Main Event - Bruno Sammartino vs Killer Kowalski - WWWF World Heavyweight Title Match [87]
In what has been dubbed, ''The Last Chapter'', Killer Kowalski looks at this match as a final attempt in defeating longtime rival, Bruno Sammartino, to finally capture the WWWF World Heavyweight title. Kowalski seems highly motivated as he outwrestles the champion in the opening minutes to gain the advantage. Bruno goes for an attempted powerslam but Kowalski slips out and delivers a punch square in the jaw. The challenger launches Bruno in to the corner and lands a number of strikes. Kowalski irish whips Sammartino to the far corner but the ''Italian Superman'' springs out and unleashes with a flurry of offence. A fisherman suplex sees Bruno attempt the pinfall - One...Two...Kick Out by Kowalski.
Killer Kowalski reverses a strike from Bruno Sammartino and delivers one of his own. The two trade blows until Bruno clotheslines Kowalski over the top rope. Freddie Blassie grips his client on the outside telling him he needs to ''destroy'' Bruno Sammartino. Fired up, Kowalski gets back in to the ring and ducks under an attack, hitting a high knee to take control. A grounded sleeper from the challenger seeks out a submission victory but the passion of the crown urge Sammartino back to his feet. Bruno delivers some elbows to the gut to break the hold before levelling Kowalski with a clothesline.
Both men rise and trade heavy punches in which Bruno Sammartino walks away on top. A powerslam leaves Kowalski laid out on the ground but a missed leg drop stuns the momentum of the champion. Another sleeper is attempted from Killer Kowalski but Sammartino wriggles out of it with ease. Sammartino attempts a powerslam but Kowalski avoids and pushes Sammartino in to referee, Dick Woehrle. A low blow leaves Sammartino struggling down on the ground with his title reign now in serious danger. Freddie Blassie slides his cane in to the ring for Kowalski to retrieve which he thrwarts Sammartino around the face with. Kowalski goes for the cover forcing a second referee, Dick Kroll, to sprint to the ring to count to fall - One...Two...Kick Out! Miraculously, Bruno Sammartino survives.
Stunned at ringside, Freddie Blassie calls for the Claw. Killer Kowalski lines it up but Bruno Sammartino blocks the attack and locks in a bearhug. The pain on Kowalski's face is visibly seen, and in sheer desperation, he delivers some elbows to the forehead of Sammartino. However, Bruno remains resilient and doesn't allow the strikes to affect him and instead, lock the bearhug in even tighter. This causes Kowalski to stop the attack and begin to fade. On the the edge of passing out, Killer Kowalski decides to tap out after 13:32 meaning Bruno Sammartino retains his title, cementing himself back at the top of the tree.
