WWE SUMMERSLAM LIVE! from Toronto, Canada
Saturday -- Week 4 -- August 2024
- The SummerSlam opening video blends the past and the present as some of the greatest moments in SummerSlam history are compared to more modern equivalents. Then we get some hype for the biggest matches on tonight's show. After the video we get a live shot of the arena as pyro goes off and the announcers welcome everyone to the show. | 74
- On the SummerSlam Kickoff show the announcers mentioned that Edge has requested that his match be the opening match on the show as he feels he will be unable to resist the urge to get his hands on LA Knight and so that's our opening match. | 70
EDGE |VS| LA KNIGHT
This is a super hot opener. Edge comes out first, dressed in all-white. He comes out and the crowd goes crazy for their hometown hero. He poses on the stage and then poses again in the ring. Tons of pyro shoots off from all around the building. The announcers put over that this might be the last time he performs in his hometown and they talk about how big the match is for Edge's opponent, LA Knight. Knight is out next. The boos from the crowd are almost deafening as Knight comes out onto the stage. He climbs in the ring and poses but Edge attacks him before he can get his vest off. The bell rings and Edge is a man possessed to start. He whips Knight into the corner and slams LA's head into the top turnbuckle and then whips him into another turnbuckle and slams his head into the top buckle again. Edge does it two more times for an around-the-world turnbuckle smash. Knight is dazed and Edge gets a double leg takedown and throws both rights and lefts on LA Knight as Knight tries to cover up. The referee pulls Edge off and the crowd boos. Edge gets up and Knight rolls outside. Edge hits a dive to Knight and then punches him again on the arena floor. Edge rolls LA back into the ring to beat the 10 count. Edge gets in the ring and sets up for a spear as the crowd starts to get hyped up. Knight gets to his feet and staggers around. Edge goes for a spear but Knight moves. Edge hits his shoulder on the steel post. Knight takes over and begins kicking Edge in the ribs, back, and shoulder. Knight is talking trash to Edge the entire time. Knight throws Edge to the outside and follows him out. Knight beats Edge around the outside of the ring. Knight whips Edge into the steel steps and Edge hits shoulder-first. Knight places Edge's injured arm on the steps and drops his knee onto it. Knight climbs up onto the apron and leaps off for a double axe handle but Edge moves and Knight hits the barricade. Edge kicks Knight in the ribs but stops his attack to shake the feeling back into his left arm. Edge turns back to Knight and Knight thumbs him in the eye and then slams Edge's head into the ring apron. Knight rolls Edge back into the ring. Knight goes to climb back in but as he gets one leg into the ring, Edge grabs the middle rope and viciously lifts it up into Knight's groin. Knight sells the move and falls to his knees. Edge waits for Knight to get up and hits the spear. Edge covers Knight but LA kicks out at two! Edge picks Knight up and hits the Impaler ddt. Edge goes to cover Knight but he looks down at Knight with disgust. He spits on him and then leaves the ring. Edge grabs two chairs and tries to carry them into the ring but the referee attempts to stop him. LA Knight gets up and walks over to Edge and Edge throws his shoulder into Knight's midsection. Edge throws the chairs down and climbs in the ring. Knight kicks Edge and then whips him across the ring. Knight hits a clothesline on Edge but Edge pops up and no sells it. Knight has his back turned and when he turns around and he sees Edge standing there he begins to back off. Edge backs Knight into the ropes. Edge tells Knight to bring it. Knight fires back with a right hand but Edge no sells it. Knight hits another. Edge begins to "Hulk up" but Knight goes for a kick to the groin. Edge catches his leg and pulls him in and hits the Downward Spiral! The crowd pops huge as Edge covers Knight but Knight's leg is out of the ring so the referee can't count. Knight bails from the ring and Edge and Beth hug in the ring and play to the crowd as Edge gets a huge ovation from his hometown crowd. | 88
KNOCKOUT OR SUBMISSION ONLY: BROCK LESNAR |VS| DANIEL CORMIER
This was weird. It was short and it didn't seem like it should have been any good but it ended up working. They basically just got in the ring and started throwing hands. Neither guy bothered to work their punches and neither man bothered to cover up. But they weren't trying to knock each other out either. Cormier took Lesnar down and tried to work an arm submission but Lesnar fought out of it. They brawled around a bit more and Cormier got a double leg and charged the corner, slamming Lesnar into the turnbuckles. Cormier threw some body punches but Lesnar hit a headbutt and a clothesline to underscore that this was still a wrestling match and not an MMA fight. Lesnar kicked Cormier in the head and then picked him up for an F-5 but Cormier got an armbar and spun around. Lesnar dove for the ropes and, in a cool spot, dangled Cormier upside down over the top rope toward the floor. Cormier kept the hold locked in and Lesnar screamed in pain but refused to tap. Eventually he swung Cormier around and Cormier slammed into the steel ring post. This not only broke the armbar but sent Cormier collapsing to the arena floor. The referee went out of the ring to check on Cormier and called the fight. Cormier came to and tried to get back in the ring but he was bleeding profusely and had to be held back as the referee stopped the fight and awarded it to Brock.
WINNER by KO/Referee Stoppage: Brock Lesnar (5:45) | 70
BACKSTAGE WITH EDGE
Cathy Kelley is backstage with Edge and Beth Phoenix. She asks Edge about the outcome of his match and he says that he did not come here tonight with the idea that he could lose. He's not happy about the loss but he loved the outpouring of love he got after the match. Cathy asks if he plans to wrestle again. Edge says his run isn't over. He just knows that it's probably going to be a year or so before WWE returns to this city and he's not sure he'll still be around by then. But he has a few more bucket list items left to check off. As he's talking Brock Lesnar walks past and bumps Edge. Edge gets a "what the ****?" look on his face and he shoves Brock in the shoulder. Brock turns around and smiles and asks Edge if he just saw him dismantle Daniel Cormier. Edge says he didn't. Brock tells Edge to watch himself or else he'll do even worse to Edge. Edge tells Brock that he's never backed down before and he doesn't plan on doing it now. Brock tells Edge that he knows where to find him if he wants to get his ass handed to him. Lesnar stomps off and Edge just stands there and stares in the direction he walked in. | 88
