- Life is imitating art, as Tito Santana suffered a minor chest injury and will be out for a week or so. On screen, he is selling an arm injury to enhance his feud with Magnum TA

- Barry Windham has been named the best overall worker around in a dirt sheet newsletter. A nice nod!

- New Japan finally sent me somebody on excursion! Youngster Shinichi Nakano will work with CState for the next 2 years and I might use him on the main roster as an enhancement talent if he does well

- In CWF, Dusty Rhodes won the NWA Florida Heavyweight Title against Manny Fernandez, before 94 lucky fans; in CState, apparently Dynamite Kid has dropped Davey Boy Smith and is tagging with Al Perez as the Morning Express?!

WCCW TEXAS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

TED DIBIASE (c) (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs BRIAN ADIAS

It was supposed to be DiBiase vs JYD, but the announcers replay DiBiase punching JYD last week and say that Adias stepped up to replace JYD, who’s not cleared to compete. JR is disgusted by DiBiase’s actions. The champion seems way too confident and makes fun of Adias throughout the match, but Adias shows the usual fire and proves that he can be a threat. Eventually, DiBiase hits the piledriver thanks to Heenan and pins Adias to retain! (74) (7:42)

Postmatch MNX make their way down the ring and they plan on attacking Adias again, but the injured Tito Santana and Rock & Roll Express arrive to prevent it! Heenan calls R&R out and they jump in the ring to start their match against MNX straight away! (70)

WCCW WORLD TAG TITLES

ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS (c) vs MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (w/ Bobby Heenan and Ted DiBiase)

This is another chapter of the long saga and Cornette says that it would be humiliating for the R&R to lose the titles already, after chasing them for months. The heels are extra aggressive and want their revenge, plus DiBiase stays at ringside and is an additional threat. Morton sells for minutes, then hot tags Gibson and the match gets really intense! At the end, Eaton rolls up Gibson, but Morton dropkicks Eaton and so Gibson counters the roll up to retain! (81) (11:13)

Postmatch DiBiase jumps in the ring and helps MNX, so they quickly beat down R&R! Fritz von Erich makes his way down and is sick of it, he ejects The Horsemen from the building and says that, if they like being a trio, maybe next week they can step up and face the von Erichs for the Six Men Tag Titles! (78)

AL MADRIL vs THE GREAT KABUKI

Kabuki comes back unannounced, after losing a hair match to Mr. X a few months ago, even though he has some hair now. Kabuki seems even more serious and Cornette wonders how will he act up without Arman Hussein by his side. JR reminds us about the feud Kabuki and Madril had last year for the TV Title, but Kabuki gets the upper hand straight away and wins the match with a big boot! (66) (5:13)

On stage Bill Mercer interviews the von Erichs, who are enjoying a rare night off and are getting ready to face MNX & DiBiase next week. David also says that he owes Michael Hayes something, so he can’t wait to get him bloody at Star Wars! Skandor Akbar interrupts them and says that he saw Kerry and Kevin insulting his boys last week and they are not happy, so he wants them in a tag match at Star Wars! Kerry accepts, but says that Bundy is in the Bullrope Match already, so he can’t tag with Dick Murdoch. Akbar laughs and says that he has somebody ready to be on his side! (85)

MR. X (w/ Chris Adams) vs AL PEREZ

Gary Hart is on commentary and JR is upset because Gino Hernandez, after spending months trying to unmask, won’t take the mask off now! Hart says he’s just protecting his face, because Tully Blanchard is always about and now they are also facing off at Star Wars! In the ring, X has an easy match against Perez and wins with an elbowsmash from the top rope! (65) (4:55)

In the parking lot Bill Mercer interviews Buddy Roberts, who says Dutch Manell invited him and he’s been here all day, but still nothing… but Mantell suddenly comes out of a car and attacks Roberts! They start beating each other up, but security arrives to separate them and Mantell is taken away in a car to stop the fight! (72)

BILL IRWIN vs BARRY WINDHAM

Magnum TA and Sherri watch the match from the stage and JR keeps wondering why is Magnum obsessed with Windham, who is just trying to build a career for himself in WCCW. Magnum shows no emotion and just watches the action in the ring. Irwin uses a beer bottle to get some heat with the fans, but at the end Windham gets the upper hand and pins him with a fisherman suplex! (74) (6:31)

Taped Michael Hayes interview from his living room. Bill Mercer asks what his motivation is going into Star Wars and Hayes says that David von Erich destroyed the Freebirds, so the least he can do is destroying his career! It’s only 5 months left, though, they will come back while David will soon retire for good! Hayes says that the best man between Gordy and Garvin will win at Star Wars, he can’t take them both at the time, but will watch the match with a lot of interest! (80)

