Week 4, February 1997
Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Attendance: 14,187
Announcers: Jim Ross and Vince McMahon
Preshow
Match 1: Cibernetico vs Hector Garza
Basic match to start off the show. Unfortunately, two unknown Mexican talents didn’t really set the house of fire. Both wrestlers certainly are talented but the fact that nobody knew who they were, and the fact that the match meant nothing meant now excitement. Cibernetico wins via pinfall.
Winner: Cibernetico
Rating: 2/10
Match: The Hardy Boys vs The New Blackjacks
The Hardy Boys got a nice pop when it was announced they were from North Carolina. Decent match between these two teams. Windham's leadership really carried the match. New Blackjacks won this one after Blackjack Bradshaw pinned Matt Hardy for the three count.
Winner: The New Blackjacks
Rating: 5/10
Main Card
Opener: Mabel w/Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs Bart Gunn
Match was more open then one would expect, however, Mabel did come out looking angry. Hunter also did a great job on the side antagonizing the crowd and barking orders at Mabel in the ring. Mabel eventually gets Gunn in a sleeper holder of some sort and makes Bart tap out.
Winner: Mabel

After the match we cut to the backstage area where Crush is hanging out with J.C. Ice and Wolfie D. Out of nowhere Faarooq barges in and attacks Ice and Wolfie D. Crush stand back as his Nation leader manhandles PG-13. After the massive beatdown Faarooq looks over at Crush and yells at him. “You are to never speak with these two again...Let’s go”. Faarooq and Crush leave the room but before Crush can leave he looks back at the carnage left behind, and takes one last moment to look at his two former friends.
Rating: 5/10
We cut to the parking lot area where we see Backlund, Iron Sheik and Fatu walking into the arena. Dox Hendrix tries to get a word in with any of the three men but they simply keep walking.
Rating: 6/10
Camera goes back to the locker room area where we see medical staff and Jesse James checking on PG-13. James and the medical staff tell PG-13 to stay still and not move. One staff member says “I think we are going to have to bring them to the hospital for X-Rays”
Rating: 4/10
Match 2: Flash Funk and Marc Mero w/Sable vs Honky Tonk Man and Jerry “The King” Lawler
Nothing special to say about this match. Funk and Mero looked great out there, and Lawler’s veteran leadership allowed him to keep up with the two high flying stars. Honky Tonk Man though was clearly 2 to 3 steps behind everyone else. Funk and Mero pick up the win after Mero hits the Shooting Star Press on Honky Tonk Man.
Winner: Flash Funk and Marc Mero
Rating: 5/10
Ahmed is seen backstage pacing around. He looks over at the camera and starts to yell at Faarooq.
“Faarooq, I can tell I am getting to you. Your Nation is falling and before you know it, you will be the only one left. Faarooq, let me give you some advice though. If you want your Nation to stay strong, you can’t go around attacking your followers.” Ahmed talks a little bit more about how Faarooq is going down and how he will get revenge from Faarooq’s cheap win at Rage in a Cage. Decent segment, although I was a little confused. Why would Ahmed be giving Faarooq advice? Poor writing in my opinion.
Rating: 7/10
We come back from a commercial break where we see D’Lo Brown, the newest member of the Nation of Domination. D’Lo talks about how he heard what Ahmed said before the commercial break and he is disgusted with what he had to say. “Faarooq leads by example. He proved he was a leader at Rage in a Cage when he beat you...so I will prove to him that I am worthy of being in The Nation. Ahmed, I want you next week on Superstars, One on One.” The screen then switches to a split screen where Ahmed is seen again, still in the backstage spot he was at. Ahmed tells D’Lo Brown “If you want a match, you got it.” Decent segment. D’Lo is basically an unknown, but throwing him in a match with Ahmed will certainly help him become more credible.
Rating: 5/10
Main Event: Fatu w/The Iron Sheik vs Savio Vega
No Backlund at ringside for this match for some reason. Pretty straight forward match where Fatu simply dominated the Puerto Rican Star. Iron Sheik looked great at ringside but Fatu didn’t need his help to pick up the easy victory. A lot of the match was Jim Ross and Vince McMahon going over what happened last Sunday at Rage in a Cage where The Sultan revealed himself to be Fatu.
