Now I do realize that in 2002, the NWA World Heavyweight Championship was TNA's #1 championship, however, in this alternate universe, when the company was founded, they created their own championship and this is the history of that very championship.

The Beginning of a New Era (2002 - 2004)Early in TNA's days, they held weekly pay-per-views rather than weekly television shows and on the first show on June 19, 2002, Ken Shamrock outlasted 9 other competitors in a Gauntlet for the Gold match to become the first ever TNA World Champion.
Shamrock would engage in a heated rivalry with TNA founder Jeff Jarrett who would win the championship under mischievous circumstances on the October 2, 2002 edition of TNA on PPV. The next week, on October 9, 2002, Ken Shamrock would regain the championship in a steel cage match.
Ken Shamrock's reign as the TNA World Champion would continue through January 2003 when he would be defeated by Syxx-Pac who would claim his first World title with the win at the January 22, 2003 TNA event. Shamrock would subsequently retire from pro wrestling after the loss.
Syxx-Pac's reign would be an interesting one as he would no-show several events before being stripped of the title and released from the company on March 1, 2003.
At the March 5, 2003 event, 4 days after the title being vacated, AJ Styles became the new champion, winning a one night, 8 man tournament. Styles would hold the championship until the June 25, 2003 event, where Raven would become the new champion, defeating Styles in a street fight.
Raven's reign was a lengthy one that included feuds with Ron Killings, AJ Styles, D-Lo Brown and Shane Douglas. His biggest challenge came in the form of Jeff Jarrett who he would feud with for several months, however, he held onto the belt through January of 2004.
Raven's reign came to an end on February 4, 2004 when "The Monster" Abyss destroyed him in a Monsters' Ball match to become the new champion. Abyss and Father James Mitchell reigned over TNA for months until he came up against the returning Ken Shamrock on the July 14, 2004 TNA event and Shamrock would defeat him to win the championship for a third time.
Shamrock's 3rd reign would not last long as Jeff Jarrett defeated him on the final TNA weekly PPV event on September 8, 2004 and he would hold it throughout the remainder of 2004.

Hotshotting All Around (2005)2005 was a year unlike any other in TNA as it was the transition to monthly pay-per-views rather than weekly and at the February 13, 2005 Against All Odds PPV, Monty Brown won the championship in a lengthy match against Jeff Jarrett.
A month later at the March 13, 2005 Destination X pay-per-view, Diamond Dallas Page shocked the world to become the new TNA World Champion when he defeated Monty Brown, but later in the night, Jeff Jarrett would win the championship for a 3rd time, cutting DDP's reign very short.
At the May 15, 2005 edition of Hard Justice, Jeff Hardy defeated Jeff Jarrett in a ladder match to become the new champion. Hardy would lose the title back to Jeff Jarrett on the May 19, 2005 episode of Impact.
At Slammiversary on June 19, 2005, AJ Styles won a King of the Mountain match to become the new champion, dethroning Jeff Jarrett. Styles would feud with Jarrett, Jeff Hardy and Rhino which he would retain the title at all pay-per-views he defended at.
AJ Styles' reign as champion was one of the longest of the year until it was ended by Sting at November 13, 2005 edition of the Genesis pay-per-view and he would hold the title throughout the remainder of the year.

2006 - 2007Sting's reign didn't last too long into the new year as Christian Cage shocked the world and defeated Sting to win his first World Championship with the help of Tyson Tomko at the January 15, 2006 Final Resolution event. Cage's reign lasted for several months as he defended against the likes of Sting, AJ Styles, Jeff Jarrett and Monty Brown. At the June 18, 2006 edition of Slammiversary, Ron Killings became the new champion after winning the King of the Mountain match, however, his reign would be short lived as he would suffer an injury on July 1, 2006 causing him to vacate the championship. As the championship was now vacated, Management Director Jim Cornette announced a tournament that would conclude at Victory Road. In the end, it was Samoa Joe who won the tournament and the vacate championship on July 16, 2006 after dominating all other challengers. His reign would continue for several months as he fended off all challengers without much of a challenge. As his reign continued throughout the remainder of 2006, we saw the debut of Kurt Angle in TNA who would challenge Samoa Joe but lose every time until agreeing to put his career on the line for the championship. At the February 11, 2007 Against All Odds event, Kurt Angle finally overcame Samoa Joe to become the new TNA World Champion, saving his career in the process. Angle would then embark on a feud with Jeff Jarrett, which he would be victorious in. On September 9, 2007 at the No Surrender pay-per-view, Christian Cage would be successful in defeating Kurt Angle to win his second TNA World Championship, a title he would shockingly lose to Tyson Tomko on the September 13, 2007 episode of Impact. On the September 20, 2007 episode of Impact, Sting would regain the championship after winning at triple threat match featuring Tyson Tomko and Christian Cage. Sting would hold championship through the end of the year. TNA World Championship HistoryKen Shamrock (June 19, 2002 - October 2, 2002) [106 days]

