The scene is a Hotel room at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Downtown Atlanta in July 1983. 4 men were at a dining roundtable holding a discussion about the future of their company. These men were the owners of Georgia Championship Wrestling, the highest rated Wrestling program in the Country. These are the men. Jack & Jerry Brisco: (Current NWA World Tag Team Champions and own 30% each) Jim Barnett: (Former Promoter and a current 30% owner since 1974) Al Rogowski: (Current Booker and Wrestler and 10% shareholder, better known as Ole Anderson) This meeting was called as they heard through Jack & Jerry Brisco's "Florida" connections, that Hulk Hogan was going to be leaving the AWA and leave promoter Verne Gagne high and dry in late November over a money dispute and the fact that Gagne hasn't yet made him AWA World Heavyweight Champion. Hogan is heading to the World Wrestling Federation in late December for a set of TV Tapings to get him reacquainted with the Northeast fans and to get the "rub" from current Champion Bob Backlund. Promoter Vince McMahon Jr. promised to make Hogan the top guy for the company as he planned on doing the one thing that a promoter had never tried before and that was to take his territory and take it National. McMahon told Hogan that he was going to make him a major mainstream star, as he was starting to buy up other promoter's TV time slots and putting Hogan's face out there to a Nationwide audience. This is what Hogan had always wanted and knew that the AWA couldn't give him if he stayed there. When the Brisco's heard this, they were furious and knew that it went against the silent "code" that a promoter would never cross the line into another ones territory, much less to try and take the company across America. Here is what happened next. Jack Brisco: Jim and Al, Jerry and myself called Watts, Fritz, Owens, Graham and even Jarrett and they are said that to stop McMahon, we need money and unfortunately, we don't have the kind of money. I'm afraid that we might be powerless to stop that SOB from taking over and more importantly, to take over our spot on the Superstation. Jim Barnett: Well boys, I think we should just get out now and sell to him. It would be the best course of actio.... Ole Anderson: The best course of action is to shove it up McMahon's ass. Jack, Jerry, I think that we should fly up to New York and pay McMahon a visit! Barnett: Now Alan my boy, that type of thinking won't get you anywhere in life. Anderson: Jack, did you call Muchnick in St. Louis?
Jack Brisco: I did Al and he thinks the best course of action would be to sell. He thinks that... Anderson: SELL, I'M NOT SELLING TO MCMAHON! Jerry Brisco: He didn't say sell to McMahon, he suggested someone else who we are very familiar with. Anderson: Who does Muchnick mean? Jack Brisco: The man who appreciates us the most, as we are responsible for the highest rated show on his network. Anderson: Turner? Jerry Brisco: Correct, Ted Turner. We have had some preliminary talks already as McMahon has already called Turner several times trying to get our time slot. A couple of WTBS' representatives contacted us 2 weeks ago about the situation and it was brought up to us that Turner didn't like McMahon and wanted to find out if we would want to partner up with him. Barnett: That's marvelous gentleman. That sounds like the prefect solution to this issue. Anderson: Hold on Barnett. Jack, how would this work. Jack Brisco: Al, Turner would essentially buy 50% of Georgia Championship Wrestling and he wants to change the name to World Championship Wrestling. The new name would be easier to market and bring in more revenue to stop McMahon from taking over. If everyone agrees now, we can have the papers drawn up and sent over to the WTBS offices within a week. A sale could be finalized by October 1st. Anderson: What about our positions in the company? Jerry Brisco: We would handle all Wrestling related activity. Alan, you would still be the booker and Jim, you would still be in charger of payroll to the boys. There would be a slight change to the name of the titles as Turner wants the Georgia National & Georgia National Tag Team Championship to be renamed to the National Heavyweight Championship and the National tag Team Championship. They also want to add a new title for TV and name it the National TV Championship. Jack Brisco: We also was told that Turner himself called Bill Watts/Fritz Von Erich/Don Owens/Eddie Graham and Jerry Jarrett asking them if they would lend us talent to stop McMahon and each of them said yes, as long as it was fair for all parties. Anderson: Well Hot Damn! I'm in. How about you Barnett? Jim Barnett: This is a splendid idea and I'm in agreement. Jack & Jerry Brisco: We are in as well. Jim Barnett: What do we tell the Boys? Anderson: We tell them nothing until they need to know. Don't need anything getting back to McMahon. Jack Brisco: Alan's right. We sit tight with this and unveil everything after everything is signed. We will follow Turner's lead on this. PART TWO, THE PRESS CONFERNECE IS NEXT..........

