As we continue down the fabled Road To WrestleMania, we have one more PPV stop before we get there. Las Vegas, Nevada is the site of No Way Out 2001, and the World Wrestling Federation has put together quite an interesting card. Going into the PPV, the only thing known about the main event was that Jeff Jarrett would be defending the WWF Title. That was because the opening bout on the PPV would be a Six-Pack Challenge, where the winner would challenge Jarrett later in the night. The match would feature four main event names (Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Kane, The Undertaker, and Triple H) as well as two notable names from the mid-card (Rikishi and Vampiro). When the dust settled, Hollywood Hulk Hogan would emerge victorious, but during his celebration, Jeff Jarrett would come up from behind with a guitar. This would bust Hogan open, and would seem to put the main event in doubt. However, when it came time for the main event, Hogan would appear (with a bandage wrapped around his head) for the match, and overcame the odds to capture the WWF Title for the sixth time. There wouldn't be any lying down nonsense here (ala Bash At The Beach 2000 from OTL). We'd get an actual match between the two. So Hollywood Hulk Hogan is going into WrestleMania X-Seven in Houston as your WWF Champion.
As for his WrestleMania opponent, 2001 Royal Rumble winner Steve Austin had an obstacle of his own to overcome before getting to Houston. He wanted to finally put an end to his feud with Psycho Sid once and for all. Of course, Psycho Sid was the one that ran him over with a car at Survivor Series 1999. Psycho Sid wanted to claim Austin's WrestleMania title shot for himself. Thus, it was decided that the two would settle their rivalry in a Three Stages Of Hell Match. Stage 1 would be a Street Fight, which would be won by Austin. Stage 2 would be a Steel Cage Match, which would be won by Sid. Finally, Stage 3 would be an Ambulance Match, which would ultimately be won by Austin.
With that, your main event for WrestleMania X-Seven is official. In a match that will be billed (by the WWF) as the Biggest Match in Sports Entertainment History, it'll be Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. Steve Austin for the WWF Title.
Before moving on, I need to make mention of an aspect of the build to Psycho Sid vs. Steve Austin. On the February 5th edition of RAW Is WAR, Psycho Sid challenged The Undertaker for the WWF Hardcore Title, and despite Steve Austin and Kane getting involved to help, the numbers from Planet Jarrett were too much for them, and Sid managed to win the WWF Hardcore Title. The following week on RAW Is WAR, while gloating about Sid's win the week prior, Vince Russo decided to call out Jim Ross. Ever since Russo had been appearing as an active television character in 2000, he had made his displeasure for Jim Ross very clear. So....in order to really put the screws to him, Russo decided to book Ross in a match....against Sid....for the WWF Hardcore Title. However, as soon as the match started, Steve Austin came out and attacked Sid. The match was mainly Austin battling Sid (who grabbed Ross once or twice....even nearly hitting the Powerbomb on him), but Austin took him out, subdued Russo, and then put Ross on top of Sid for the pin. Yes, you read that correctly.....Jim Ross won the WWF Hardcore Title. That reign wouldn't last long however, as just two days later on SmackDown, Russo would force Ross to defend the WWF Hardcore Title against him in a match where Planet Jarrett were lumberjacks. In what ended up being a short affair, Vince Russo won the WWF Hardcore Title from Jim Ross, and just when it looked as though Ross would get beaten down by Planet Jarrett, who would come to his rescue? Steve Austin and Shane McMahon.
Shane McMahon being part of the crew that made the save for Jim Ross would lead to Vince Russo vs. Shane McMahon for the WWF Hardcore Title at No Way Out. Now, of course, Vince Russo has been feuding with Vince McMahon over the last few months, but Shane had only recently entered the fight to help his father. Vince and Shane captured the WWF World Tag Team Titles at Royal Rumble 2001, but unfortunately, their reign didn't last very long. Vince Russo would force them to defend the titles under impossible circumstances on the February 7th SmackDown, as they would face Right To Censor members Bull Buchanan and The Goodfather....with Steven Richards as the Special Guest Referee, Val Venis as the Special Guest Ring Announcer, and Miss Molly (more on her in a few minutes) as the Special Guest Timekeeper. The odds were clearly stacked against The McMahons, and eventually, they came up short with Shane taking the pin after A TON of heel shenanigans. The match between Shane McMahon and Vince Russo would be....wild, to say the least. While Vince McMahon would help stave off interference attempts from Planet Jarrett, Russo's ace in the hole would end up being his bodyguard, Tank Abbott, who took out Shane, and allowed Russo to escape Las Vegas with the WWF Hardcore Title.
To continue a series of threads here (and since I'm on a roll in that regard), Right To Censor had a very tumultuous month between Royal Rumble and No Way Out. That aforementioned WWF World Tag Team Title win was actually a bounce back for the RTC, as they had lost the WWF World Six-Man Tag Team Titles to the team of Chyna and The APA on the February 5th RAW Is WAR. Their bout at No Way Out would be a rematch, and with RTC coming out on top, they would once again hold both the WWF World Tag Team Titles and the WWF World Six-Man Tag Team Titles. Meanwhile, Steven Richards was having the same feud (and match) with Jerry "The King" Lawler that he had in OTL. The only difference being that the roll of Ivory is being played by Molly Holly, who is known here as Miss Molly. I had mentioned previously that Dawn Marie had been the female member of the RTC, but right after the new year started, the RTC kicked her out of the group in favor of Miss Molly (I would imagine that, in storyline, they would discover some unsavory things about Dawn Marie that obviously did not fit with their belief system....or maybe they discovered that she was "relapsing" aka going back to her own ways). Regardless, just like in real life, we would see both Jerry Lawler and The Kat depart the WWF after this PPV for the same reasons that occurred in real life.
There are only two other matches I need to discuss. The first of those came about as part of the ongoing feud between Shawn Michaels and X-Pac. After winning the WWF Intercontinental Title back in a Ladder Match at Royal Rumble, Michaels would face X-Pac once again on the January 29th RAW Is WAR. This time, it would be in a Strap Match. The other members of X-Factor got involved at one point, but The Rock would come out fend them off. The following week, Michaels would ask The Rock to team with him against X-Factor at No Way Out so that he could finally put an end to that rivalry. The Rock said he would do it....on the condition that Michaels gives him and the millions (and millions) of fans around the world what they've wanted for years now....a one-on-one match between The Great One and The Heartbreak Kid. Michaels agreed, and then The Rock arrogantly declared that they didn't need to find a third man. Thus, the match was a Three-On-Two Handicap Match, and despite the obvious advantage that X-Factor had, that wasn't enough to get the job done. The two icons would win that encounter, and with X-Factor out of the way, another major match would be made official for Houston. The Rock would challenge Shawn Michaels for the WWF Intercontinental Title in a bonafide dream match at WrestleMania X-Seven.
Finally, Sunday Night Heat would feature a Six-Man Tag with Tiger Mask and Too Cool defeating Kid Kash and Kai En Tai. On paper, that just looked like a super fun match to book, so I put it together! Simple as that! I'll also throw on the theme that was actually used for No Way Out 2001. I believe it's a ripoff of "Machinehead" by Bush, but it's actually a good ripoff song. I also think it fits for this show (ignore the poster lol).
No other title changes to speak of, so that pretty much covers everything! Next up....it's the big one. It's WrestleMania X-Seven from the Reliant Astrodome in Houston, Texas! We've already got two colossal dream matches on the lineup. What else will fill in the card? Tune in next time to find out!
