STARRCADE ‘91 (December 29, 1991)
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) defeated The Enforcers (Arn Anderson and Larry Zbyszko) when R. Steiner pinned
A. Anderson with the Steiner Bulldog in 18:55.
Rating: **** 1/4
(The Steiner Brothers won the WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES.)
What better way to start off WCW's biggest event of the year than with an absolute classic for the world tag team titles.
The Steiner Brothers finally got the best of the team that's been the thorn in their side for months, the Enforcers, taking away their gold, making it a dubious start for the Dangerous Alliance.
Thomas Zenk pinned Flyin' Brian after a small package in 0:15:19.
Rating: *** 1/2
With the York Foundation behind him, Thomas Zenk got the best of his former partner.
Zenk had the referee distracted while Alexandra York smacked Brian in the head with her computer, allowing Zenk to get an easy roll up.
Bobby Eaton pinned Stan Lane with the Alabama Jam in 6:43.
Rating: * 3/4
Another match between former partners, Bobby Eaton put one in the victory column for the Dangerous Alliance. Lane's hand injury suffered when the Enforcers slammed it in the cage door at Halloween Havoc was still an issue for him.
Eaton got a relatively easy victory as Eaton looks to fulfill his promise of transitioning from one of the best tag wrestlers WCW has seen, into one of the best singles wrestlers.
Cactus Jack pinned Van Hammer with the Double Arm DDT in 13:03.
Rating: ** 1/2
This quickly turned into a brutal brawl. Cactus' wild nature gave him quite an edge in that kind of fight against someone like Hammer who relies mostly on just size and strength.
At the end, Jack was able to get a shot in with Hammer's own guitar while the referee wasn't looking that led to the pin.
The Destruction Crew (Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom) defeated The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) when W. Bloom pinned
J. Garvin with the Butterfly Suplex in 8:50.
Rating: ** 1/4
The Destruction Crew picked up what has to be their biggest victory since coming over to WCW by beating the former world champions.
A big part of that, though, came from miscommunication between the Freebirds and their manager Diamond Dallas Page. DDP, inadvertently sucker punched Garvin trying to hit Bloom.
Garvin couldn't recover and the Crew got the win.
Ron Simmons pinned Paul Orndorff with the Powerslam in 7:39.
Rating: *** 3/4
Ron Simmons continued his revenge tour over everyone that cost him the world title at Halloween Havoc, using his raw power to score a big win over the veteran Orndorff.
The York Foundation (Richard Morton and Thomas Rich) defeated The Patriots (Firebreaker Chip and Todd Champion) when Morton pinned Champion after a flying cross body press in 10:26.
Rating: ***
(The York Foundation retained the WCW UNITED STATES TAG TEAM TITLES.)
The York Foundation finished off a flawless night when the tag team of Morton and Rich held on to their US Tag Titles.
Johnny B. Badd pinned Diamond Studd with the Tutti Frutti in 0:11:35.
Rating: * 1/2
Fans have been getting behind Johnny B. Badd since he separated himself from Teddy Long.
Studd was trying to get some revenge for Badd's sucker punch last month at the Clash, but Badd's quickness stung him again.
Rick Rude pinned Sting after a Victory Roll in 0:16:15.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Rick Rude won the WCW UNITED STATES TITLE.)
[Paul E. Dangerously interfered against Sting.]
A few weeks worth of attacks seem to have taken its toll on Sting. Rick Rude controlled most of the match over a less-than-100-percent Sting. But Stinger still was able to rally late.
If it wasn't for Paul E. smacking Sting in the head with his phone after a Stinger Splash on Rude, Sting may have retained his title.
However, Rude was able to take advantage and roll up Sting for the win.
Barry Windham pinned Lex Luger after a lariat in 20:26.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Barry Windham won the WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE.)
We have a New WORLD CHAMPION!! Barry Windham fought against all the odds, fought off Harley Race, Mr. Hughes and Paul Orndorff, and got the aid of Ron Simmons to keep them from interfering.
It was kept mostly one-on-one Windham vs. Luger and the big Texan thrived in a fair fight.
The match, though, did keep going back and forth with neither man keeping an edge for an extended period of time. But after Luger put together a solid few minutes, he was unable to put Windham away, Windham even kicked out of Luger's piledriver.
That was a turning point as Windham took over. He caught Luger with a Superplex then finally got the win after a flying lariat coming out of the corner.
Many wrestlers poured of the dressing room to help Windham celebrate his title win.
