BEACH BLAST (June 20, 1992)
No-Time-Limit-Match:
Dustin Rhodes pinned Steve Austin with the Bulldog in 14:02.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Dustin Rhodes won the WCW TELEVISION TITLE.)
After Rhodes came so close to winning the TV title from Steve Austin last week at the Clash of Champions, WCW officials decided their rematch needed to be a no time limit match.
Rhodes made the most of his second chance, finally becoming the one to dethrone Steve Austin as TV champion.
The Patriots (Firebreaker Chip and Todd Champion), Johnny B. Badd and Ricky Steamboat defeated The York Foundation (Richard Morton and Thomas Rich), Cactus Jack and Abdullah The Butcher when Champion pinned Cactus with the Patriot Missile in 13:52.
Rating: ** 3/4
A lot of animosity was on display between the various teams in this match. It resembled more of a street fight than wrestling match for good parts of it, as can be expected when you have 8 men in a ring who don’t like each other.
When it was all said and done, it was The Patriots standing tall, getting the win for their team.
Barry Windham pinned Paul Orndorff with the Superplex in 7:41.
Rating: ***
Barry Windham scored a measure of revenge against one of the men he held responsible for injuring him months ago, forcing him out of action and vacating his world title.
The Vacant title went in two directions, WCW awarded it to Sting after a tournament at Superbrawl. The NWA did not choose to follow suit, deciding their new champion in Japan.
However, after the match during an interview, Windham was approached by an NWA representative who said due to the circumstances, he is offering Windham a chance to win the NWA title back against new champion Masahiro Chono next month at the Great American Bash.
Marcus Alexander Bagwell defeated Greg Valentine by countout in 7:07.
Marcus Alexander Bagwell suffered a neck injury. He will be out for approximately 4 cards.
Rating: * 1/2
While a veteran in the wrestling world, Greg The Hammer Valentine is a new arrival to WCW. He was tasked with trying to cool off the redhot rookie Marcus Bagwell.
Valentine didn’t get the job done in one respect, Bagwell got the win via countout, but he did in another. After Bagwell beat the count back into the ring in the middle of a fight on the floor, Valentine pulled Bagwell back outside and continued to go to work after the bell. He left Bagwell laid out on the floor to which he had to get helped to the back.
The Destruction Crew (Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom) defeated Michael Hayes and Van Hammer when W. Bloom pinned M. Hayes after a flying headbutt in 17:53.
Rating: *** 1/4
[Dick Slater interfered against Michael Hayes.]
(The Destruction Crew retained the WCW UNITED STATES TAG TEAM TITLES.)
(Jimmy Garvin no-showed.)
The Freebirds got their shot at the US tag champions, but prior to the match, Jimmy Garvin was jumped backstage by the champs, Terry Gordy and Dick Slater.
Hayes picked Van Hammer to take Garvin’s place and the duo actually worked together quite well. However, it wasn’t enough against the fine-tuned machine the Destruction Crew has become.
Vinnie Vegas pinned Junkyard Dog with the Snake Eyes in 8:07.
Rating: * 1/4
Vinnie Vegas had a bit of an issue early on against the rugged veteran, but prevailed for maybe his most impressive singles win in WCW.
Flyin' Brian pinned Thomas Zenk with the Springboard Clothesline in 12:20.
Rating: ****
After getting a win over Zenk at last week’s clash via a lowblow, Brian issued an apology and offered Zenk a rematch.
But while it wasn’t another lowblow, Brian did take various cheap shots at several points during the match, but eventually got a clean pin.
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) defeated Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton when R. Steiner pinned B. Eaton after a spinning backbreaker in 15:01.
Rating: *** 1/2
(The Steiner Brothers retained the WCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES.)
[Paul E. Dangerously interfered against Scott Steiner.]
Paul E. pulled a bit of a swerve, teaming Bobby Eaton with Arn Anderson in tonight’s title match instead of Arn’s normal partner, Larry Zbyzko.
Undeterred, the Steiners were ready for anyone it seemed.
A really solid match that went back and forth, but the Steiners got the best in the end to hold on to their titles.
Sting defeated Rick Rude by disqualification in 0:13:12.
Rating: ***
(Sting retained the WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE.)
[Dustin Rhodes interfered against Rick Rude.]
[Bobby Eaton interfered against Sting.]
The main event turned into a mess. Mass interference from the Dangerous Alliance was countered by Sting’s friends, namely the Steiners, Dustin Rhodes and Ron Simmons.
The ref had no choice but to throw the match out, leaving nothing settled between the two old rivals, Sting and Rude.
