WTBS Studios Oct 9th, 1983VTR shows the ending of the Ron Garvin vs. Buzz Sawyer TV Title match from last week.
Gordon Solie: Welcome back to another week of World Championship Wrestling. This week we will have an update on World Television Champion, Ron Garvin. We will also hear from Stan "The Man" Hansen and NWA President Bob Geigel will be back to announce the participants for the 16 man Tournament to determine a new National Heavyweight Champion. Lets now go to the ring."Hacksaw" Jim Duggan ( with Precious Paul Ellering) vs. Mike Starbuck 10 minute time limit Referee: Scrappy McGowenThe fans are really giving it to Ellering and Duggan before the bell starts. Duggan charges Starbuck and starts to maul the poor youngster and grabs him and throws him threw the middle ropes and out to the floor. Ellering is yelling at the kid to get back in the ring and after a 6 count, Starbuck rolls under the bottom rope, but is caught with a kick straight to his ribs by the much larger Duggan. Duggan is in total control of the match as Starbuck is simply overmatched. Duggan pounds on him for another couple of minutes, just toying with his opponent. Duggan whips Starbuck into the far corner and Starbucks falls to the canvas in a heap. Duggan gets in the 3 point stance and is simply waiting for his man to get up. As soon as Starbuck gets to his feet, Duggan charges him like a bull and nails him with a football tackle. Duggan has knocked his opponent out and all he has to do his put his hand on his chest as McGowen counts to 3.Winner via pin fall, "Hacksaw" Jim DugganGordon Solie: (Ellering yelling in the background as he walks over to the podium) That was an impressive win for your charge there Mr. Ellering.Paul Ellering: You know Gordon Solie, we are starting to prepare for this mans rightful spot as the future National Heavyweight Champion. He has the athletic background that few here have and he is a born winner. He has a mean streak the size of Texas and will go through his opponents like a hot knife through butter. Gordon Solie: He is sure impressive, but now I want to ask you about what happened at the end of last weeks program when you had your Legion of Doom come in and attack Ron Garvin during his title match against another member of your group, Mad Dog" Buzz Sawyer. You tried to put the man out of commission, but from what I've been told, you didn't succeed.Paul Ellering: What do you mean Solie that we didn't succeed? He was the one who needed help getting out of the ring last week and not Buzz Sawyer. We just called that a message that we sent to him and anyone else who wants to be a do-gooder around here.Hacksaw Duggan: That's right Precious Paul, these do-gooders like Stan Hansen, Tommy Rich, Ole Anderson and the rest of the crew in the back. They think that they can get in our way and stop us from getting what we want around here? Think again men. Last week as just a message and we think that it was sent very well. Commercial break: Freddie Miller talking about shows this week in Tallahassee Florida, Wheeling West Virginia, Toledo Ohio, Cincinnati Ohio, Columbus Ohio
Gordon Solie: I have the pleasure of having "Captain Redneck" Dick Murdoch and former Olympian Bob Roop. Gentlemen, welcome.Dick Murdoch: Glad to be here Gordon on the greatest Television station in the land, WTBS.Gordon Solie: I understand that you 2 men have had some issues with The "Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff and The Iron Sheik on tour this past week.Bob Roop: That's correct Gordon. It seems to us that you need to have eyes in the back of your head when you wrestle one of these men, as you never know on when the other will try and stick their nose into the match. It has happened a few times in the past, but this past week it started to become a more and more noticeable. It seems like neither man can wrestle without the other one nearby.Dick Murdoch: That's right Bob, it has become an issue and it's an issue that we will not stand for in this great country of ours! If these 2 "commies" want to try and stick their nose in our business, then that's fine as we will now have each others back as well. Whether it's in Tallahassee or Wheeling or up in Ohio, we will be ready and gentlemen, you better be ready to.The Great Kabuki ( with Gary Hart) vs. Johnny Rich 10 minute time limit Referee: Nick PatrickThis will be a tough test for Kabuki as Johnny Rich is no pushover. The match is even for the first minute or so and Kabuki and manager Hart seem to be getting frustrated. Hart yells something towards Rich and it distracts him long enough for Kabuki