was a pretty high quality 63 rated main event where TNA champion Marc Mero teamed with Evan Karagis to beat Matt Sydal and BJ Whitmer. This was their 4th best match of the year so far, and the event itself got a 59 overall (also 4th on the year, though that’s less impressive since they run only one show a month.)
Zero-One’s Freedom of Golden PPV got a solid 80 overall, but it could’ve done much better if the card had been structured differently. Tadao Yasuda retained the Zero 1 World Heavyweight title over Alex Wright in a 79 rated match, which was only fourth best on the night. Easy match of the night honors went to Minoru Tanaka retaining the NWA National Heavyweight title over Yasushi Kanda, which got a 93.
In his first match back with WWE, Vader shattered his knee working as a tag team with Bam Bam Bigelow in a win over Super Loco and K-Kwik on ECW Hardcore TV. What rotten luck.
WWE brought back Animal from the Road Warriors and Rick Steiner from the Steiner brothers, as well as Rikishi.
WWE also brought in Kaori Yoneyama and Mima Shimoda for their women’s division.