Press Conference at the CNN Center in Atlanta Georgia. Media from all over the world is here to listen to the announcement of Ted Turner getting into the "Rasslin' business. Jim Barnett: Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to the announcement of Ted Turner buying Georgia Championship Wrestling. Georgia Championship Wrestling has been around since 1944 by promoter Paul Jones. We have been on WTBS 17 Superstation since 1976 and has been the top rated program on the Network since it's beginnings. WTBS is in over 50,000,000 households in the Country, making it the largest Cable Network in the World. We are proud that Ted has decided to take Georgia Championship Wrestling to the next step and here is Mr. Turner. Ted Turner: Thank you all for joining us on this momentous day. I have always loved watching Professional Wrestling every since I use to go the local matches with my parents growing up. When I started to go nationwide and was looking for programing, one of the first things I did was to call up the owner of the promotion and I asked if they would have an interest in being part of our programming. Ever since that day, both of our products have grown because of our partnership and I know for a fact that we wouldn't be the Network that we are without our partnership. I recently had the opportunity to jump feet first into Pro Wrestling when an offer came over my desk and it was really a no-brainer for me. With Jim Barnett who is to my right as my right hand man, I feel that we will grow as a company as we prepare to spread our wings as an organization. After the National Wrestling Alliance approved the sale, they told us that they want us to be the flagship promotion of the organization. Stars from all over the Alliance will appear on our program and appear at a town near you. We will also be adding a few wrestlers to our already impressive roster that we already have. I will let Jim handle the rest of the press conference. Thank you all for being here. Jim Barnett: Any questions from the Wrestling Media? Bill Apter ( Pro Wrestling Illustrated): Who are the wrestlers that will appear in Georgia Championship Wrestling? Jim Barnett: Bill, we forgot to add that we will be changing our name officially from Georgia Championship Wrestling to World Championship Wrestling. The following wrestlers will be appearing on a regular basis. Larry Zbyszko ( National Heavyweight Champion) The Road Warriors ( National Tag Team Champions) Ron Garvin ( World Television Champion) Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer Tommy Rich Joe Lightfoot Pez Whatley Iron Sheik Brett Wayne Bob Roop Dick Murdoch Mr. Wrestling II Ole Anderson Killer Brooks Arn Anderson Ivan Koloff Paul Orndorff Tony Atlas Johnny Rich Les Thornton Stan Hansen King Kong Bundy Ted Dibiase Matt Borne Jake Roberts Pat Rose Hacksaw Butch Reed Masked Superstar Super Destroyer Brad Armstrong Bob Armstrong Tommy Rogers Mike Jackson Chick Donovan Abdullah The Butcher Great Kabuki Tom Pritchard The Moondogs Mike Starbuck Rick Rood Bulldog Bob Brown Randy Barber Sweet Brown Sugar Ken Timbs Jim Barnett: Adding to these wrestlers, we have acquired the services of the following wrestlers. "Bad" Leroy Brown Jimmy Valiant "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan "Playboy" Buddy Rose "The Crippler" Rip Oliver Bruiser Brody Kerry Von Erich "Rowdy" Roddy Piper "Hangman" Bobby Jaggers Tim Horner "Gorgeous" Gino Hernandez Curt Hennig Barry Windham Dory Funk Jr. Terry Funk Jim Barnett: Any other questions? Matt Brock ( Inside Wrestling): It was said earlier that you were going to be the flagship promotion of the NWA. What does that exactly mean? Jim Barnett: Well Matt my boy, this means that we will be traveling all over the country, working with the other promoters of the NWA. We will hold joint cards together and wrestlers from the other promotions will also come to World Championship Wrestling and appear on our programming to show everyone of their talents. This means that you will see the NWA World's Heavyweight Champion Harley Race, The US Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine, The NWA World Tag Team Champions Jack & Jerry Brisco more frequently. This will allow everyone to be united as one and hold "Super cards" and allowing the fans to see the best wrestling in the world, the NWA.

WTBS Studios: October 2, 1983
VTR showing NWA President Bob Geigel is at the desk with Gordon Solie and National Heavyweight Champion Larry Zbyszko and henchman "Killer" Tim Brooks telling them that is Brooks interferes in any more of Zbyszko's matches, that Zbyszko would be stripped on the Championship and that Brooks will be terminated.
