Signing Hansen exclusively in 1983 is huge. Celebrating that by having him take the fall is NOT! ahah it helps solidifying Devastation Inc., tho. We still have a week to go until Star Wars, but the card is loaded. Funk vs. Flair will probably be the main event?

But I don't know, since the popularities can be different in your save... The six-man No DQ clash is also a good main event.

December 19th - 25th 1983
- We're getting close to the big Star Wars and no one got injured so far, fingers crossed... - No news from WCCW this week, as we're just waiting for the event on the 28th of course. Terry Funk had great words for Tito Santana after the latest house shows loop - News from the wrestling world: Tommy Rich keeps doing well in GCW, he just won the NWA National Heavyweight Title; Dory Funk Jr. is leaving MACW, so he will only have me and All Japan in his schedule for now; SECW seems to be about to close their doors too, but they also just rebranded themselves as a a "slobber knocker" company WCCW TV 25.12.1983 Dallas, TX Attendance: 14891 TV rating: 0.69 Show rating: 83
Ricky Morton (w/ Robert Gibson) def. Dennis Condrey (w/ Bobby Eaton) in 7:44 (71) On stage Bill Mercer interviews Tito Santana, but Jimmy Garvin arrives straight away and is tired of going around and hearing, including from his valet, that Santana is a better wrestler and better looking than him! Santana replies that at Star Wars they will face for the third time and the better man will win! (65) Tommy Rich & Mr. X (w/ Chris Adams) def. The Fantastics in 5:53. Arman Hussein in on the stage and threatens the babyfaces, but Adams chases him and Hussein leaves (59) On stage Bill Mercer interviews Devastation Inc. Akbar says that their goal for 1984 will be the Tag Titles to show they are the baddest team, but at Star Wars, Bundy will squash Stan Hansen in the cage! (82) Terry Taylor (w/ Sherri) def. Bill Irwin by DQ in 7:11 when Ted DiBiase trips Taylor, then running from him (66) In ring Bill Mercer interviews Ric Flair, who talks down to Texas and the fans, but is interrupted by Terry Funk, who provokes Flair saying that the world champion is from Texas! Flair cheap shots Funk and also Ted DiBiase arrives to help the Naitch, but Terry Taylor helps Flair clearing the ring! (87) David von Erich vs. Michael Hayes ends in a double DQ in 12:19 when von Erichs and Freebirds interfere (88) Postmatch von Erichs and Freebirds have a furious brawl and they can't be handled by security and referees! (87) Show notes
- The attendance was 1000 below average for some reason, but I got the highest TV rating so far - The last 20 minutes or so of the show were absolutely excellent: Flair and Funk had a great segment, the main event delivered and then the crowd went absolutely crazy for the big brawl, which I haven't had in a bit - Akbar also carried Bundy and Murdoch in their promo, while Morton and Condrey had an hot opener - Apparently Terry Taylor didn't seem to happy about winning by DQ only, but changed his mind when Bill Irwin intimidated him by looking at Taylor (never seen this before in TEW!). Irwin keeps being an asset, while Taylor backing off was surprising
WCCW Christmas Star Wars 28.12.1983 - WCCW Six Men Tag Titles No Disqualification Match: The Fabulous Freebirds (c) vs. the von Erichs - WCCW World Heavyweight Title: Terry Funk (c) vs. Ric Flair - WCCW World Tag Titles: Rock & Roll Express (c) vs. Midnight Express - WCCW Texas Heavyweight Title: Ted DiBiase (c) v. Terry Taylor - Steel Cage Match: King Kong Bundy vs. Stan Hansen - Tito Santana vs. Jimmy Garvin - Chris Adams, Tommy Rich & Mr. X vs. Great Kabuki, Magic Dragon & Checkmate

Pretty decent go-home show, with a final angle that definitely makes everything clear in the question "which match will main event Star Wars?".