STAN HANSEN & TERRY FUNK vs TERRY GORDY & JIMMY GARVIN

JR says that it’s strange to see Gordy and Garvin together without Hayes, but even stranger knowing that they will face off in 10 days! The heels work together well, but you can see some tension building up, while Funk and Hansen are always on the same page. At one point, Garvin is upset about Hansen punching him and leaves the ring. Gordy yells at him to come back, but he gets distracted and Terry hits him with a piledriver to win the match! Garvin watches the pin and it’s too late for him to make the save! (84) (12:26)

Postmatch Funk and Hansen celebrate… but King Kong Bundy and Ric Flair run in with two bullropes! Flair and Bundy beat the hell out of Funk and Hansen, who are tired and surprised about the attack! Funk is now bleeding, while Bundy and Flair celebrate and hold the World Title together! (82)

Show notes

- The main event worked really well, it was a first time ever and I use to enhance a few storylines. After weeks of Flair and Bundy saying a lot of words, this time they only cared about action

- This was a rare case of two titles being defended back to back on TV, with a segment in the middle as well. A bit of an experiment, but it gave me around 20/25 minutes of good TV

- Kabuki and Madril didn't really click, while they used to do okay together last year

- It's nice to note that von Erichs, Hayes, Flair, Santana, Windham, Dory, etc. all took a week off and the in ring action was still worth watching

Technical question: What's the typical time you run for your angles between matches? Interviews, beatdowns, celebrations, etc., etc.

How long do you have King Kong Bundy for? He seems like he could be an asset.

I love Bullrope Matches, so I'm pumped for the outcome of the next Star Wars main event (?) Flair and Bundy is actually a pairing I can imagine working, and I liked the final moments of the show.

About the card for Star Wars: it's shaping up nicely, yet again. I doubt Murdoch's partner will be Dusty, but... I may be miserably wrong.

I would say anything between 2 and 5 minutes. I can add the length of the segments too from now on, it probably gives a better idea about the flow of the whole show

Freelancer, he won't sign an exclusive deal but is not currently working with anyone else (and even if he was, my dates would be his priority). I know that PPA contracts expire too, how long of a notice do I get usually? 28 days?

- Dick Murdoch and Robert Gibson had an argument backstage, it didn't go anywhere but both Tully Blanchard and Kevin von Erich sided with Murdoch and now they don't get along with Gibson anymore. Ironically, Murdoch and Gibson were set to face each other in a tag match at the next TV show and they still will

- Blanchard also got in little trouble for not listening to during a talent meeting. Veteran Dory Funk Jr has publicly criticized Blanchard and he apologised for his actions

- News from the wrestling world: my boy Tommy Rich lost the National Heavyweight Title against Larry Zbyszko in GCW; Harley Race is the new NWA US Champion after defeating Roddy Piper in MACW; but the shocker of the week is SD Jones winning the WWF IC Title against Buddy Rose

WCCW All-Star Wrestling 25.08.1984

BARRY WINDHAM, BRIAN ADIAS & AL MADRIL (w/ Tito Santana and Sunshine) vs EAST COAST REDNECKS (w/ Sherri)

Here Madril subs for Santana, who is still injured even though Magnum TA keeps provoking him and Santana is tempted to fight him! Magnum, however, always stays away from Windham and lets Taylor and Irwin in the ring every time Windham gets in the ring. Windham again dares Magnum to come in, but he refuses and Windham finishes Taylor with a fisherman suplex! (79) (7:35 + 2)

Postmatch Bill Mercer interviews Tito Santana and Barry Windham. Windham says that Magnum TA actually brought him to WCCW and they go back a long way, but that is personal and business is business. Windham says that, since Santana is still KO, a match between him and Magnum has been signed for Star Wars! Santana applauds and shakes hands with Windham (74) (2 mins)

THE FANTASTICS vs TERRY GORDY & JIMMY GARVIN

JR reminds us that Gordy and Garvin will fight at Star Wars, but here they are facing off a much-experienced team, the Fantastics, who are on a good run recently. Jim Cornette speculates on Michael Hayes' words, as he intended that he will still recruit one of them. Gordy powerbombs Fulton and Garvin pats him on the back hard, but Gordy tells him not to touch him! The referee pokes Gordy, as he's the illegal man, and Gordy slaps the referee thinking it's Garvin, so it's a DQ! (77) (7:00 + 2)