Gordon Solie: Welcome to the Peach State of Georgia for another episode of World Championship Wrestling. This week, we will see such stars as the National Heavyweight Champion Larry Zbyszko, World TV Champion Ron Garvin, Brett Wayne, "Mad Dog" Buzz Sawyer, Ole Anderson and much more. Lets get to the ring for our first bout.Jake Roberts ( With "Precious" Paul Ellering) vs. Randy Barber 10 minute time limit. Referee: Nick PatrickAs soon as the bell rings, Roberts charges Barber and knocks Barber into the corner. Roberts pounds away on Barber's torso with Knees and elbows. Roberts whips Barber into the far turnbuckle and back body drops his opponent. Roberts is attacking Barber with even more of a vicious streak then he usually has. Roberts beats on Barber for a few more minutes with a various arrays of Suplexes, elbows and knees. Barber is flat of his back when Jake pulls Barber up and wraps his arm around Barber's head and crashes Barber head first into the canvas with his DDT. Ellering is elated outside the ring and Roberts has a sick smile on his face as all he has to do now is simply roll Barber onto his back and cover him for the pin. Jake hooks the leg to get the easy 3 count.Winner: Jake Roberts
Gordon Solie: That was an impressive win gentlemen.Paul Ellering: Gordon Solie, this is just an example of what Mr. Roberts has planned for everyone here. Ron Garvin, we haven't forgot about how you stole this man's TV Championship. If I was a betting man, I would bet that this man right here will regain the belt that is rightfully his.Jake Roberts: That's right Paul. Garvin you think that you out foxed the fox didn't you? Well, after a few weeks off and clearing my head, I have come up with many devious ways of beating you into submission. Garvin, if I was you, I would sleep with eyes in the back of your head, as you never know on when a snake will strike. (Ellering & Roberts laughing)Commercial break: Freddie Miller telling everyone about their upcoming in Macon, Columbus, Augusta, Marietta GeorgiaNational Heavyweight Champion Larry Zbyszko ( with Killer Brooks) vs. Mike Jackson 10 minute time limit.Referee: Scrappy McGowenZbyszko is telling the crowd that he's still the champ despite the fact that Brett Wayne & Mr. Wrestling II tried to steal the belt from him. Zbyszko does his usual stalling tactics to try and get under the Alabama Junior Heavyweight champion's skin, but it doesn't faze the veteran Jackson. They finally tie up and neither man can get the advantage as Jackson is too quick for Zbyszko. Brooks jumps yells something at Jackson and this allows Zbyszko to place a running knee into Jackson's back and he crumbles to the mat. Zbyszko use some amateur wrestling to wear down to lighter opponent. Larry works on the arm with several variations to wear down the shoulder. The Champ is feeling confident and pulls Jackson up and delivers a beautiful standing suplex. Larry climbs to the 2nd rope and drops down with a knee across the injured shoulder of Jackson. Zbyszko picks his man up and drops him down shoulder first onto his knee. He covers and gets the pinfall.Winner: National Heavyweight Champion Larry Zbyszko
Gordon Solie: ( Waves to Zbyszko & Brooks) Gentlemen, come on over please. I would like to bring out the NWA President Bob Geigel. Mr Geigel, I understand you have a few things to say to Mr Zbyszko & Mr. Brooks. Bob Geigel: Thank you Gordon. As all of you know, I was here several weeks ago to tell you that if Killer Brooks continued to interfere in your matches Mr. Zbyszko, that you would have to face the consequences. As you know Gordon, there was a match last Sunday at the Omni here in Atlanta involving Mr. Zbyszko defending his National heavyweight Championship against Brett Wayne. Here is a VTR clip of the ending. VTR shows after a ref bump and both Zbyszko & Wayne on the canvas. Mr. Wrestling II is checking on the referee and is clocked from behind by Brooks with a chair. Brooks then climbs to the turnbuckle and drops down using his Texas Compactor leg drop right across the throat of Wayne, knocking him out. Brooks tapes Zbyszko, who goes over to cover Wayne as Brooks waKes up the referee. Zbyszko drapes his arm across Wayne as the referee counts to 3.
Bob Geigel: You were warned and now you will pay the price. Mr. Zbyszko, please hand over your Championship belt as you have been stripped due to last Sunday's actions. (studio audience goes crazy and Zbyszko & Brooks are waving their arms pleading with Geigel) Larry Zbyszko: Geigel, you are over stepping your bounds here. You can't do this, I refuse to give up this title.Bob Geigel: Mr. Zbyszko, if you don't hand over the belt now, you will be suspended for 1 year from the NWA. Also Mr. Brooks, you are now fired from World Championship Wrestling due to your actions. ( studio audience erupts!) Larry Zbyszko: But, but, but... ( He hands over the title and both Zbyszko & Brooks storm off)Bob Geigel: Gordon, I will let everyone the details next week about a tournament after meeting with the board of directors this week. All I do know that it will be held at the next Omni card on the Sunday October 25th. Gordon Solie: Well, thank you Mr. Geigel for the big announcement and we will be looking forward hearing from you next week.Commercial break: Freddie Miller hyping up the upcoming shows this week.