to hit him with a karate thrust to the throat. Rich is down and Kabuki starts to attack him with kicks to the neck region and when put a nerve hold on the side of his neck. Rich tries to wrangle his way to the ropes, but Kabuki sees this and hits him with a chop to the back of his neck. Kabuki starts to spin around in a small circle as he waits for Rich to get up and as soon as he does, Kabuki strikes with a karate kick to the side of Riches' temple. Kabuki goes for the cover, but picks him up after the count of 2. Hart is yelling instructions to Kabuki as he puts the nerve hold on again. Rich appears to be in trouble as is on the verge of passing out. Patrick checks on Rich and orders the time keeper to ring the bell and stop the match. Kabuki won't let go of the hold and Patrick starts to count and only when he gets to 4, Kabuki releases the hold. Tommy Rich (Johnny's Cousin) is now in the ring to check on Johnny and yells at Hart to keep Kabuki away. Hart just smiles as he leads Kabuki out of the ring.Winner via referee stoppage, The Great Kabuki
Gordon Solie: At this time I would like to bring out NWA President Bob Geigel as he has a big announcement about the National Heavyweight Championship Tournament.Bob Geigel: Thank you Gordon as it's always a pleasure of mine to come here to speak with you. I do have several announcements. The first is that we will have a 16 man elimination Tournament here at the Omni in Atlanta on Sunday October 30th. I have here a list of the 16 men involved, as they will be coming in from all over the NWA. First is "Playboy" Buddy Rose, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, "Mad Dog" Buzz Sawyer, Ted Dibiase, Great Kabuki, Ivan Koloff, King Kong Bundy, Masked Superstar, Barry Windham, Sweet Brown Sugar, Kerry Von Erich, Tommy Rich, Dick Murdoch, Stan Hansen, Jimmy Valiant, Kerry Von Erich.Gordon Solie: That is quite the list of names, Mr. Geigel. I did notice that the former champion, Larry Zbsyzko isn't in the names of 16.Bob Geigel: Mr. Zbsyzko has been a very popular ( or unpopular) person in the board of governors discussions on who should be in the Tournament. It has been decided that Mr. Zbsyzko should not be rewarded for his behavior as the last champion and as the reason that there needs to be a Tournament to begin with (crowd cheers). Another name missing from the list is Mr. Wrestling II. We have talked to Wrestling II and decided to give him an NWA Heavyweight Championship match with the Champ and an old rival of his Harley Race on the 30th. (crowd cheers) The 30th will be a busy night as the National Tag Team Champions, The Road Warriors will be defending their titles against the team of Bob & Brad Armstrong. Gordon Solie: Wow, it's going to be a star-studded night at the Omni on the 30th. ( crowd starts to boo) Larry Zbsyzko: This has to be some kind of joke Bob Geigel, as not only you ripped me off of MY title, but then you keep me from regaining MY belt! Did Wrestling II bribe you to keep me out of the Tournament? I've always heard that there isn't a bribe that you wouldn't take, Geigel!Gordon Solie: Now Mr. Zbsyzko, those claims are false and you know this.Larry Zbsyzko: Maybe it's you then Solie that is behind all of this ( gets up in Solie's face)Bob Geigel: That's quite enough out of you, Zbsyzko. If you don't watch yourself, you will get the same treatment as your buddy did last week. (Zbsyzko fuming, storms off to the back)
Commercial Break:Sweet Brown Sugar vs. Pat Rose 10 minute time limit Referee: Scrappy McGowenSweet Brown Sugar is getting a nice cheer from the crowd as he is about to lock-up with Mr. Rose. They have a collar and elbow lock-up and Sugar takes Rose down to the canvas with a side headlock. Sugar works on the head and neck for a bit and picks him up off the canvas and whips him into the ropes. Rose comes off and flies through the air from a back body drop. Sugar waits for Rose to get up and takes him down once again with a side headlock. Rose goes for the tights to flip Sugar over, but he can't maintain control and Sugar tightens up even more on the headlock. Rose now goes after the eyes of Sugar and this time is successful in getting Sugar to break the hold. Rose grabs Sugar and whips him into the corner, however, Sugar jumps on the ropes and leaps behind a charging Rose. Rose turns around and Sugar hits his patent dropkick right to the jaw of Rose. Sugar goes for the cover and hooks the leg to get the victory.Winner Sweet Brown Sugar
Commercial Break: Freddie Miller once again talks about World Championship Wrestling being on tour this week.