Postmatch Gordy is upset about the misunderstanding, while Garvin is offended and dares Garvin to hit him with a slap like he intended to! Gordy decides to back off, while Garvin says that the best match will win at Star Wars! (80) (3 mins)

DUTCH MANTELL vs MIKE JOHNSON

Fritz is on commentary and says that, if Mantell and Buddy Roberts want to fight in a parking lot, good luck to them because they will have a Parking Lot Brawl at Star Wars now! Johnson again shows some progress and has a 2.5 count after a roll up, but Mantell hits the tennessee chainsaw and wins (61) (4:38 + 2)

Taped promo from Stan Hansen and The Funks from the double cross ranch. Hansen holds a bullrope in a hand and the World Title in the other, saying that both Ric Flair and King Kong Bundy are more than welcome to try to take both from him! Dory says that, if Ted DiBiase tries to interfere, he will taste his revenge. Terry warns the Horsemen and Devastation Inc., saying that nobody is more dangerous than rugged experienced piss** off Texans! (86) (4 mins)

NON-TITLE MATCH

ROCK & ROLL EXPRESS vs DEVASTATION INC. (w/ Skandor Akbar)

A new challenge for the new champions, as Bundy and Murdoch show all of their power and hold nothing back even if we are a few days from PPV. Bundy and Murdoch beat down Morton and make him bleed, but then finally Gibson gets the hot tag! Bobby Heenan shows up at ringside and this distracts Morton, while Bundy hits a splash on Gibson and pins him! Dev. Inc has defeated the champions! (82) (8:24 + 2)

Postmatch Bill Mercer interviews Akbar and wants to know who's Murdoch's mystery partner at Star Wars against the von Erichs. Akbar refuses to tell Mercer and says that even his boys are not 100% happy, but his decision will pay off! Mercer also asks about Funk and Hansen's words, but Bundy yells that he's the biggest man in WCCW and will soon be the champion! (76) (3 mins)

CHRIS ADAMS (w/ Mr. X and Gary Hart) vs TULLY BLANCHARD

JR says that due Duo and Hart are the most annoying act in WCCW, so obnoxious and arrogant, including Gino not taking his mask off. Blanchard fights Adams and does quite well, but he surely wants Gino and also leaves the ring to beat him up at ringside! X jumps back in the ring and attacks Blanchard alongside Adams, causing the DQ! (70) (7:59 + 2)

On stage Bill Mercer interviews the von Erichs about their main event title defence, but it's only Kerry and Kevin. All of a sudden, we see Michael Hayes and David von Erich brawl a few feet away! Hayes grabs a table and throws him on David's head, then runs away because the brothers are chasing him! We see Hayes run and getting into a car that is already on, so his mysterious driver quickly runs away! (87) (5 mins)

WCCW SIX MEN TAG TITLES

THE VON ERICHS (c) vs TED DIBIASE & MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (w/ Bobby Heenan)

The match starts with an injured David, who stays on the apron without participating, as that fight didn't help due to the concussion he received after the cage bump. JR is disgusted by Hayes, while Cornette wonders where Ric Flair is. David is actually checked by a doctor, while Kerry gets isolated in the Horsemen's corner and the heels work on his ribs repeatedly. Kevin gets the hot tag, right when Ric Flair shows up! Flair distracts the referee and passes the Texas Title to DiBiase! DiBiase is ready to hit Kevin, but David jumps up and hits DiBiase with a high knee, before collapsing to the floor as well! Kevin pins DiBiase! 1... 2... 3! The von Erichs retain! (87) (12:41 + 3)

Postmatch the von Erichs celebrate and dare to fight Flair, who has one of his tantrums but then walks away and tells the Horsemen to follow him! However, on the stage, Fritz stops them and says that MNX & DiBiase won't have the night off at Star Wars because they will face R&R Express and the returning JYD! DiBiase is upset and demands respect for the Texas champion! (85) (4 mins)

Show notes

- I was surprised by the TV rating and attendance results, my best two yet. This show was a bit different in terms of structure, the Texans were at home, Flair did just a little, Hayes was seen briefly etc. and I focused on some midcard feuds that needed a boost. I was actually expecting a mid-level show in terms of quality and success, but it went really well

- So, we finally saw Horsemen vs. von Erichs for the first time and it ruled! Condrey was the weak link, but he still performed really well

- The same can be said for the opener, as Taylor was off (shockingly) but it all went really well

- Despite the new Murdoch/Gibson heat, their match was good as well and it's good to see that they can be professional when it comes to work

- Hayes looked like a star in his segment and enjoyed the creative freedom