Gordon Solie: It's been quite an hour already and right now I have Tommy "Wildfire" Rich with me. ( Girls go wild!) Tommy Rich: How are all my Georgia Peaches out here! ( Girls chant, "Ain't no way you can't beat Tommy, ain't no way") Gordon, that was some quite of news that we have just heard. Zbyszko finally got his and I'm going to be the first one to throw my hat into the ring for the upcoming tournament.Gordon Solie: Tommy, you have had your hands full lately with Gary Hart and his men, more specifically, Ted Dibiase.Tommy Rich: That's right Gordon, Dibiase has been a thorn in my side and when I have him beat, it's either the Funks, Kabuki or even Hart himself getting involved. It's time for me to have someone watch my back, because when it's 2,3,4 and even 5 on 1, no one can overcome those odds.Gordon Solie: Thanks Tommy and lets get back to the ring.Ole Anderson vs. Mike Starbuck 10 minute time limit. Referee: Scrappy McGowenThe bell rings and Ole goes right for a double leg takedown and drives Starbuck to the mat. Ole applies various hammerlocks and armbars for the next several minutes to weaken his foe. Starbuck eventually makes it to the ropes and we get a clean break. Ole then dives at Starbuck's legs again and takes him down to go to work on the arm some more. Anderson is wrenching it pretty hard and Starbuck is really grimacing in pain. Anderson then stands up and does a double stomp onto Starbuck's arm. he then hits him with a scoop slam and climbs to the top rope. Anderson waits for the right moment and jumps knee first into the back of Starbuck's injured wing. Ole grabs the arm and really starts to twist away and Starbuck screams I give up. Winner via Submission: Ole Anderson
Gordon Solie: Ole, another fine win for you.Ole Anderson: Thanks Gordon. I was listening to Tommy when he was out here and if he needs someone to watch his back against Gary Hart and his people, then he has an ally in me. Arn, and Myself have had issues with the Funks and Kabuki, so it definitely makes sense to start to watch out for each other. Gordon Solie: One last thing Ole, what do you think about the stripping of Larry Zbyszko and the National Heavyweight title?Ole Anderson: It wasn't like Zbyszko wasn't warned before. It was a great decision by Geigel and I'm looking forward to see what's next.Commercial break
Gordon Solie: Welcome to the 2nd hour of World Championship Wrestling. I have with me right now Brett Wayne and Mr. Wrestling II. Gentlemen.Brett Wayne: Thank you Mr. Solie, as you can all see, I don't have the National heavyweight title with me, but neither does Larry Zbyszko. It all caught up to him and now, he has no title, no more Killer Brooks and who knows if he will even be allowed in the tournament at the end of the month.Mr. Wrestling II: Gordon, to say that I'm not happy is an understatement. I'm upset that young Mr. Wayne didn't win the title, but it wasn't for the lack of effort. If it wasn't for a chair, Brett would be the champion standing here. I am ecstatic beyond words that Zbyszko finally got what was coming to him and it is extra sweet that his henchman/bodyguard is gone for good. I'm also curious to see what Bob Geigel has instore for the tournament. Gordon Solie: Thank you gentlemen, now back to the ring. Iron Sheik & Ivan Koloff vs. Johnny Rich & Joe Lightfoot 15 minute time limit.Referee: Nick PatrickIt's Koloff & Lightfoot to start the match. Collar & elbow tie up and Koloff pushes Lightfoot to the ropes, Koloff hits Lightfoot with a forearm and take him over with a snap mare. Koloff works a chinlock for a bit and then takes Lightfoot off the mat and makes a tag to the Iron Sheik. Sheik kicks Lightfoot in the stomach with the point of his boot, which doubles over Lightfoot. The Sheik grabs his man and slams him to the mat with a side suplex. Sheik goes right to work on the back and neck region of Lightfoot, putting him in various stretches. Lightfoot finally is able to make it to the ropes and Sheik lets go at the count of 4. Lightfoot is able to make it to his corner and tags in Johnny Rich. Rich goes onto the attack for a minute or so, until another well placed boot his time, floors Rich. Sheik picks up Rich and throws him to his corner and tags in Koloff. The Russian Bear gouges Rich's eyes and hits an elbow to the back to his head. Koloff lifts Rich up for a vertical suplex and goes for the cover, but can only get 2. Koloff then proceeds to choke Rich and breaks when he gets to 4. Koloff & Sheik then tag in and out several times and Rich is about done. The Sheik has Rich on his stomach and sits down and applies the Camel Clutch. Rich gives up in moments. Winner via Submission: Ivan Koloff & Iron Sheik
Commercial break: Freddie Miller going over this weeks upcoming schedule.
