Florentine Grand Prix, Florence, Italy (Week 6: 1964) Weather: Rain A rainy day at Florence, where Dan Halley has won both editions of this race so far. Lap 2: Attila used the wrong tires and skids out early. Lap 5: Gustafson hydroplanes into Makoto, who wrecks Keikel. Tough break for all 3. Lap 8: An bad turn ends the race for M. Hancock. Lap 10: Duquese slides into a wall and must end his day. Lap 11: Bad day as Dino Moore is once again plagued with mechanical issues. Lap 13: Tim Donst's front wing is too damaged to repair. Lap 16: B. Da Silva becomes yet another rain victim.

Kasektir earns his first points, proving to be already better than Savic. Halley announces he will be retiring and taking a position as a race manager for GM after the season. Driver's Championship:

Austrian Grand Prix, Vienna, Austria (Week 7: 1964) Weather: Rain Back to back rainy races, this time on the home track of Motorsport Vienna. Will that be enough for the Austrians? Keikel won the last running in Austria, and may have something to say about that. Lap 3: A race that claimed 9 cars at last running claims one here, as Dino Moore continues his frustrating battle with his car. Lap 6: Kasektir springs an oil leak, we go to yellow flag as he ends his race. Lap 7: Oh, no, Da Silva slides on the spilled oil and hits the wall! Lap 8: Donst collides with Fehrvar on an attempted pass. 5 cars out already! Lap 9: Daan loses something crucial in his engine. His car cannot run but the home fans serenade him all the same. Lap 10: Japanese driver Yuji Makoto blows a tire in this rainy massacre. Lap 12: Those words prove far too prophetic, as the same corner that ended 2 races on lap 8 claims more! Kujiro and Stokely collide, and Keikel can't brake fast enough. All 3 are miraculously okay. Only 8 cars left. Lap 14: Bart Hancock narrowly escapes serious injury when his car overshoots a turn and nearly hits the remains of another, but a skilled slide keeps him alive, literally. His brother is quite shaken up, by the sounds of the radio calls. Lap 18: This race loves to take people out, my goodness. Gustafson misses out on easy points, crashing just before 90%. Lap 19: Morell pushes his damaged car across the line for 90%, then retires. He didn't want to risk injury or car damage.

*Did not finish but completed 90% of the race. That was NUTS. Lap after lap, the crashes piled in. Vienna has already been taken off the calendar for 1965 and 1966, and will need to make massive improvements in order to return. Bart Hancock was nearly killed, and no less than 13 cars crashed today. Insane. Vicci snags a nice win though, and Boros snags his second podium of the year. Despite feeling his age, Halley kept his car alive, and would like to have a nice run in his final season. Driver's Championship:

Hungarian Grand Prix, Budapest, Hungary (Week 8: 1964) Weather: Sunny From Motorsport Vienna to MNV home races, let's see if the Hungarians can make a better go of it than the Austrians did. We ended the inaugural season here with an insane GM 1-2 that stole the Constructor's championship for them, and with few retirements. Lap 1: Disaster strikes, as one car fails to release and another plows right into the back of it at high speeds, sending debris everywhere. Red flag, and Duquese and Makoto are both rushed to the hospital in serious condition. A hushed race restarts, with 2 less cars. Lap 2: Da Silva retires from the race to be with his friend Duquese, and Halley can't get his car going again. Lap 3: Donst spins out and loses his front wing. Lap 5: A horrible race, Gustafson loses it. Lap 6: What a disaster! Kujiro retires after hearing that Makoto isn't doing well. Daan loses all traction on the slick pavement. Lap 14: After a quiet few laps, Vicci must retire from standard engine trouble. We receive word from the hospital that Makoto is badly injured but stable.

*Did not finish but completed 90% of the race. A horror crash on Lap 1 sapped a lot of the energy of this race out. Mac Duquese remains fighting for his life at a local hospital. A sobering reminder that this is a very dangerous activity. MNV looked good in their home track. Making up ground on Audi. Stokely looked like his old self again. Driver's Championship:

Between the lack of track preparedness in Vienna and the major injuries in Budapest, it's been a pretty bad few weeks for F1 hasn't it. Hopefully Belgrade and Istanbul will be safer!

Breaking: Duquese passes away. French Formula 1 driver Mac Duquese has been declared dead after a crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Doctors say he likely died instantly after his car wouldn't start and he was hit by an Isuzu car. Tributes have been coming in all day. "I can't believe he's gone." said Calleras Galas teammate Bruno Da Silva. "Just before the race we were joking and laughing... we all know the risks, but this hurts. He was my best friend."
Galas confirmed that reserve driver and Spaniard Carlos Garcia will be driving the car for the final 2 races of the season, which have been pushed back to review safety standards.

Dang, that is horrendous. I know it would be realistic for the time but I didn’t think you would put stuff like that into this. Da Silva can’t catch a break on or off the track I guess.

I actually have a system to simulate serious injuries and fatalities. Every race, I roll 1d20. Anyone who crashes on that lap is in danger of serious injury. I then roll again, and a lower roll indicates a more severe injury. Unfortunate, but I wanted a fairly accurate simulation, and this stuff really did happen.

Yugoslav Grand Prix, Belgrade, Yugoslavia (Week 9: 1964) Weather: Sunny After the disaster at Budapest that cost a driver his life, safety standards have been very strictly enforced at this race. We move across Yugoslavia for this year's GP, to Belgrade. Garcia replaces Duquese, and Isuzu signs Savic for 2 races, under the logic that they didn't have a standard reserve driver, and prize money from the constructor's championship is key. Garcia and Da Silva come out waving French flags to honor Duquese. Lap 1: Kujiro can't get his car started today. All hope for Isuzu rests with Savic. Lap 2: M. Hancock and Donst collide in an unfortunate manner. Lap 3: Fehrvar catches fire but is fine. Lap 4: Garcia overshoots a turn and ends up in the barrier. Lap 5: Vicci has more engine trouble and has to pull out. Lap 7: Collision! Kasektir and Moore collide on a bad pass and both are done for. Lap 9: Halley and Da Silva have separate mechanical issues and retire. Lap 10: Morell overheats. Lap 12: What a crash, the whole back pack is taken out. Savic, Keikel, and Daan are done for. Lap 14: And then there were 3. Attila blows a seal.

With some of the stuff you've made work in your sim, I kind of wish I'd put a bit more thought into how races and scoring worked for mine.