WCCW CHRISTMAS STAR WARS 28.12.1983SAN ANTONIO, TX ATTENDANCE: 48328 TV RATING: 0.21 SHOW RATING: 85WCCW WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs. MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (c) These teams have been battling for months and months, but it's the first time they face since the Rock and Roll have won the tag titles. The crowd appreciates the fast paced action and of course Morton is always the one taking risks, but the heels isolate him for several minutes. Both Eaton and Gibson get an hot tag and the match becomes a 2v2 brawl, the referee try to stop this but he doesn't see that Condrey kicks Gibson low! Rocket launcher by Eaton! 1... 2... 3! MNX has stolen the titles! (79) (13:24)On stage Bill Mercer interviews Terry Funk, who can't wait to punch Ric Flair tonight so he can use all of his pay check at the dentist! (72)JIMMY GARVIN (w/ Sunshine) vs. TITO SANTANA The announcer remark how much these two have developed a personal and competitive rivalry, trying to see who can out wrestle the other, but Sunshine could be a catalyst as she seems in the middle of this. Garvin refuses to win by countout at one point and goes out of his way to beat Santana on the mat, when he could do more simple stuff to get advantage. Santana reacts and hits the flying forearm smash for the pinfall! (72) (12:19)Postmatch Garvin is furious and violently grabs Sunshine by her arm, but she refuses and goes to Santana instead! Garvin is furious, for losing both the match and his valet, while Santana hugs Sunshine who's finally free! (65)GREAT KABUKI, MAGIC DRAGON & CHECKMATE (w/ Arman Hussein) vs. CHRIS ADAMS, TOMMY RICH & MR. X These factions have been rivals for quite some time, this is Adams' return to the ring after Kabuki's mist almost blinded him and he still can't fully see. The heels are a more cohesive unit, as Rich and X always argue, while Adams is not at his best but does all he can. At one point, Kabuki tries to spit the mist on X as well, but Adams superkicks him! X falls on top of Kabuki and pins him, giving the victory to his team! (64) (8:14)On stage Stan Hansen makes his entrance, but he gets attacked by Dick Murdoch! Murdoch tries to soften Hansen up before the cage match, but Hansen blocks a punch and lariats Murdoch! Now Hansen rushes to the ring to face King Kong Bundy! (72)CAGE MATCH STAN HANSEN vs. KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Skandor Akbar) There is no break or limit in here, these two big men go at it with a huge slugfest and the announcers say that Hansen is even angrier after Bundy and Murdoch tried to set him up before the match. After a few minutes, Bundy starts bleeding but he still seems in control after a lethal splash. Bundy wants to hit another splash from the top rope, but he misses and Hansen lariats him! Bundy falls into the ropes and Hansen lariats him again! Hansen can't walk properly, but escapes the cage to win! (86) (10:26)Backstage Bill Mercer interviews Ric Flair, who complains about the locker room he was given and says that he should be treated with more respect. Mercer asks Flair if he has a final message for Terry Funk and Flair promises to take the title home! (84)NWA TEXAS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TED DIBIASE (c) (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. TERRY TAYLOR (w/ Sherri) The announcers remind us that DiBiase will lose his title if he gets disqualified this time and DiBiase is really nervous because of this; he tries to get counted out to still retain in a cheap way, but Taylor grabs him and takes him back to the ring on time. Taylor seems able to capitalize on DiBiase's limits, but Heenan helps the champion by putting his feet to the ropes after a DDT. Taylor watches Sherri jump on Heenan and runs into the powerslam! 1... 2... 3! DiBiase retains again! (71) (9:56)The Fabulous Freebirds arrive to the ring and say that for one year the company has been trying to run them out of Texas, that's the only way their von Erichs darlings can be the top group in WCCW! They're still here and not going anywere! The von Erichs rush to the ring and the match can start! (81)WCCW WORLD SIX MEN TAG TITLES NO DISQUALIFICATION MATCH THE FABULOUS FREEBIRDS (c) vs. THE VON ERICHS It's a huge brawl and the referee has been instructed just to count the pinfall or witness the submission, anything goes tonight! The three pairings are formed again: Kerry vs. Gordy; Kevin vs. Hayes; David vs. Roberts. Both Hayes and David start bleeding after a few minutes, but things get dramatic when Kerry is sent face first on the barriers and he lays down, with the announcers speculating that this might have given him a concussion and worsened his health after his injury due to a chair shot! It's 3 vs. 2 for several minutes and Kevin defends David with kicks, but then Kerry finally comes back with a chair and hits all the heels! Kerry applies the claw on Roberts and he gives up!!! The von Erichs are the new champions!!! (91) (15:56)Postmatch the brothers celebrate with the crowd, while Hayes is absolutely furious and pushes Roberts! Gordy asks him to calm down, but Hayes leaves the ring by himself! (87)WCCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TERRY FUNK (c) vs. RIC FLAIR The announcers remind us all the talk and fight between these two all year, they only faced twice in a tag match, but Funk made his wish to face Flair after winning Ultimate Jeopardy and Flair wants to get the World Title from him. As expected, Funk wants a physical match while Flair stalls a bit and tries to get under his skin to then capitalize on Funk's mistakes. Flair works on Funk's leg after a few minutes, which turns the match around but doesn't stop Funk from hitting Flair hard with punches during his comeback! Flair struggles, but finally gets the figure four on! Funk refuses to tap out and Flair uses the ropes as a leverage, so the referee tries to stop him... and he doesn't see that Ted DiBiase hits the ring with his black glove and punches Funk right in the face!!! Funk is knocked out and the figure four is still on, the referee counts the shoulders on the mat... 1... 2... 3!!! Ric Flair is the new WCCW World Heavyweight Champion!!!??? (85) (17:42)Postmatch Flair celebrates with the gold and is annoyingly talks about all the money he's going to make, while Funk realizes what happened and is livid!!! (83)
Show notes
- So, what can I say? I am happy with this season finale. Every match in here had at least a 3 months program behind them, some 6, some a full year. I'm a bit disappointed about not breaking my attendance record, but 48000 was still quite good and the Triangle Titles match was my MOTY
- Flair, David and Gordy were praised for their performances. I also made a little speech before the show and the locker room seemed really motivated by it
- I usually analyse things randomly, but let's go match by match here...
- MNX vs. R&R was a strong opener and the crowd loved it, even though Condrey was a bit lost out there at times
- Garvin gets some heat back and can use this to reinvent himself, he had 2 intense feuds this year (Taylor and Santana) and Sunshine was featured in both, time to move on and progress
- Team Adams vs. Team Kabuki: easily the weakest one, but it went fine and the heels are in the Adias/Irwin category of reliable, consistent guys that need a break every now and then
- Hansen vs. Bundy was kept short because less is more sometimes, but it exceeded my expectations, they got great chemistry and it showed. The agent reported not enough selling, without further details, but the rating was still quite high
- Taylor is getting flat, he can be a pain backstage but his performances are not too bad and today he did okay as well
- Von Erichs vs. Freebirds was just great, so great. It's not over and it would be a shame if it was
- Props to Flair and Funk, not just for the match but for being able to follow the six men and also keep the crowd's interest. Is my audience more entertained by brawls rather than classic matches, or is that the other storyline is too hot? Maybe a bit of both. I had the title change planned all along and it had to main event the show despite not being the hottest angle, so I used the improptu Freebirds promo as a way to start their match earlier than scheduled
Well, this was a long post Next week's one will feature 1) 1983 in review, with a quick line on all the active promotions and what they did in 1983 2) 1983 Awards 3) Star Wars fallout and more news 4) My first TV show for 1984