Winner: Fatu
Rating: 5/10
After the match we see Backlund come down to the ring to raise Fatu’s arm. Sheik and Backlund raise Fatu’s arm when Rocky Maivia comes out with a microphone. Vince McMahon at the announcing table reminds us that Rocky and Fatu are cousins. Rocky hangs back at the top of the ramp and asks Fatu some questions
“Why did you do it Cuz? Why the beatdown after our match a month ago, why the whole Sultan get up and why did you pair yourself up with those two? You're better than this Fatu” Fatu raises the microphone to his mouth. He does a little laugh on the side before he begins to speak.
“I am better than this? Better than what Rock? Better than sitting in the back watching people with ½ my talent get more air time? Better than driving hours every night to get to the next event, just to be told that I wasn’t wrestling? Nah cuz, your right, I am better than that, which is why I had to show it. You see, I was tired of sitting in the back and I got to talking with Sheik and Backlund here. They made me realize that my time in the WWF was coming to an end. WWF got what they wanted out of me. First WWF dressed me up like some wild jungle man. They told me that will get me on TV. When the fans got bored of that they told me to ‘become a role model’ and that will get me on TV...and then the fans got bored of that too. So there I was, sitting in the back when these two men, Bob Backlund and Iron Sheik...my REAL family, saved me. They took me under their wing and they made me realize that if I didn’t take control of my future, I would have no future. So we created a plan, no more gimmicks, no more pretending I am someone I am not. It was time to show the real Fatu...but to do that...I needed to fake it one more time, and The Sultan was born. You see, they wouldn’t give Fatu another shot on TV, but when Bob and Sheik brought in a over 400lb Sultan...well of course they would give him some air time. So I played the part, and let me tell you, I played the part damn well. No longer did I have to pretend to be anyone I wasn’t. The only thing I had to do was go in this ring, and beat the crap out of anyone who stood in my way. Sure, I am not really some rich Sultan, but man...that was the realest I have ever been here. So I continued to play the part, and I played the part until it was time to reveal who was really behind that mask...and by that point, it was too late. They can’t ask me to be someone I am not anymore. You have all seen the real Fatu. a 425 pound ass kicker.”
Rocky lifts the microphone and begins to speak. “Cuz, you have to stop lying to yourself. This isn’t you…”
But before Rocky can continue, Fatu cuts him off. “Stop lying to myself? Rocky, stop lying to yourself. Look at you...look at what you become. They don’t want the real you...nah cuz, they want Rocky Maivia...Third Generation Wrestler. Hell, they don’t even want to use your real name. They want your father’s first name and your grandfather’s last name, because to them...that's all you are.”
At this time Vince McMahon does mention to the audience at home that the name Rocky Mavia was Rocky’s idea and no WWF official forced him to use the name of his father and grandfather.
Fatu continues, “Rock, you can stand there and judge me all you want...but I will tell you one thing. If you think you are going to make it in the WWF by being their yes man...your in a world of hurt. The WWF will never accept you. Look at you and then look at who their champions are. The tag champs are pretty white boys. The Intercontinental Champion is a pretty white boy. The WWF Champion is a pretty white boy. Rock...im tired of waiting for my shot. The WWF knows who they want and it ain’t us. So if they aren’t going to give me a fair shot in this company...I will just take it...and so should you.
Fatu drops the microphone as the camera cuts to Rocky Maivia, who is standing there speechless. Vince McMahon goes on the defensive, explaining that in the WWF everyone has a fair shot at all the titles.
Pretty good segment. Enjoyed seeing this new side of Fatu and I look forward to seeing what this all means for Rocky Maivia. Fatu did struggle at times during his speech, which did hurt the segment. However, it certainly was better than anything we have ever seen out of him before.
Rating: 6/10
Overall Show: 6/10
Overall the show was pretty decent. Majority of the segments and matches were pretty consistent with no real highs or lows. I look forward to seeing how some of these B tier storylines progress overtime.