Gordon Solie: We have a video on an exciting young star coming to World Championship Wrestling and his name is Curt Hennig. VTR of Hennig in action from the Pacific Northwest. Gordon Solie: Now at this time I would like to bring in Ole Anderson as he has a message for someone in particular.Ole Anderson: That's right Gordon, I'm here to challenge Dory & Terry Funk to go against Arn & Myself on the 30th at the Omni to a TEXAS DEATH MATCH. The winner will be the one who can answer the 10 count after a pin fall or submission. Funk, you and your brother Dory have been running down the Anderson name for far too long. His match is a put up or shut up deal with you Funk. Either sign the contract or prove that you are indeed an egg sucking yellow dog. ( crowd cheers) Gordon Solie: This is quite the statement Ole. I think.... (crowd boos, out comes Gary Hart & Terry Funk) Terry Funk: I got this Hart. Ole, how DARE you call me a yellow egg sucking dog! Give me that contract!Gary Hart: I think out lawyers should look at this first Terry. (Funk rips the contract away from Hart and signs it and walks away with Hart) Gordon Solie: (A smiling Ole Anderson shows Solie the contract) I guess that Mr. Funk should've that Mr. Hart look over the contract a bit before signing it.Ole Anderson: Gordon, tell everyone on what it says.Gordon Solie: Well, everything is pretty standard here until we see here that the special guest referee with be none other then the "American Dream", Dusty Rhodes (crowd goes crazy) Oh brother, this will be a barnburner indeed.National Tag Team Champions, The Road Warriors ( with Precious Paul Ellering) vs. Rick Rood & Ken Timbs 10 minute time limit Referee: Nick PatrickHawk & Animal charge the ring and the onslaught begins. Animal throws Timbs to the outside as Hawk roughs up Rood. Hawk bounces Rood off the ropes and Animal hits Rood with a powerslam. Hawk climbs to the top as Animal picks Rood up on his shoulders as Hawk comes down with a flying clothesline. Hawk puts both hands hard onto Rood's chest as Patrick could count to 100 as they get the win.Winners, National Tag Team Champions, The Road Warriors.Commercial break:
Gordon Solie: I have with me the World Television Champion, Ron Garvin. How are you feeling Ron?Ron Garvin: Well, I'm doing alright. They tried to put me out last week, but all they did was give me a headache for a night or 2. Jake Roberts, Buzz Sawyer or any other of Paul Ellering's goons. You will need to do better then that to get this title off of me. You have the numbers at all times, but I also have friends that can watch my back like Tommy Rich, Stan Hansen, Ole Anderson, Bob Armstrong. If it's a fight you want, well then it's a fight you will get.Gordon Solie: Thanks Ron. Now lets get back to the ring. The Masked Superstar vs. Tim Horner 10 minute time limitReferee: Scrappy McGowenThe Masked Superstar is back from a tour of Japan and is looking in peak physical condition. The bell rings and The Superstar takes control early on putting Horner down on the mat after a hip toss. Superstar is working on the neck of Horner, trying to weakening it up. Superstar maneuvers into a front face lock, trying to twist the head off of Horner's neck. Horner makes it to his feet, but the Superstar hits him with a knee to the stomach. Horner is bent over and his allows the Superstar to grab him in a front face lock again and this time he hits Horner with a twisting neck breaker. Horner isn't moving and the Superstar starts to stalk him from behind. Horner shows some movement until the Superstar yanks him up and in one motion applies his dreaded Cobra Clutch on Horner. Horner tries, but quick starts to fade and is out after only 10 seconds in the hold. McGowen calls for the bell and raises the Superstar's arm in victory.Winner via submission, The Masked Superstar
Gordon Solie: That was mighty short work for you Superstar. I heard that you had another successful trip of the orient.Masked Superstar: Correct Solie, it was so successful, that it was almost to easy.Gordon Solie: I guess you heard the words from NWA President Bob Geigel that you will be one of the 16 men involved in the National Heavyweight Championship Tournament on the 30th at the Omni.Masked Superstar: Never a doubt in my mind that I would be in the Tournament. What I however don't understand is why Mr. Wrestling II gets a shot at Harley Race and the Worlds Heavyweight Championship on the same night. If anybody should get the shot, it's me. It doesn't matter on who wins that match as they will have to face me after I win the National Heavyweight title and have it around my waist once again. Commercial break:
Gordon Solie: We only have a few moments left but I would like to bring out Mr. Wrestling II before we close out this broadcast. I would like to congratulate you on your title shot against Harley Race on the 30th. The two of you have quite the history together.Mr. Wrestling II: (crowd chants II, II) Thank you Gordon and yes, we do have a lot of history going against each other. It's going to be a tough match and Race knows that with the fans behind me that I will give it 100%.Gordon Solie: Do you have a prediction on who's going to win the 16 man Tournament?Mr. Wrestling II: It's a real tough one to call. there are so many talented wrestlers from here and coming in from around the country that it's extremely difficult to say right now on who's the favorite. We will just have to wait and see.Gordon Solie: We are out of time and goodbye from the Peach State of Georgia. See you next week!