Gordon Solie: (chorus of boos) I have now with me Gary Hart, Ted Dibiase, Terry Funk. What's on your minds, gentlemen? Gary Hart: So, we now have Ole Anderson & Tommy Rich out here crying that they can't beat us? Maybe you don't have the guts to beat us. Maybe you are simply not talented enough to beat us. The only time my men get involved is when the officials are cheating to turn the tide towards you in a match. Have anything to say Teddy?Ted Dibiase: Well put Gary, well put. Rich, you have never been in the class of me, or Gary Hart or Terry Funk. We have some matches coming up this week in Macon and Marietta, so I'm sure after this week, you will be up here again crying on National TV saying that you can't beat us.Terry Funk: Ole Anderson. You and that cousin Arn or even your brother Gene could never compare to the Funk Family. Hell, the Anderson's could never lace up our boots. Maybe you get drag that goofy brother Gene out of retirement and we can have an 3 on 2 handicap match, so Dory & Me can retire the 3 of you for good. (all 3 men laugh) Gordon Solie: (Looking disgusted) Thank you for your time.Commercial break: Freddie Miller going over the cards in Macon, Columbus, Augusta & Marietta this week.
Gordon Solie: Next is our World TV Title match. Lets get back to the ring.World TV Title: Ron Garvin (C) vs. "Mad Dog" Buzz Sawyer ( With "Precious" Paul Ellering) 20 minute time limit. Referee: Nick PatrickGarvin hands Referee Nick Patrick the title and both Sawyer & Ellering are saying that the belt is going home with them. The bell rings and both wrestlers are cautious early on. Neither man can get the advantage as Ellering is jawing at Garvin telling him the the clock is ticking. This gives Sawyer an opening as Garvin looks over one too many times at Ellering and Sawyer catches Garvin with a forearm to the side of the head, which startles the Champ and Sawyer takes Garvin to the mat. Sawyer works on the neck of Garvin, trying to soften him up. Garvin surprises Sawyer when he is able to roll through an armbar attempt and takes control of Sawyer's arm with a hammerlock. Commercial break:Garvin has Sawyer against the ropes and hits him hard in the chest with an open hand chop. Garvin takes a stunned Sawyer over with a snap mare and stretches Sawyer's arms out while pounding on the wide open chest of Sawyer. Sawyer's chest is really red now and Garvin picks him up and sends him to the canvas with a vertical suplex. There is now 5 minutes left in the contest as takes his man down again with a hanging neck breaker. Garvin starts to twist away at Sawyer's neck as Ellering is yelling at his charge to get up. Sawyer is frantically trying to get loose and finally does with a rake of Garvin's eyes. Sawyer starts to kick and stomp at the blinded champion and Garvin is starting to get disoriented and is staggering near the ropes. Sawyer grabs Garvin and whips him off the ropes and hits a spinning powerslam and goes for the cover. Ellering already has his hands in the air and yells to Gordon Solie that there is a new champion. Sawyer crawls over and hooks the far leg. Patrick counts 1,2,,,KICK OUT. Sawyer looks astonished and Ellering throws his arms down, shaking his head. Sawyer goes for another cover and the bell rings before Patrick can count to 1. Sawyer then proceeds to choke and rip at Garvin's eyes. Ellering waves his arms as Jake Roberts, Hacksaw Duggan & The Road Warriors hit the ring. Ellering throws a chair into the ring as Hawk throws Referee Patrick to the outside. The beat on Garvin and Roberts sets the chair down and places Garvin where he wants him. He is ready to hit the DDT until the studio starts to cheer as Ole Anderson, Tommy Rich & Stan Hansen hit the ring. Hansen has his bull rope and Ellering and his men hastily leave the ring. All 3 men check on Garvin.Gordon Solie: It was good to see the cavalry come to the ring just in time before Garvin got really seriously injured. (TV pans to the ring as Garvin is helped up by Anderson/Rich/Hansen and helped out of the ring) I have here with me Bob Armstrong. You and your son Brad, will be facing the National Tag Teams Champions, The Road Warriors this week.Bob Armstrong: It's a shame that such a fine match got ruined by Ellering and his goons. Garvin had Sawyer on the ropes and as usual, Ellering's men had to get involved and tried to take Ronnie out. Jake Roberts' plan I guess didn't work as he was able to make it to the back under his own power. As for the Road Warriors, Brad & myself are ready and you men better be prepared for the fights of your lives, as we will be up to the challenge.