WOW! I didn't expect Flair to win the belt... and while the six-man title clash was the best match of the card (and according to TEW should've been the main event), Funk vs. Flair was great too.
Overall, an amazing show. Probably your best. 1984 has a lot to offer and my first question going into the new year is: "will the Freebirds be the same?"

January 1st 1984
Happy new year everyone! This is a special post, as we are reviewing 1983!
1983 Awards Wrestler of the Year: Dusty Rhodes (CWF and MSW) Promotion of the Year: New Japan Pro Wrestling Tag Team of the Year: Riki Choshu & Tatsumi Fujinami (NJPW) Match of the Year: Stan Hansen & Hulk Hogan vs. Antonio Inoki & Tiger Mask (NJPW) Show of the Year: Aura of the Dragon (NJPW) Young Wrestler of the Year: Terry Gordy (WCCW) Manager of the Year: Bobby Heenan (AWA and WCCW)
Top 500 1. Dusty Rodes 2. Antonio Inoki 3. Stan Hansen 4. Riki Choshu 5. Tatsumi Fujinami 6. Tiger Mask 7. Hulk Hogan 8. Terry Gordy 9. Terry Funk 10. David Von Erich Other WCCW wrestlers: 11. Michael Hayes; 12. Kevin von Erich; 14. Buddy Roberts; 18 Kerry von Erich
Wrestling in 1983 - USA: SWCW closed down, but all other companies are still active. 5 companies are now "medium" size: CWF, CWA, GCW, WCCW and WWF. Only the last two, however, are making serious money. MACW and MSW are doing okay, while AWA had a very disappointing year - Japan: both All Japan and New Japan had a good year and are making money, but are still too small and lost quite a few ganjins - Canada: not a good year, most companies need financial help, especially CSW - Mexico: EMLL is now a "medium" company despite not having a lot of money, while UWA makes decent cash in their territory but still needs to progress - Europe: little business over there and nothing outstanding to report

Not a bad year for you, specially considering the only real competition you have in terms of $ is WWF. I hope that you can get some more awards by 1984.