2008 - 2010Following a lengthy reign and lengthy feud, Christopher Daniels would become the new TNA World Champion, defeating Sting on May 11, 2008 at the Sacrifice pay-per-view. At the June 8, 2008 Slammiversary event, Robert Roode would become champion for the first time, winning the annual King of the Mountain match. Roode would embark on feuds with Sting, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe and AJ Styles, all of which he would be successful in as he would hold the championship throughout the remainder of 2008. As 2009 began, it appeared as though Robert Roode would continue to hold the championship for quite sometime and that came true as he held it throughout the majority of the first half of 2009. At the June 21, 2009 edition of Slammiversary, Jay Lethal would end Robert Roode's year long reign by winning the annual King of the Mountain match to become the new champion. The win shocked many. 2 months later at the August 16, 2009 Hard Justice pay-per-view, Robert Roode would regain the championship by defeating Jay Lethal in a 30 minute Iron Man match, a match that would be named Match of the Year. After winning the Bound for Glory series, Hernandez became the new TNA World Champion, defeating Robert Roode in the main event of the October 18, 2009 Bound for Glory event. Robert Roode did not give up his relentless pursuit of the championship and regained it at the December 20, 2009 edition of the Final Resolution pay-per-view, defeating Hernandez in a tense match to become champion for the 3rd time. On April 18, 2010 at the Lockdown pay-per-view, Desmond Wolfe would become the TNA World Champion by defeating Robert Roode in a six sides of steel match. Wolfe's reign would be a pretty uneventful one that would be ended on August 8, 2010 at Hardcore Justice when Robert Roode would become the champion for the 4th time, a title he would hold for the remainder of 2010.

2011 - 2014Robert Roode's reign as champion would continue into 2011 as he would fend off Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles as challengers before losing the title on March 13, 2011 to Kurt Angle at Victory Road.
Angle's reign would extend into the summer of 2011 when Jay Lethal would become a 2 time champion by winning a fatal four way match at the September 11, 2011 No Surrender pay-per-view. Lethal would hold the championship throughout the remainder of 2011, defeating AJ Styles, Jeff Jarrett, Rhino, Kurt Angle and Robert Roode in several feuds.
Lethal's reign would come to an end in early 2012 when James Storm would defeat him to become champion at the February 12, 2012 Against All Odds pay-per-view. Storm would only hold the championship for 3 days as Austin Aries would cash in his Feast or Fired briefcase to become the new champion on February 15, 2012.
Aries' reign would end in shocking fashion as Samoa Joe would demolish him to win his first championship in almost 6 years on July 8, 2012 at the Destination X pay-per-view. Joe would go on a tear throughout the entire TNA roster, defeating anyone that got in his way. He would hold the championship for the remainder of 2012 and for nearly the entire year of 2013.
At the October 20, 2013 edition of Bound for Glory, Lashley would make his return to TNA and defeat Samoa Joe to become the new TNA World Champion, a victory that would shock the world as Joe held the title for so long.
At Lockdown on March 9, 2014, Samoa Joe once again became the new TNA World Champion, defeating Lashley and Kurt Angle in a triple threat six sides of steel match. Joe would once again tear through the roster defeating all comers.
In what was considered one of the most shocking upsets of all time, Jessie Godderz defeated Samoa Joe on December 23, 2014 to become the new TNA World Champion as 2015 began.

2015 - 2020Jessie Godderz's reign as the champion lasted merely a month as he would suffer an injury on January 23, 2015 and be forced to vacate his championship. Following a tournament, it would be Robert Roode who would become the champion for the 5th time, the most in history up until this point. He would win it on February 19, 2015.
At the June 28, 2015 edition of Slammiversary, Drew Galloway would win his first World Championship by defeating Roode in a match that would later be declared the match of the year. Galloway would hold the championship for a very long time as no one would be worthy of becoming the champion in a period of downturn for the company.
After holding the title for well over a year, Galloway would lose the title on October 2, 2016 at Bound for Glory when Mike Bennett stepped up and was successful in winning the championship. He would hold the championship for several months before Drew Galloway would win it back on March 3, 2017.
Following another lengthy reign, Galloway would lose the title for the second year in a row at Bound for Glory on November 5, 2017, this time to Lashley. Galloway would subsequently leave the company and return to the WWE.
In his TNA debut, Pentagon, Jr. would defeat Lashley on April 22, 2018 at the Redemption pay-per-view event but he would not hold it for long as he would soon vacate it to head back to Mexico on May 28, 2018.
On July 22, 2018, Brian Cage would win a star-studded Gauntlet for the Gold match to become the new TNA World Champion. A title he would hold throughout the remainder of the year and for the majority of the year 2019.
On October 20, 2019 at Bound for Glory, wrestling legend Ken Shamrock would make a shocking return to TNA to defeat Brian Cage and end his reign as the TNA World Champion. Shamrock would hold the championship for the remainder of 2019.
At Hard to Kill on January 12, 2020, Sami Callihan would unseat Ken Shamrock to become the new TNA World Champion, a title he would hold for most of the year 2020.
Following years of dedicated service to TNA, Eric Young would become the final TNA World Champion, defeating Sami Callihan on October 24, 2020 at Bound for Glory.
